Ukson posted a thread in here that gave me an idea. He posted the environments that got him hired.
it was so cool to see that, that I wanted to see more.

Plus I think it would make a for a great thread.

So here's my Idea: If you have gotten work, because of a specific model/env/whatever/etc... post it in this thread. Let's see what gets noticed by employers. And lets just see some good work.

Post your work in this thread

I guess I'll go first

This character got me work with MVP online. I really enjoyed working with them.

I'm pretty sure this is all they saw

Wow this is a great thread for me to check out. I have just started the whole 3d thing and it will be great for me to see what other people have done to get jobs. It will help me figure out what I should do :)

These were two of the level designs that got me into Epic for the UT2K4 project. My first real industry job. The first game was a mod turned game called Tactical Ops.

I think the only thing you need to get into most art schools is the fat check that they want for tuiton.

david.buttress.me.uk (http://david.buttress.me.uk/) - the portfolio section on there got me my job at Rare two years ago. It was my first job out of uni, so I had no experience either.

Wow! Great thread idea. Nice to know where the bar is.

Desp, I dunno who WOULDN'T hire you with environment work like yours. Not only is it incredibly kickass, but it's running in "actual" realtime. You dominate, dude!

Very helpful thread here, like people have already said. Definitely going to be of some help in the future when I need to dig it up.

Nice work man. I would love to work for Rare. I liked your cheeky little dig at PDZ aswell. haha

Wow! Great thread idea. Nice to know where the bar is.

It is nice to see what other peoples portfolio's look like but companies also hire based on personality, potencial, asking price, etc. I considered posting some of the original work that landed me a job 5 years ago but I am not going too. Instead I am going to share what a Art Dirrector told me 6 years ago at GDC. Your portfolio is not about your best peice, or the average, it's about you worst piece. If you have 10 amazing works and then 1 really crappy one you might not get the job because Art Directors aren't sure if you understand the diffenece between good and bad work.

For someone like myself quality, consistancy are extremely important. It's knowing that I can count on you as an artist.

So... for me personally, it was the work that I removed from my portfolio that mattered more then the best work over all.

Your portfolio is not about your best peice, or the average, it's about you worst piece

This is SO true! I wish there was more to say about it because it's just THAT important, but it's simply true!

if you've ever been in a position to hire someone, or go through a lot of reels/portfolios, you do it too.

..

so true

Yeah, nice thread idea. I had quite a lot of other things in my portfolio, but these were probably the main pieces that got me a job.

actually, on second thought Omita, I'd like to compel you to post the work you mentioned, even if it is 5 years old.

I agree with what you said: "your porfolio is only as strong as it's weakest piece" . My experience has brought me to the exact same conclusion.

non-the-less, it is still extremely usefull to see the actual work itself. in fact I would even ask you to leave in the "worst pieces" because that will help us gain some insight into what an employer not only looks for, but what he is willing to overlook.

the purpose of this thread is to gain insight, find patterns of success, and clarify our direction. even if only a little bit.

and every little bit helps.
