View Full Version : ••••• Please "CHECK IN" if; Mac G5 + 9.5 = CRASHES ••••••
howzit 12-12-2005, 05:49 AM I read several threads as of late, in regards to G5s, Cinema 9.5 and crashes. It seems that as owners are starting to get their Quads the posts of crashes are trickling in.
I just wanted to see if these are isolated incidences or whether there is a mis-linkage between version 9.5 and G5s.
I disregarded them (people's posts) as perhaps bad ram, as I had not "worked" 9.5 hard.
But I worked non-stop this week-end, and its reached a point where Cinema is in-operable.
I did a few 5 sec animation 7 hour renders, NO crashes. In fact no crashes at all with rendering.
However, adjusting any parameter is causing crashes. Either light strength, reflection strength in a shader, alpha channels, anything..... any slider I adjust, Cinema just disapears, instantly, no spinning or stuck curser. Then the "app unexpectadly quit" warning.
ALL work has come to a FULL STOP.... I just cannot run it at all.
Before I write or call for support I just wanted to see if there are any others having problems with 9.5, Macs, G5s.
This would help me in trouble shooting whats going on thanks. Maybe just go back to 9.1 for the time being if there is a known bug, as I simply cannot work for now.....

Thou 9.521 is much better then the original 9.5, I do get occational crashes.
The latest I discovered I found a couple a days ago and is related to materials.
What I found so far is if SniperPro is active and I apply a Turbulence Noice shader to an object and then try to adjust the lo cut, Cinema dives.
There is an issue adding a new Viewport to the left of a floating AM (Mac only, confirmed).
Cinema still occationaly crashes on shut down. I thought it was because QT had been activated by a Preview render, but it looks as if that is not the sole reason.
In both 9.5 versions, the AM are not always updated correctly. When switching between materials, I now and then have to toggle the "Lock" button to activate the correct Material.
The issue that you have that Cinema crashes on -any- material edit must be figured out.
Please try to make a setup that do crash repeatedly and let me/others try.
Cheers
Lennart
Hi all,
anyone who experiences crashes with 9.521 on a Mac please mail me the crashlog and a description on the circumstances to b_marl (at) maxon (dot) net
Thanks

Hey Lennart,
How are you doing man! Cool, enjoying Steadycam daily...
Anyway, YES! I get the exact crash you mentioned, with sniper pro ALSO.
The other crash is when I double click a material to get its window to come up, Cinema goes (This is WITH or WITHOUT sniper pro).
The last is the one I mentioned with adjusting parameters (WITH AND WITHOUT sniper pro).
So this is good, (imagine the irony) I guess Paul should know about that bug then for sniper pro (if its sniper with the code error, not sure if the current version is approved for use with 9.5). But the 2 material crash happens with or without sniper.
ok cool man thanks, lets see if we can get more folks to join in here, so we can fix this...
Ooops, just saw the post above after i submited this. Thanks man, Ill be sending you a log.
Before I write or call for support I just wanted to see if there are any others having problems with 9.5, Macs, G5s.
.
No problem here on Dual 2 GHz G5 and (single) G4. Unfortunately no Quad here...
Best regards,
wbj

I get the crash on a shutdown occasionally, but I recently re-installed and still get it. It was confirmed to me when even the demo crashed on shutdown. Most odd. I also had some crashes with hair, but I think it was because I hit a button that caused about 500 million hairs to be calculated which I guess wouldn't help.
So to summarise 9.5.2 seems more crashy than normal on my Dual G5.

Hi,
Chris: we were able to trace your crash to Jenna via the Crashlog. Please remove Jenna and all other plugins and try again.
Cheers

It kept me busy for a week to find out what the reason was. My Quad was crashing all the time especially with rendering. It was bad Ram memory.
Try to remove all extra ram and only leave the original ram (512mb)...
For me no more crashes...
Good luck!

i will remove Jenna, thank you very much for the fast feed-back.
I was not using Jenna though, wonder why it would cause crashing..... but I am no computer programmer, so ill just do as I am told ;)

Hmmm
I am using Nickl and Jenna a lot. And these are the files that are causing me problems. I have had many crashes, one just a second ago. To be honest I started having problems when I upgraded to the latest version from 3D Attack.
I did a clean install and thought I was over it.
Can someone from there confirm the problem on a Mac. I have downgraded to Jenna 2.22 and will post if the crashes happen again
I really can't do without Nickl!

Rich

Hey thanks a lot man.
Please update us when ever you get time to, if the crashes stop with version 2.22 with Jenna.

Using it this afternoon I didn't have a problem. It's a bit early to tell to be honest but I'll keep you all posted. I am working on a file that uses Path Deformer and Nickl to create an animating ribbon. I was also using CPT to generate some offset twisted splines.
I am using my original Core Arsenal installation that includes CPT 1 Vixol and Jenna 2.22. This was copied from a previous installation and re registered to the fresh install of 9.52

In case of Howzits crash it was definitly Jenna. If you can provide the crashlog we have a chance to determine what happens in your case.

I just got my Quad G5 last week. I'm using the latest version of C4d and I've only had one crash so far. Sorry but I can't remember what I was doing at the time. My scene uses the Jenna plugin so maybe that was it.
The RAM I'm using came from Apple and seems to work fine so far.

Cinema is a disaster on my work machine. It crashes so often and for different reasons...but on my PC at home...rock solid.

Again, please send crashreports with a description on the circumstances to Maxon. Also try without having any plugins installed.
