its really amazing how you get depth in your images with such little, blurry brushstrokes...
the values are right on spot I think.
I keep staring at those faces that come out of my monitor. yay!

Lovely heads! Just don't like the yellow. A little too saturated. The zbrush models are really coming along! I found 2 more links that may be useful to you. One is a upcoming tutorial by Alexleia of zbrushcentral:
http://www.zbrushcentral.com/zbc/showthread.php?t=36295&page=1&pp=15
The other is the ztool and obj files used for the leaning posesiden sculpt that was recently plugged.
http://www.zbrushcentral.com/zbc/showthread.php?t=036233
I think both would be great studying aids for zbrush.

looks great man. especially like the top face - older faces always seems to have more personality, more history. Really like the lighting on it. Liking these experiments of yours, keep doing them! Well done:applause:.

It's looking great, I think the stronger you make it at the grayscale stage, the stronger your color version is going to be...love both faces, those are really coming together beautifully! :)

Hey Glenn
looking great as always. Really like your warm colours - you have a great way of working with them. think you could use with some more dark in the middle, just to get the form flowing a bit better, maybe vary hues of the face and the cloth just for some clarity - kust a passing thought.
Awesome work Glenn, always feel refreshed when I come here.

Hi Glenn, popping in again to marvel at how much you've accomplished since I was last here. You're really on a great roll with these heads, much credit to you for sticking with it and trying out loads of different techniques. Something I would do well to do myself, but I got stuck straingin for perfection with every head I tried! You've given me the gusto to maybe try a looser approach though, so thank you!
The last OFDW piece came out really unusually too, in a good way, a great study in colour and loose form. And also good to see some caravaggio inspired Glenn-style colour in those pieces too. Keep up the amazing work, you're really such an inspiration!

No the only 3D program I have is 3DSmax. But I am too lazy to attempt on modeling heads after masterstudies ;) Do you know this program? The textures you can do with it are incredible ... they rock everything :D
Something to your head stuff: Maybe you should decide for 1 head which you are going to detail a little more. If you normally do your heads in 1 hour go and take 2. If you are too lazy like myself, forget what I said :D But I think it would be great to have 1 head on which you worked more and harder. Maybe you got motivated :D I personally could not motivate myself ... soo good luck :D

Yo Glenn
Awesome things going on here as always. This last z-brush dude is looking seriously pissed off at something. Even though he's looking upward he's still feeling huge. You've put him in his own reality, and the big guy is scary regardless of whether he is physically real or not. Even though I've got no time, you're seriously making me want to have a go at z-brush now.

Hi....daWinky.....Thanks for the visit.....Glad you enjoy that style of painting I used on the fifty heads thing....in answer to your question about the time it takes to paint them...It takes about
ten minutes to paint, and about two or three hours of looking and seeing what makes up the particular facial expression....and what creates the mood in the piece...facial muscles at work...lighting....atmosphere ect......Really am likeing those last three heads you did by the way....great job on those...

Hey there Glen :)
Finally managed to browse through your amazing thread, it's been great fun and exciting viewing progress, awesome ideas, wonderful colours and great comments :) I also had a look at your Master Servant entry: that was pretty fantastic :)
Like the feeling of gold in these last ones... interesting to follow the progress :) tend to agree with Rebecca that the more the initial greyscale is worked and perhaps contrasted too, the better the colour seems to work; where the gold becomes this amazing warm light that bounces off the figure/head. The last 2 ladies... love the one on the left... the bone structure in her face seems to really leap out at me, even though she is the one looking down :) With the one on the right... I don't know anything about 3D, so perhaps shouldn't say... her teeth appear too white to me, or maybe too, it's the definition of there being several teeth... the shaded lines inbetween.. but like I said... I'm more a traditional artist so take my words with a grain of salt :D As you yourself labelled these heads: exploring and experimenting - which is the total freedom to push boundaries - and should be just so ;)
cheers and take care

Hi SpiritDreamer,
I tried looking through your thread and got to around page 16, or so. I had a lot of trouble getting pictures to load, so I thought I'd stake a spot here and just keep up with your newer stuff until I can get some more bandwidth going. The stuff I've seen is great! I checked out your tutorials, I'll definately have to have a closer look at them. I had to change my user settings to only load 10 posts per page, though, so now I'm not sure what page it's on. Oopsie. Thanks for sharing so much of your technique with everyone, always great to see. :)

Hey Glenn,
Mr. Teeth looks great - very interesting charcter: from one angle he looks a bit Asian, and from another he looks African. Once again he is bursting with personality and character, as is the case with all your characters. And these 3d stuff feels a lot more natural than other 3d things, probably due to z-brush's natural nature...
thanx for the support!

Wow! Your going to be a pro user soon I think. Really impressive study there. You can use both the stencil tool (to paint real time bumps) and the PM to use the various brushes there. The new features of zbrush 2.5 look amazing. I just hope they release before the end of the year.
Wow Glenn.
The amount of progress you made with this new technology is totally amazing.
I think it is about time that you explored the possibilities of texturing your models. I am not talking about surface structure alone, but also about advanced techniques. For example, did you know you can use photographies of skin texture to paint your model and add incredible skin texture to those models?
Maybe you should start to check out the 3D oriented forums around here, too, or special ZBrush forums.

I still cannot figure out how to SAVE my studes in the 3d form, ,,,so I can go back to them later, after I exit the program, and still be able to spin them around....I tried saveing them as a tool, but the program keeps telling me that the demo version won't allow that....very frustrating...  ...I just keep saveing them as documents...which ends the 3d fun part...:scream: ....ANY IDEAS....ANYONE
I plan on buying the new version of Z BRUSH, as soon as it becomes available.

have you tried exporting the new model as .obj file? Don't know if the demo can do it but it should...
they are really becoming better and better... have you been using alpha projections at all? or just the basic tool set?
Womball
08-04-2006, 03:40 PM
This is the limitation of the demo. You'd have to buy the software to save ztl. files. I don't thin you can export obj files either. Or import them for that matter. Its definetly worth the money especially since you get the 2.5 upgrade for free. I got it cheaper due to student discounts. But its about 500 for the software.

So far I have just been using the sphere for the heads....pressing...T....then ....Z...then..Ctrl-D
to make smother....using the basic tool set to do the pulling, pushing, and carving ect...saveing
versions that I like as documents as I develope the head....then I go back into those versions,
when they are not 3d anymore, and refine them further with the basic tools or brushes in the program.....then I export my favorite versions into painter#9, where I try to turn them into paintings ect. and just experiment and play with them to see what kind of effects I can get, using colored spotlights ect.....just starting to play with the textures in the Z BRUSH program...makes some real looking
whiskers...:) ...Not sure what to do with the ALFA and PROJECTION things yet...but will start pushing buttons I guess, and will see what happens...:scream: :)
....THANKS for the help...anything more would be much welcomed and greatly apreceated...

oh, try doing a sphere tool - then pressing the change into 3dpolymesh button - then go to layers and clear layer ... then take the tool that you've made [the 3d poly mesh sphere] and use that... you'll be able to sub-divide it [that' s in the tool-geometry-divide] and use all the alpha channels with the projection master ... then again I think projection master's not working with the demo version... :/ sorry... don't know...hehehe. Hi again Glenn :)
Great to see the way these heads are flowing and growing - you are doing some really good stuff here :)
Love the different textures in the last one, feathered hair, rough and smooth skin, the way you've done that soft shading on his neck :) delicious
My only comment is his ear.... looking at the ear itself it feels less resolved than the other features, know you are doing a lot of work on teeth ;) so don't want to add unnecessary stress as so many features are coming together in a great way, love the strength that's coming through these more resolved heads :) .... his ear is a bit too close to his nose, (too far forward in face) and needs to be brought back into hairline a bit.. lining up with bottom jawline. As I've not tried the ZBrush, I have no idea what the limitations in terms of detail and how you work it.... but if you can get a darker shade into the centre of the ear... perhaps do some seperate sketches of your "problem babies" looking at close-up views to get a feel for the anatomy and structure :)
Apart from that, great :bounce: and love to see more!
Take care and cheers

Of course it was great to meet you at SIGGRAPH, and I hope you get the chance to see the pictures that I posted from the event here (http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?t=378493). Hi Glenn ... ok I am going to do my best to explain ... but I have no idea if or how zbrush supports this ... I have uploaded an old example of a model I made (This is an old image but I hope it works). Look at the grey rendering ... you see? This is like your renders are ... only lightend and well ... grey. Then look at the colored part? You see it is like an image ON the surface of the model. I can explain you how to do this with 3dsmax but not with zbrush sorry ... maybe you should ask in some other forum here on cgtalk if there are some zbrush cracks who can help you with this. Did you understand what I mean with this textures? It is like coloring the surface ;)

Hi ....Trunks....I saw a demo at the convention in Boston, on Z BRUSH...IT can do what you have in that link you posted, and then some,...but that look is not what I am after at the moment...I am after something totally new, using something that is totally new... and what I am seeking, won't be found while following in the footsteps of others.

Hey Glenn!
That last zbrush is stunning!! Read your reply to Trunks - think you have totally carved your own vastly unique way through this jungle. Your works are unlike any others, as is evident in this last one: it has a traditional, painted feel to it, loving your emphasis on character. The form and texture work wonderfully together. Often with 3d things I get the feeling the picture was made for the model - here the model has been made for the picture - and the picture is what matters.
Amazing work as always, never a dull moment here!

well, textures.... if that last terrific character design is'n heavily textured I don't know what is... This and the previous head are like conclusion masterpieces of your head modelling efforts and studies. So much expression and uniqueness about it.
I am looking forward to your torso studies, but also to what happens when you take your shots of the models you created and take them as starting points for real elaborate paintings in Painter. Right now I would say you only hinted at what could be done in Painter with these, which is probably because you are still focused mainly on the modelling part.

:scream: Really, man, that is wonderfully honest and straight to the point. Just the other day I was wondering myself why the heck I end up with female torsos 6 out of ten times when I loosely doodle... And you sort of just made up the true and perfect caption for any of those sketches that start with a lovely S-shape and end in fond memories...:scream:
ah, did I mention your model rocks?
It rocks.

Looking forward to more, and muchothanx a buncho for the tons of help and support!

Hey Spirit Dreamer!
I just finished a long journey of watching all pages of your sb..(glad i upgraded my line connection)!
What can i say..I see huge amounts of dedication which i respect a lot! Also lots of experimentation which is always good!
The Rembrandt portrait was really great, and i'm curious to see where the Albert Moore(?) study is going also!
The only crit i have(it's only my humble opinion)is that i would like to see a bit less saturated colors..I couln't read all the previous comments in your sb,maybe someone else already said that. But i know that color is something very personal to each artist so feel free to ignore my comment.:)
I will be definately checking back!
Keep it up!

Hello....Polonoid...:)
THANK YOU...for taking the time to go through my entire thread....don't think that I have even
managed that...too many pages...:scream: .....really glad you enjoyed it...:)
About the bright colors....I find that about half the people think they are too saturated...bright,
and the other half, love the bright colors....so I guess that old saying applies here....you can't please everyone, and only a fool tries....In the end, you will be happier I think, and are better off pleasing yourself, instead of pleasing others.....plus the bottom line is....those bright saturated colored paintings of mine, are the ones that seem to sell the most....some people just love color....myself included.....would be a very dull world I think,...if everyone had the same taste, when it comes to color.
I try to keep an open mind though, and I do quite a few dark ,toned down paintings also,....but
somehow,...I always seem to drift back toward the bright saturated colors that I LOVE ...:bounce: :)
THANKS AGAIN for checking out my work....your opinion, and everyone elses in this forum, for that matter, mean a lot to me, and are always taken seriously, when applicable...:)

Hi Glenn
You so got your own style, its so refreshing to see your take on anatomy. I love the way you handled the nose/eyebrows in the pirate one. the tooth and the textures on the cheek (beard) are looking a bit weird..maybe you should smoothen the teeth a bit, they look kinda crumbled this way. anyhow, keep up the good work, really enjoying it :applause:

Hi again Glenn :)
Always a pleasure to pop back and see what's happening here in your happy colourful and very exciting thread!
The pirate is way cool! I love the colours and his earring and the textures in his face  I like the teeth too... the colouring that makes them look like they are typical gold-capped pirate teeth ;) The only thing about the teeth though.... they are a bit too far forward... sort of like they are coming out of his upper lip rather than the top jaw... other than that... great :)
I love your torsoes too :) want to see more of them :bounce: Like the way you've added so much movement. My only comment on the female torsoes would perhaps be to define and make the area between the breasts a little wider to allow the breasts to move a bit more independently of each other :) Then again - fond memories and the fact that all are shaped in different ways, allows you the creative freedom to recreate as you please :)
cheers and take care

Hi....EVERYONE...:)
JUST GOT ...Z BRUSH #2 THIS MORNING
MRS SPIRIT DREAMER bought it, and gave it to me for my BIRTHDAY ....:bounce:
Now I can save things in 3D...FINALLY
The demo version that I have been using for the last few months, wouldn't allow me to save anything in 3D....So whatever I created using it, had to be done in one sitting...very frustrating...But at the same time, it forced me to work fast, so I guess it had a positive side to it......Anyway,...here is the start of my first creation using my NEW Z BRUSH #2
Only about ten minutes into it so far,....but as I said...now I can go back to it anytime, and
work on it in the round ......BEAUTIFUL....:)

Hi.....Cyanid...THANKS..... In answer to your questions about time, and references
The Z BRUSH head's usually take anywhere from 15 to 20 minutes to creat the basic shape..skull face , nose, eyes, mouth, ect.....Then creating the expression takes another
15 to 20 minutes....Last but not least, the refinememt can go on for hours...that's where
all of the experimentation takes place...I am new to Z BRUSH, so still trying to see what it is capable of...a whole lot to learn,...but I am just taking it a day at a time, and learning something new with each experiment, and so far am really enjoying this amazeing program.:)
About using refferences on these Z BRUSH heads and figures....So far, they have all been created from own imagination...just is easier for me to do it that way, while exploring this new program...not stuck trying to get a likeness that way, and also allows me the freedom to PLAY,and have FUN, with this new TOY...EASIER for ME to LEARN that way...:scream: :)

The Earth Spirit is coming along especially nice. It is taking on forms which would be sort of charming to tactile senses. It looks just like the kind of little sculpture which you would play with all day long if it was resting on your desktop. Nice flow of forms and everythings smooth about it.

HHey Glenn,
that surely does look like bronze to me. Must be fun to be in control over all the parameters of the software so much that you can achieve a goal you set beforehand.
As concerns that service, I will have to do some research again. But I think you get a plastic miniature and there's not much choice about the material. I think they sort of cut it with a laser out of a powder or something...damn 21st century...:scream:
but you would have a form you could work with if you'd decide to do a bronze sculpture.
EDIT:

You will notice a lot of techtalk when it comes to the requirements the models have to meet. Here's a suggestion: should you feel like it's all too complex to grasp what you would have to mind while modelling I just suggest you ask one of the ZBrush savvy guys around here to convert your model and check wether it meets the requirements of that service (one of the requirements is for example that the surface of the models should be modelled without holes...)

Glenn,
the surface materials look great. I favour the blue one as it is tranquil and mysterious.
I would say, however, that you should mind the glossiness of the material. The ultrasmooth and very bright highlights disguise the forms sometimes. I don't remember now where you can specifiy how glossy the surface is... ask the manual...:D
:scream:
SpiritDreamer
08-26-2006, 01:18 PM
Mr Mu: That glossy is that pearl looking white marble in the materials section. With a texture from the texture section laid on top of it. Don't know what I am doing but having fun with all these combinations. I have been reading the directions, are these in English? I don't remember hearing this language before...I better get a degree in rocket scientry.
Question: Do you know how to save the tools with their textures? Something like saving objects with markers? I haven't quite deciphered this. Help!:scream:
Thanks and Take Care
Glenn
I have been reading the directions, are these in English? I don't remember hearing this language before...I better get a degree in rocket scientry.
LMAO..:scream:
as concerns saving tools with the textures/materials... I don't know. I let my trial of ZBrush expire as I was not going to pursue it any further. So, you sort of jumped head first in unkown waters....:D
But there definitely are ZBrush experts around who also frequent your thread. You might
a)
wait for someone to answer this question in this thread.
b)
ask the same question in the OFDW thread, because it is frequented by more people and the 3D people, too. Moreover, it is a thread meant for learning purposes, so it fits well in there.
Hope you will overcome this obstacle just like all the others on your digital journey

It's looking great, I love the pose and the anatomy. Keep it up! :)
I must, to my utter embarrassment, admit that I just now grasped the idea fully.
Amazing composition of the model itself. As for a painting I would say see to it that it's either not dead center or have the viewer watch the scene slightly from below so we have to look up to her. That might be pretty impressive...
The earth texture should be a larger resolution so you don't get those pixelated edges on the continents (like this one, e.g.: http://cims.clayton.edu/itsd4305/lectures/EarthMap.bmp )
Or, if you are planning on painting on the globe anyway it's of course not that important as you can smoothen it out in Painter, then...
Anyway, wonderful idea, Glenn. Sort of personifies earth itself. :)

Hey Glenn,
in the lower version her face has got more details. Is that due to the lighting or did you sort of add those few lines in Painter? Anyway, those make a huge difference!
I like the totally fat blue hue of the upper image. Has something calm and peacful about it and while the environment of haze in the lower image serves the image very well I would rather see the blue hue preserved somehow...

Your Earthspirit/Spiritearth is looking awesome! The shape, colours and the concept - it's organic, human and at the same time it lets imagination wander... I love the way you've subltely introduced her face in the bottom one.. the way she's looking down on earth - in a protective way :) both colour schemes are good, although they each convey a different feeling... I prefer the bottom one, it's got a sense of the elements around and the almost underwater feeling in the green.
Keep it up :) and as always; it's a pleasure to see your work
Take care and cheers

Love how the woman is getting more evident. The forms are coming along nicely. From the three images in you last post, the second one looks the best to me. I think it's because of the glow on the earth and earth spirit's legs. And it really shows how she is growing out of the earth. Lovely

This last one is interesting... for some reason I'm drawn into the reflection in the glass ball - looking into a room with the large ceiling window and benches or something around the walls??? possibly unintentional? :D Anyway will be exciting to see where you take it, I like the gravity-defying feeling! Not too sure about the large droplet stalagmite (?) but knowing it's unfinished it is probably just the way I'm looking at it.

Trying out a broader composition and color arangement...like the atmosphere in this one...will sharpen up details...maybe put a tiny river meandering into the atmosphere,..lower bottom left...leading toward cocoon...will give an illusion of depth, and make the main scene

Dear Glenn,
you're such a colourfull person and it shows in your work. Love it how you unite all these vibrant colours and make them fit well together
I really loved your Earth Awakening piece and your last one seems to come along just fine as well.
just wondering... are those stalactites? I mean from ice maybe, since you mentioned the scene semes to be at a really high altitude. Maybe they need a bit more highlights.
The cocoon edge, where it is busted open, seems a bit hard to me, looks like it's tennant would have a hard time getting out.
but those colours.... vibrant yet so peaceful... mjammie :D

Hi.....Paolodelarosa.....THANK YOU for stopping by.....glad you enjoy my colors and the concepts...:)
Those links on color that Rebecca posted on your thread, should help you out on your journy into color. I have a few things about color written down in this thread ...SOMEWHERE BACK THERE..LOL.
Right now I am mostly experimenting with complementary colors in my paintings, using a 1 percent to 9 percent ratio...like 1 percent red, and 9 percent green kind of thing...makes the colors glow and vibrate.
I learned alot about colors in a color theory class many years ago, ..but now it is kind of like reading to me...I JUST DO IT...BUT CAN'T REALLY EXPLAIN HOW IT IS DONE..
The best thing is to just experiment alot, study the colors in masterworks, from the real paintings if you have access to any...galleries, museums..ect...photo's tend to lie, when it comes to color...they are limited by the printing process...same goes with computer images.
Hope this is of some help...best I can do at the moment...:)

hey glenn! While you explore that new dvd you have, pay special attention to the zspheres. I think it will help you ALOT once you understand how to use them and it should give you much more creative freedom.
Zspheres is a tool to create a "base mesh" for your sculpture. what this does is give you sufficient geometry so that you dont get any "rough" parts. for example, in your latest sculpture you werent able to define the shapes and forms in the head as well as you defined the torso. with a base made with zpheres you'll be able to define the entire figure much easier.
using zpheres is kinda like creating a skeleton for your figure, allowing you to rough out forms and even define the pose. When i make a clay sculpture, I use wire to rough out the pose, height, and it supports the clay in place. This is almost exactly what zspheres do.
(im trying my best to explain this, since i know this is a new experience for you.)
The zbrush wiki illustrates this much better than i do so heres a good tutorial link for zspheres. http://www.zbrush.info/site/index.php/ZSphere_Tutorial:_Biped_by_Ryan_Kingslien
(by the way. the zsphere tool is in the tool section, last icon in the third row.)
zbrush has an incredible community full of people who like to share information. The main "hub" for this community is at www.zbrushcentral.com (http://www.zbrushcentral.com/) . Theres a tutorial forum that you might find helpful. Theres alot of resources there. Much of the information is for 3d modelers who use zbrush to detail a model they made in another application so you might have to "filter through" the information you dont need. Theres also another section where people post their artwork. Its a fantastic website for inspiration and finding information.
Maybe alot of this stuff you knew already and if so, forgive me for ranting :D . you've got a very unique style and I cant wait to see your skill with zbrush develop even further. I hope this was helpful?

Whoa your doing this all from spheres?!? Once you figure out zspheres your going to be able to create some really crazy stuff!
Jason Belec of zbrushcentral has a great big thread on zspheres creations, with ztools you can download. Here is some more info and the link to Jason's thread I think.
http://www.zbrushcentral.com/zbc/showthread.php?t=34199&highlight=jason+belec
Things to be aware of at zbrushcentral. There is a really odd facination with Alex Ross inspired Superman (batman looks cooler and Alex Ross painted a ton of other cool characters) and Boris Karlof Frankenstein's creature. Also they seem to respect portraits and busts more than whole bodies. Not sure why that is.

Hi....Shyam...:)
You would probably really get into 3d....very addictive....:scream:
That guy I am working on, is based on the memory of a guy I used to work with, he is the body guard for the head of the teamsters union in Boston. His nane is Jimmy the BULL...Stands about
five feet tall, and is about four feet across at the shoulders...wieght about two hundred pounds...solid muscle ...will run you over like a bull if you get in his way...:scream:
That is why I posed him that way...I was helping him load a safe onto a truck one day, pushing it up a steep ramp into the truck. I was in front guiding it, as he was behind, pushing it up the ramp.
He pushed so fast and hard, that I almost fell over backwards, and almost got run over by a thousend pound safe, and a two hundred pound BULL...Always stuck in my mind ..LOL :)
Anyway, I think the proportions will stay as they are in reality with this one.
Would be a boreing world, if we were all the ideal proportion, that every one is so hooked on..:scream:

Started working on forams, wrist, hands, shoulders, back...also put a twist in the figure, and made the upper legs longer, and started working on the knees...still a long ways to go, but getting there...This will be the first full figure that I have done using Z BRUSH.
Totally created from imagination..no refferences used...just testing my memory, and exercising my imagination, while exploring Z BRUSH..:)

Glenn,
your 3D models really have that old master feel...
with this you are acknowledging my choice to study 2D before starting 3D (I was fooling around with blender3D a lot without having created anything good before I started drawing)
This is all very inspiring you know...
Keep spoiling our eyes!

DONE
REAL MAGIC

Wow, Glenn, this touched me on a wonderful level, there is something that sings in harmony with me, about the colours, the composition, the abstract element. Its beautiful, unlike anything I've seen, which is always a wonderful thing to come across in art.
Your figures are coming on wonderfully too, it really looks like you've found a great tool for you in ZBrush. The last one has a real classical greek feel to it, like Zeus, would really love to see you take your carravaggio touch to this one when its finished in 3D.
Hope you're well. Always a pleasure dropping by this thread.

THANK YOU ...NR 43...:) ...You are right about learning to draw and paint anatomy first,
before doing 3D
I can't see how anybody could do otherwise, but I quess a lot of people try to jump the gun, so to speak, and end up having to backtrack.
I didn't have that option myself, ...this digital age was not around when I went to art schools.
3D is a big challenge for me to learn, but I am really enjoying the challenge.
Really glad, and happy that you are finding my work enjoyable and are getting some inspiration from it. THANK YOU for the kind words, keeps me motivated... :)
Zephyre / SpiritWind.....THANK YOU....MADE MY DAY...:bounce: ...My goal, is, and has been all along, to CREAT something NEW, and never before seen, with this NEW TECHNOLOGY.
Just a personal goal / dream that I created for myself, when I fist started doing digital, and saw the possibility was there...The future will be the final judge I guess...:)
Planning on turning this new figure into a painting for sure...I have a few ideas rolling around in my head for it...will have to sleep and dream on it some more, before I decide on which one is best...:)
THANKS AGAIN...NR43 AND SpiritWind ...for making my day BETTER... :)

Use shift d to go down to the lowest sub d level. Than work out all of your masses and proportions. Than hit d 2 times and use ctrl and left mouse button to define masked areas. This is how you use make your muscles, since it will allow you draw out crisp muscles. The lumpiness you smooth out while your drawing on an inverted mask. To invert the mask to draw on the masked out areas, click ctrl+lmb off the figure. drag and ctrl click off the character to delete the mask.
Alright I am laying off the womball whip. ;-) Sorry about that. Also for lighting you might want to experiement with Film's 3 point lighting. My goal with 3 point lighting is to use shadows to create a very sculptural form, and the rim light (back light) is used to pop the figure off the background. The fill light is used to less the intensity of the shadows from the main key light.

Hey spirit dreamer(s) hehe i read rebecca's introduction to your thread :)
Thanks so much for your kind words on my thread, it means a lot from such a forum presence as yourself (ves). hehe.
I actually studied 3D myself, the 2D is more of a hobby, though obviously they help each other, but i work as an animator. Ive recently started learning zbrush myself, so maybe ill post up a z-torso soon :)
Anyways, thanks for being such a forum presence, and an inspiration :)
catcha soon :)

Hi.....Womball....THANKS for the great tips and links ....always helpful. I will try them out for sure...
Hi....Cavematty.....THANK YOU..:)
I have been on this forum from the very get go. I hope I have helped some people along the way. It is a two way street though, and a lot of people in here have helped me also.
It's a system that workes well, for everyone involved. A global art community, is something that has never accured,or been possible until NOW. Pretty AMAZEING, when you stop and think about it. Should lead to some GREAT ART, and ARTIST, I THINK.
I am just glad, and thankful that I have been, and am part of it, and may have in the process, contributed something positive toward and to it....TIME WILL TELL
Would really like to see some of your Z BRUSH WORK
Hi...Anandpg....THANK YOU..:)
I have had a bunch of people in this forum helping me to try to understand Z BRUSH, and I hope you will be one of them also.Your step by steps with Z BRUSH in your anatomy thread already have been of a great help, as a matter of fact.
I bought a DVD by Glen Southern of Kurv Studios...Get Into Z BRUSH....Reccomended by Cris Palomino, who is in this forum also.
That DVD has been a huge help to me. I have just started to check it out, in the last couple of weeks...It's great, because I can stop it , and go back over what was explained over and over, and over, until I get it...LOL:) ...I also like to get off of the beaten path, and just go exploring ...keeps it exciting and makes it an adventure..:)
I am really glad that you enjoy my paintings. Will be more to come for sure. Right now, I am
just trying to learn Z BRUSH, so that I can use it's magic in my paintings. I don't think that I wil ever get into anamation...I am having a hard enough time already with exploring and experimenting with 2D.:scream: ..And a whole lot of pleasure and fun of course also..:)
Wouldn't want to bite off more than I can chew, at this point in my life...old enough to know better,...and still young enough to enjoy what I do know...and WISE ENOUGH TO KNOW THE DIFFERENCE....LOL :bounce:
THANKS FOR THE FEEDBACK EVERYONE

A practice in using flat, diffused lighting, to creat atmosphere, enhance mood, and to soften this otherwise hard sculptural Z BRUSH figure.
Thinking of creating the illussion of a cielling painting, with figures floating upward through the air, vaporizing into the atmosphere and diffused light.

Woke up at 3am this morning...was bugged at how to make these figures appear to be wieghtless and floating through the air, instead of heavy sulptures done in Z BRUSH.
Think I figured it out..:scream: .....Now I have a system to work on the cielling painting that I envisioned, using the figures that I creat in Z BRUSH along with Painter # 9

Man, you're like the energizer bunny, Glenn. :bounce:
Nice ZSphere work. Those sturdy guys of yours are really having at it, aren't they?
I always love coming in here and seeing what you are up to.
Glad Glen's dvd has been helpful to you.

Hey, Glenn. Was always looking at your updates. Loves that you've done the three graces of your own, hehe. Was really nice to see it  And the later work, great. Somehow I just want to call him Hercules. Don't know why. Maybe because of all the muscles and his beard. I like the thing that you always experiment with the lighting and have something good in mind, trying to reach for it, not just filling the image with effects.
Keep up with it, please.
Ha, energizer bunny :D
Man, I've been so busy and have missed out on the action here for the past few days . I love the way you're experimenting with the placement of the figures and the lighting. I think the lighting you used in the last one really expands the space that the figures are in- it's very cool indeed .
I have to admit, though, that my favorite is actually #737. I really dig the way the two forms create this tension as they push towards each other- They look like two Spartan wrestlers or something. In fact, the opposing lighting intensifies things by making it seem the two 'fighters' are coming out of the light and into the 'darkness' of battle. The way that you've pitted warm light against cool coming from their respective 'corners' also helps to peg the two figures as adversaries. mmmmmmmmm. Maybe I'm thinking too much :curious:.
Awesome work as always.......

Hey Glenn :)
Yes! energizer bunny seems appropriate ;) been inundated with work the last week and half and had haven't had a chance to pop in, WHOOOOOSHHH! all these new things popping up :)
You really are a great experimenter and the way you play and let the playfulness show in your work, great thing! I like the floating feeling in your figures, floating yet at teh same time their strength is obvious with all those muscles on sturdy men... interesting combination!
Like the colour and will be exciting to see where you take them
Take care and cheers!

THANKS...Myku.....No,...your not thinking too much..All of those thoughts concerning light and dark forces went through my head, when creating the lighting on that one...also the thought of creating depth with two colors...:scream:
THANK YOU...Razz....Glad you enjoyed those three graces...nice idea you had there . Also glad you are enjoying my journy,...hope it helps you in some way on yours, which is off to a FANTASTIC start by the way. :applause:
THANKS ...Cris...Panic sets in, so much to say, so little time left....An effect that for sure produces a lot of energy.:scream: .....Yes,...That DVD is a huge help to me...can't thank you enough for leading me in that direction...

A little closer to the way I visualized this painting. This is the farthest point up...figures will get bigger, and more defined, with more colors ect. as they get lower in the composition, and closer to the viewer. This is just a practice for the final painting, which will have lots of varied figures, male and female, intertwined ect....Just dreaming out loud here..:scream: :)

Amazing modeling as usual :D I think it will look great with more combinations of colors like you said. it will add more life i believe. I'm looking forward to the finished piece =>
Hey Glenn.
I must say I liked the one composition better where they both wrestled or pushed each other.
But if you pursue them flying or hovering then I have a question:
is it possible to switch back to the ZSpheres mode and tweak the pose of some of the models? You could bring in a greater variety not based on the tilt or turn of the bodies alone, but you could have some of them stretch their arms upwards or the bottom-most models crouch like a tiger before jumping high into the air or something.
Just a thought from the dark corners of this thread wherein I lurk...:scream:

Hi Glenn..
Nice compositions  .. I think you will go a long way with ZBrush..
One quick question... would you consider using another more traditional 3d Package(like Maya or 3dsMax) to position your ZBrush figures in space? ... thats what I always do..
Advantages are that you get a readymade 3D environment with perspective and multiple orthographic views for realistic positioning of objects.. among others. On the whole, I think you will feel the freedom of an additional dimension more if you use a traditional package. ZBrush is great for sculpting, but when it comes to positioning things in 3D space, i have felt that it is just 2.5D .. or it maybe that I havent explored all the possibilities.
