Maya's renderer is not capable of calculating true GI.
You need to sort out MentalDelay, PRMan 11, AIR 3 or BMRT.

is there a way to fake gi? or is it neccesary to go to other programs? thanks again!
Faking it is very common thing to do. And to get you going, there's a great plugin called GIJoe from Pixho: http://www.pixho.com
There's tons of others you can find from highend3d.com too, just search for something GI-related
or also try this
www.lightengine3d.com
might help you..
you can use virtuallight with his connection to maya its a good
render
