Joined these three figures together, so they are now one sculpture that can be moved/rotated as one unit, and viewed, in 3d from defferent angles.

Hey Glenn!
I love the last composition alot! It has a natural force to it......Really dynamic and fierce!
The only problem is that the wolves on the top right and left look proportionally distorted....I dunno, maybe its lookin like that to only me .....

Ratul ..THANKS....:) When I was joining the lighter colored figure to the other two, it got distorted a little, and started looking more like a lion to me, so I just left it that way..:scream: ..When I got the books from the library on WOLVES, I also got a couple of books on COURGARS/
MOUNTAIN LIONS and GRIZZLY BEARS ...I am thinking of making a composition with all three in it.. WOLVES, COUGARS,and GRIZZLY BEARS...Something on the lines of a RUBENS...like one of his action hunting scenes, where there are guys on horseback doing battle with all sorts of wild anamals...Check his paintings of those hunting scenes out, if you get the chance..then you'll know what i'm talking about, and where i'm coming from with this action composition that i'm thinking of doing...They are great paintings, and for sure worth a look at. Right now, I am mostly concerned with the action and the composition, more so than with the accuracy of the figures..that will work itself out in the end ..hopefully..consider these as just thumbnail sketches, that are just used to get ideas down, and out of my brain, just a place where I can work out the details of the composition.:)
Thank you for the feedback, it's always helpful, and for sure keeps me on my toes...

Hi Glenn,

I really like the last version of the wolf! This blue is great ! I don't like the orange light version's eyes ... try to use some dark color for them... this might give the wolf a more realisitc look ... for me this glowing eyes are not working with the orange ... better: the glow color isn't working with the orange light :)

Keep it up!

Thanks again Glenn!
At first I couldn't find the fight poses you were talking about, as I was looking at posts #87-88. Then I noticed you have 120 pages of stuff in this thread!! Why haven't I ever noticed that before? :D
Well, anyways, really cool fighting poses, the back kick in the post #1315 is very similar to epigeri in TAIDO (both are Japanese combat arts) I used to practise some years back. No much pelvis movement in the front kicks, wery much like Wing Tsun, expec it seems you lean forwards a bit when doing the kick wich is a big no no in WT.

Damn you have a great and helful thread here. Some day I'll read throught the whole thing :)

Hey Glenn,
very nice composition! I like the wolfes a lot, also the dragon fits into the piece. I think the figure riding the dragon does not fit to the image ... first of all this figure looks still very blurred in perspective ... he looks flat ... like a piece of paper ... (hope you understand what I mean) and then I think the lightning on the figure is not like the light on the dragon ... it seems like the shadow of the dragon is missing ?

Looking at this piece brought me the idea of CONTRAST ... try to use a red tone for the eyes ... I think using the orange / yellow eyes you used for the orange wolfes might be work very nice in the blue light version. Just give it a try :)

Keep at it !

Thomas ...THANKS.. ...I just threw that dragon and rider into the scene, to see what it would look like, and because Annette sparked the idea with her saying that the wolves reminded her of the WARGS in Lord of the Rings, so I am surprized that it fit as well as it did, seeing how it was from another totally different painting, with a different lighting senerio..but that is how ideas evolve sometimes ..:)
I like your idea for some contrast of color in the wolves..gave it a shot on the version posted below..also tried to get the dragon and rider to look more at home in the scene..created a whole new mood I think..:)

Nice composition. maybe it needs a bit of background, for now its pretty hard to say where the dragon flies...behind them, above them or in front of them. Considering the scale of the man and wolves I would say the dragon is behind them, but the tail of the dragon is in front of them.

I prefer the blue over the red actually...Feels more natural. Good job on the wolves, nice detailing.

impressive achievement on the 100 pages indeed ;)
good luck with this piece

Bart....THANKS ..:) ..Your right about the dragons tail..makes it hard to judge scale and distance. I also prefer the blue, no red in mouth and red glowing eyes, but it was a fun experiment, and that's the only way to find out what works, and what doesn't,.. sometimes.:)
TAKE CARE
Glenn

Got rid of the end of the dragons tail...and at the same time got rid of alot of the hard edges of the wolves...putting some air blowing, and adding to the atmosphere..gives the scene more unity I think and hope..Also put shadow on the riders hair, making him look further back in the atmosphere...and put a blue tint on the whole scene, unifying the colors .Calling this version done, for the moment anyway.
More wolves to compose, and experiment with..need to get back into the Z BRUSH program and learn more,..and practice more what I have learned so far before I forget how to do what I have just learned.

Your modelling skills are improving excessively!

I am not sure what you are trying to pull off with these experiments. Are you trying to portray mood? A defying composition?

One crit I have with this is that the models seem to stretch awkwardly and the lighting on some of the compositions seem out of place. Repeating models also hurts the visual as the eye spots the similarity almost instantly. Not saying repeated models are bad, just not my thing :D

The two wolves coloured orange is a good one. The wolves may be a little too close together as the edges are creating extra imagery (unless this was intented?).

Nice effort with the colors, but something doesn't stick well here... I think the stone in front draws too much attention. It's a bit over-shiny imho. I like the fade out light effect on the wolves, but the last blue wolf is a bit off the composition.

hey SD san
you know i'v been just feelin to say this but i didnt said this cuz i thought i mite sound rude or someone trying to advice you which isnt for sure but dont you think i wud look more cooler if bisons legs are let limp with gravity instead of being left stiff also i feel like you just stack other animals over each other when you arrange them cuz it makes the bison and others look like a plastic toys to me and somehow ruins the whole effect..just givin my honest thot and i hav no idea if you plan to change them in PS/Painter so...if you can model such detail then i dont think going little further would be difficult at all for you

Hi ....Amrinder...:) ..Thanks for the suggestion...will see what I can do..:)

If you read what is written, then you will know where i'm going and what I have in mind...details like bent legs ect. will be last..That last frame was just about lighting, and nothing else as was written....I am happy with the composition...seems perfectly ballanced to me at the moment, which is no small feat for so many figures..It has the action and movement that I am after. Wolves and other predators that are in packs like lions ect., tend to pile up and climb over each other in an attemp to get their share of the meal....ALSO, when an anamal is being eaten while still alive, which is the case here and will be clear when I PUT THE DETAILS IN THE BISON..THAT ANAMAL IS FAR FROM LIMP...MORE LIKE STIFF FROM SHOCK...Which will be seen in the eye of the BISON... SOON :)
I really appreceate your honest opinion, which is correct as the work stands at the moment,..but it is a work in progress at the moment, and will be refined as I go along...It's not a one two three and it's done in one day kind of painting..I never work that way, and have never had the desire to work that way...THAT'S JUST NOT ME ...THE END RESULTS ARE WHAT MATTER TO ME,...NOT THE SPEED IN WHICH IT TOOK TO DO IT ...:)
TAKE CARE, and THANKS AGAIN for YOUR HONEST OPINION..ALWAYS HELPFUL, AND ALSO AS SAID EARLIER, VERY MUCH APPRECEATED..

Hey Glenn,

HAHA I love the bison's eye ... very funny! This looks as if the bison is still alive andwatching what the guys on it are doing "hey guys get off from me I am not here to be treaten just to be eaten!" :D

What about textures glenn? I think this might be a piece to attempt a little bit more on texture work. Also I would like to see this scene in a different composition ... make the image longer to the left and build in a few wolves running towards the bison ;)

By the way, I think the lightning works great... the scene does not feel as if there are to many characters... good job :)

Keep it up!

AUGUST 26, 2007 .....ANOTHER YEAR OLDER TODAY

Hey,

Happy Birthday Glenn!

You're only as old as you feel, right?

I hope you'll make it a nice one :D
Loving these little adventures you are making here. I was at a huuge expo about Leonardo da Vinci and some contempory artists of him yesterday and I saw what must have been one of the first comic tales, made by Dürer, although the term comic isn't appropriate, it's more of a short story using images...

Somehow I think your thread is like an illustrated novel, different chapters, different characters, different stories fold into one big tale, but always colorful and exciting :)

Have a nice one!

Yea Glenn,

Another year of learning
You got under your belt
To satisfy your yearning
Which since childhood you felt

For making what's within you
Step out into the light
And reach out with your mind to
Beyond the line of sight

Where "dreaming" equals "knowing"
And "playing" means "to see"
Where all of us are going
To be who we should be.

Happy birthday.

I do prefer the second attempt for the clothes. The first one was looking like a heavy fabric made of fur, or something similar.

And Glenn, what about the proportion of the legs? I donīt know itīs because of the cameraīs perspective, but her left leg (calf portion) looks too short. Take a look and tell me if Iīm wrong, Ok?!

Wow, Glenn, this one's turning out really great! Your Z work is getting better with your each new piece, that's more than a plesure to see :) The updates on the 3rd of September look the best to me for now. I assume you're not going for an exact copy of the original sketch by Da Vinci (it's Da Vinci's right? The sketch does look like his), but there's something bothering me about his legs, their length maybe. It's hard to tell because it looks different from every angle. But looking at the original the leg looks shorter. It shouldn't be hard to to experiment with the length by going to the first subdivision level and pushing around.
Looking forward to see what you'll make of it. I'll be watching :bounce:

Agnaldo ...THANKS ...That rough texture was just to build up the surface for more depth, then when you smooth it out a little, some of the depth remains....Your right about the lenght of that lower leg..it changes with the position of the pose..in the final pose, I will just stretch it out if it is too short..whatever works, works...:)

HEY ..RAZZ ...GRAT TO HEAR FROM YOU, AND THANKS...:)
I will get as close to the original as I can..in MOOD/FEELING anyway..that's what I am really after on this one...It wasn't the details that caught my eye when I saw this drawing, ..it was the MOOD/FEELING that it projected..:)

Outstanding. What honestly slows down a little the feeling that I -personally- got with this subject is his right hand. Now it's a little bit "flying" in the space while I have been "trained" by sculptures and paints to see the subject "strongly - bring" it.

Agnaldo ...THANK YOU...Just giving it my BEST SHOT ..:)

Samanthie ...THANK YOU ....I don't know enough about that instant skin color in Z BRUSH to even try it. I have never really been into photo realism, just not my cup of tea.
I feel comfortable with the textures being simple the way they are now...Thinking more along the lines of a sculpture for this, like marble, bronze or maybe even just the red color that it is now. Or a 2 and a half D painting..Z BRUSH /PAINTER #9 COMBO...Maybe both, or even a combination of both..sculpture and painting in one combo painting.
You know,.. I read/heard somewhere that you should not leave the facets showing, because people will know that it was done digitally, like that is somthing to be ashamed of, or embaressed about...must be a traditional arts conspiracy to keep digital art, and digital artist down...I myself, want people to know that my work was done digitally, and am proud of that fact...Tired of trying to fake it into looking like a traditional painting or sculpture...TRADITIONS CHANGE, ALWAYS HAVE, AND ALWAYS WILL.
It's kind of like when electric musical intruments and artist overshadowed the traditional acustical artist and instruments...If the trditionalist had their way, there would never have been ROCK AND ROLL and all of the GREAT music that stemed from it...NO PINK FLOYD  ...Anyway,SORRY,.. Just had to get that off of my chest,..been bothering me ever since I heard it...:)
I just feel that the public will never accept an art form that is trying to pass itself off as something other than what it is..:)

Hey Glenn,

that whole paragraph about traditional and progressive currents is spot on.

You know, I always loved Intervain's thread and her models for the fact that she seldom felt the need to texture those models. She would basically leave them in that grey standard shader which gave away their abstract 3D digital substance they were made of and that really enhanced the sensation for me as a viewer.

Ironically, I think that is a very traditional way to sculpt... I mean, Michelangelo or other traditional masters seldom felt the need to paint the skins of their sculptures to hide the stone these were made of...:scream:

How about listening to music using CDs and DVDs or MP3s instead of a live orchestra? Yes you do not have got live music but you absolutely don't pay the same price and you can listen to your fav music as many times as you want.
It's a strange thing that digital reproduction is so WIDELY accepted in music and so refused in visual art, in the specific brand of illustration.

i like it when the face seems to be the focal point, esspecially in the overhead shot you had a few posts ago, and the close up on the beard shot you had looked really good as well. the last few seem to head on from the side, but then again... this probably isnt for final composition, so.... im gonna stop talking, haha. either way, its a fantastic model :)

Samanthie ..THANKS..Mrs Spirit Dreamer tells me that Merlin also contamplates the ant humanity thought that Old King Solomon thought about..must be a univerial and timeless thought I guess..I might have the ants at the base of the tree of LIFE..My thought at the first sight of DaVinci's drawing that I am working on..posted in here a few pages back, was that the tree he is leaning against, is the tree of LIFE, a commonly used symbol at that time ..Putting the ants in here, along with the tree of LIFE, might add to the thought..Will have to think and dream about it as I work on this figure more..:)

Glenn,

something I can't stop thinking whenever I check your progress on this fella is how nice it would look on my desk.

And how great it would feel in my hand (I envision it to be something like a fistful of material) and how nice it would be to explore all the creases and all with my hands. I always felt it was kind of sad that you are not allowed to touch statues in any art museum (I mean, okay, there's hardly a substance out there in nature which is as aggressively damaging as human hand sweat... certain skunk secretion and cola aside...:D ) so I can understand it, but I feel statues are made for the hands first and then for the eyes.

Maybe, in a few years, consumer technology will be cheap and advanced enough so you can put on gloves and virtually feel the creases of a virtual statue... well, actually, when you think about it: what a weird century!

But I don't wanna complain - in another century I wouldn't even have known about your art, so all is well...:scream:

THANKS GUYS..:)...
I went down to a shop in Salem MA. that sells my works yesterday ..mostly paintings.. ..The owers have a bunch of statues that are reproductions of Italian master works..Venus by Botticelli ect..They are made from some kind of white translucent material that resembles marble....Now ..what I need to know, is,...don't the companies that make the statues from the Z BRUSH figure like the one I am posting do the retopologizing of the figure in their process of making the final real life statue..? ..Is there anyone in here who has had their works made into statues, who can give me the lowdown on what it intails...The ower of the shop would like me to have a statue made from this DaVinci character that I am working on.
Made this guy look like the statues that are in the shop that I visited yesterday

Hello Glenn!

Going a reaaally long way with this sculpt as I see. Having fun, eh? Going to make it as a sculpture of some sort? Like that jade look. Somehow when it has that jade shader it makes me think that the statue is really small. Well jade figures aren't supposed to be big, right? I don't know really. Maybe bronze would a better idea, though jade is something not seen to me in 3d. Ahh, all up to you, just speaking with myself here :)
Just how further are you going to push it? I do like some of the compositions posted earlier. Must be hard to decide what to do with it :D

Just experimenting and playing with this one...GREAT WAY, to explore Z BRUSH futher...just one piece, done many ways,..rather than start something totally new....I just thought I would try a different approach to the way I have been doing, in regards to learning Z BRUSH..just sticking with one piece for awhile, and pushing it as far, and in as many directions as I can..:)

Tim ...THANKS ...:) The dragon is just a personal touch. If you look in the Post a Picture of Yourself section in this forum, first page of that thread, you will see that I have a dragon tatooed on my shoulder..To me, the dragon is the symbol of LIFE, or the FORCE/ENERGY IN LIFE, THAT MAKES ALL LIFE POSSIBLE
This guy ended up kind of looking like me, so I just put that dragon on his shoulder to make it seem even more so,..to me anyway ...:)

Agnaldo
10-02-2007, 04:17 PM
Mr. Glenn,

I fell now youīre starting (just starting) to keep satisfied with that piece :). Itīs great to see how many different views of the same art you can bring to us. From the classics to the "Spirit Dreamers" approaches.

The last one with the bronze shader itīs very good (can be more brighter, like CyborgJA said). But it donīt have your sign in that. I do prefer the colorfull ones.

In that work I see youīve learned a lot of ZBrush. The 3d mesh itīs more refined and detailed and thereīs few areas with messy polygons. That evolution itīs notable. Probably a next step to you is to try to sculpt your own primitives, in a commom 3d software. It will give you more control about your meshes.

Well. I hope you can work more in that piece until you be satisfied. Itīs a pleasure to get inspiration from your work everyday.

See ya,

Serena ...THANKS..:) I will be trying out all kinds of lighting as I go along...I don't want to highlight every detail though...have to leave room for mystery after all...That was DaVinci's secret you know...to make the viewer work their own imagination to achive the pleasure of seeing the details ...:)

Agnaldo ..THANKS...:) I am for sure learning alot from this piece..Still on sub devision level three, so there is still plenty of room and ram for improvements....Another software  ..I am barely scratching the surface with this one...Give me about another ten years, and I might think about trying out another software..:scream:

Hey Glenn,

Hmmm. That lightened variation is interesting too. I donīt know itīs my personal taste but the lights add a lot for the forms, anatomy and the overall look of the image.

Probably I can sound a little dumb, but that light setup youīre working isnīt too clear (I mean, to define whereīs the light is coming). Iīm not a Master about that subject, but Iīd love to share the few and the only informations I most use about Light (in 3D, mainly):

A Article by Amaan Akram

(http://www.warpedspace.org/lightingT/part1.htm)Another article by Richard Harris (http://www.itchy-animation.co.uk/light.htm)

A Video at Youtube (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bwsi9NQWen0)

Probably you already know what this guys are talking about and probably to make a classic three point light isnīt your goal. But I think information is usual, in any way. Hope you donīt mind.
Thatīs it. Keep studying.

THANK YOU ...Samanthie ....About those jewelery boxes....they are really beautiful .. velvet lined, laqured finish..what the company that makes them does, is to put the image/painting onto a ceramic tile with a laqured finish over it..which really brings out the luster/richness in and of the colors of the painting giving them greater depth....then they inlay the tile into the lid of the wooden box..The boxes come in a nice laqured cherry wood finish, or a black laqured finish..both are really nice...:)
If you go to the link that says MY SITE down below this latest image of mine, you can find a link to MY STORE, called THE GLENN on the index on the front page...You will see the boxes in there. I sell them from my online store, plus I have them made up as I need them for the other real life shops that I display and sell them in....The name of the outfit that makes the boxes , and lots and lots of other stuff that you can have your images put on, is called ..CAFE PRESS...They do beautiful work, and their colors in their printing process are spot on.
That last fairy in the woods painting you did would look fantastic inlaid on the lid of one of those jewelery boxes I think..:)
If you are interested in having a box made with that image on it, let me know,...I can have it made up for you through my store, just at cost..I get a cheaper cost because I have a lot of stuff made through/by them..I get a good discount...and can have one made up for you at a very reasonable price...I think you would love it, once you saw and were able to open and feel the jewelery box, with your own image inlaid into it's lid..Just a passing thought, let me know if you are interested...:) and MRS SPIRIT DREAMER/Jessica will have one made up for you,..she does all the buessness and money making with my art, that's her thing,.....I just like to paint...that's my thing...:scream:

Working on an idea for a multi metaled statue.
I have so far,...A bronze base, a silver man, a bronze walking stick, bronze eye for the man, ..Now all I have to do is figure out how to make the dragon turn into gold, and have rubies for it's eyes.
Would be nice to have it made into a real life statue, but it will have to stay in a virtual world,...until I get rich, or some rich person decides to bring it to real life...LOL ..Just dreaming out loud here...I guess that's why i'm called SPIRIT DREAMER ..:)

THE ALCHEMIST WIZARD, and his soon to be GOLDEN DRAGON, with RUBY EYES ...HOPEFULLY...:)

Looking lovely Glenn. I just noticed the top image where he is turned away from view. Interesting to see how you did the stones he is sitting on. Good luck with the ruby eyes for the dragon.

Nice touches you've done so far keep up the excellent work. Have you thought up of a name for the statue?

Hey Glenn,

Iīd like to be drawing more than Iīm talking : ) , but anyway, your thread deserve this.
I really think you got a nice combination with that metals if the purpose for this piece is achieve a "virtual" statue look.

But something keep my attention in this last update: that image is brighter and I can see better youīve worked very well in the back part of the rocks, but, the back part is nicer (in my honestly oppinion) than the front part. The front part looks like the rock was "cutted" by a knife. Is too much straigh, flat, to be a rock. What do you think to put some details there? Not too much, but just something to keep off that flat look.

What do you think about it ? Iīd like to hear your feedback.

Thatīs it. Keep "rocking". : )

Samanthie ...THANKS ...RUBY EYES coming up shortly ..:)

Tim ...THANKS...Not sure about a name yet,...something to do with changing base metals into gold ..ALCHEMY

Agnaldo ...THANKS ...Going for a painting, and a statue with this one.
About the smooth edge of the stone..I used to live next to a place that cut head stones, statues ect. out of granite, marble ect.....they would leave the backside of the stone rough, and polish the cut side, until it looked like glass and showed off the inner grain of the stone...looked just like the way they are in my sculpture..:)

HEY ..Icey....ALWAYS GREAT TO HEAR FROM YOU...Hope everything is GOING GREAT with you and yours..:)
My thread is on top all the time, probably because I spend too much time in front of the computer...:scream: Just doing what I enjoy doing for a change...after working for forty years at hard labor back brakeing jobs..I can finally do what I went to school and learned to do, but never seemed to have had the chance to do...BETTER LATE THAN NEVER....EVERY THING HAPPENS FOR A REASON..:)

OCT. 08, 2007 ....Getting closer to bronze, silver, and gold, through the use of lighting, textures, materials, and masking...but still unable to disconect the dragon from the man..as a seperate sub tool:shrug:
Will keep trying, and hopefully will get it sooner or later,..going for the ruby eyes in the dragon next, each as seperate sub tools..just a glutton for punishment I guess..must be part mule...:scream: :)

Great work! I think it's cool that your doing digital sculptures with Z-brush, and yes that program can get a bit akward at times.
My only critique is that a lot of the folds(especially on the top half) seem more like the wrinkles you get when you sit down for a long time and your shirt in the back gets all scrunched up, instead of folding cloth. Also you should vary the width of your folds and wrinkles so they don't look like you just did them with the same size tool.

Anyways, keep up the good work. You have an amazing gallery, very unique. Your 3d wolves (Night Fury) remind me of Holograms, awesome.

Narender ...THANK YOU...Glad you enjoyed my work..:)

Marcel ....THANK YOU...:) You are right in your crit about the folds being the same size on the lower half,..I was experimenting with a speedy way of doing them with a fancy alpha tool...will fatten, modify, and give a little more variation with another fancy tool as I go along..The wrinklely look in his top jacket,...I LIKE IT...He's been wearing it for a long long time, don't want the perfect folds look...crusty and wrinklely adds to his character I think...OLD and CRUSTY..:)
THANKS FOR THE FEEDBACK, ALWAYS HELPFUL, AND MUCH APPRECEATED...

Started working on the dragons eyes...using sub tools..will stick a brighter red RUBY jewel like set of eyes on top of the first set...which were used to create the shape of the socket...I am new to this approach of doing eyes with sub tools, so will be experimenting alot with them and this approach to doing eyes as I go along..:)

I like the detail work you've done on the dragon's body, and the ruby eyes adds some character to the dragon as well. Are you going to do some similar detail for the wings as well Glenn?

The closup of the dragon makes it look - euhm - hard to explain... It's like the old man is thinking about his dragon and suddenly it appears on his shoulder...
The dragon also seems to be looking at the man with a "are you ok buddy?" look.
But it is known that dragons and humans can create a solid bond with eachother if there is respect from both sides... seems like this is the case here...
