Second attempt at Zbrush...still playing with brushes...
How do I spin this around, Mr Mu?

Hey I don't know! I don't have Zbrush - but there's a trial you say?

I will download a trial and dive into the doc and the app. Mainly to get you going, because I find that combination (you/Zbrush) absolutely thrilling!

We will complement each other perfectly: I read the doc and you try everything without asking first!:scream:

Moved my Zbrush dragon into more familiar territory - Painter 9
Played with it for about a half hour
Still a lot of work to do on it.
Just experimenting to see how far I can take it.
Trying to get the most from each program.
Still can't figure out how the 3D aspects of Zbrush work. :banghead:
But like the textures and effects I have played with so far.
Will go well with Painter 9, I think

Hey Glenn,

I have had a frustrating time trying to understand ZBrush til I had a friend tell me what the first steps are all about.

Actually, I am still thinking about an efficient way for putting all my information for you together, but here's a very rough starter:

- left side: there's the "Tool" button. If you click on it, the third row will give you so-called 3D primitives which are simple spheres and cubes which you can put on the canvas.
- choose a simple sphere
- click+drag to place it on teh canvas
- hit "T" to enter edit mode
- click with your pen to add clay to the sphere
- alt-click with the pen to carve into the sphere
- click-drag outside the sphere to rotate it.

This is just to throw you into another room with the lights all very dim, but the way you are the next moment I will check back the whole room will be on fire...:scream:

And if it's not working or too confusing: Don't forget! I am learning to master ZBrush's ways to put this all together in a legible way.

Did I mention your dragon rocks the freaking building? I knew this would be... just right...:D

Refining dragon further. Gave him his upper canine tooth that was missing. Softened far edge of his nose edge area. Putting him in atmosphere so he doesn't look like a cut out. Working on refinement of eye next

Mr Mu:
Thank you!! I will be trying out your instuctions shortly!
Really appreciate your help on this!

Hi Lyneran/Anne:
This is 2D - so far - but might turn it into a 3D with Mr Mu's help!
Thanks alot for your kind words.
Really love your latest portrait painting - has air,
which is what I am trying to do with this dragon at the moment.

Glenn!

This is the most impressive of all the Dragons you ever made. I admire your vision for this creature anyway as it is quite unique, but this one takes the cake.

I just wanted to let you know that in Zbrush you can also paint with materials and colour directly on the created model, but that is an information I will have to embed in a more detailed explanation so you can make proper use of it - just keep in mind that you can do a lot of steps in Zbrush beyond the pure modelling.

I am too drunk and too tired right now to get this right so I will have to postpone it....(just so you get an idea - this is how this sentence looked before heavy editing: "I am too drunka dn too tired tight..." )

off to bed

THANKS.....MR MU....just now finishing up on the eye, and a couple of other little details.
This is the part that I hate, and love...I ether push it to far, and ruin it, or stumble upon
something that really improves it......searching for perfection......:scream:
Ruined many a good painting using traditional mediums, right at the end.:banghead:
Great thing about digital, is that will never happen again....will always have the diferent
versions saved, and will have learned something new from each one...bigest problem ends
up being...making the decission of which one is best....LOL!!
Wonder if the next generation wll realize how lucky they are to have this great technoligy
to learn from, or if they will just take it for granted, and not realize how hard it used to be.

How about...SPIRIT KING or KING SPIRIT for a name...kind of like them, but will have to dream on it a little before I decide...:)

Just now getting ready to try out those instructions you gave me, for spinning him around ect.
Will let you know how it works out tonight, when I post my latest and probably last version
for this dragon....and hopefully will be able to talk to you over the weekend...

Worked on dragons eye some more and top eyelid -
Think I like this version better than the last one - At the moment anyway - LOL

Also with the help of Mrs Spirit Dreamer and Mr. Mu -
both of whom I owe a great deal of thanks to - For their support and technical knowledge of computers -
and their strange German ability to read and understand instructions -
I was able to create my first 3D sculpture - a very meager start for sure -
but a start none the less.
Can only get better from this point on.

Hey Glen.

It's nice to see you're getting into Zbrush and I hope you liking it so far, very different then conventional 3d modeling it is.

I'm really liking your dragon, its a 2.5D painting right? (or a digital relief is probably more descriptive) - if so, are you planing on taking it into a full scale 3d model?
there are some neet techniques to take a 2.5D painting and make it into a 3d model, if your interested I could probably cook up a short tutorial on how to do that - I'm on the laptop now so its gonna have to wait until I get home where I have Zbrush.

keep spiriting away.:)

Hello Glenn,
Great !:bounce:seems like u are having some serious fun with ZB2.
I received morphos the shape changer, was feeling rather bad that Hogarth couldnt complete the whole thing!

Regards

Siju

A small tip for ZB sculpting, use the subdivisions to your advantage, say u want to make a drastic change do it on subd level 1 then smooth it on level 2 , that is press alt and smooth with the same brush in subd level 2.so u retain a lot of the detail.

Hi......David....THANKS for stopping by, and ...YES FOR SURE....a small tutorial would be GREAT
I was wanting to make a 3D sculpture with that dragon, but not sure about how to go about it.
I was hopeing that I could take it into PAINTER # 9 and work on it there, where I know what
i'm doing, and then put it back into the Z BRUSH program and go back and forth between
programs, but am not even sure if this is possible. I think I may have lost the option of
turning the finished dragon that I just posted into a 3D sculpture because when I finished
it up in PAINTER#9, I changed it to BMP to work on it....one layer painting is the way I do paintings.....So a tutorial like you mentioned would be great...at the moment, I am just
stumbleing around in the dark with Z BRUSH, so any help would be greatly appreciated and
welcomed...:)

what level thing you are talking about...LOL!!
As concernes that Hogarth book....I did not know it was his last book until I got it, and read it.
Seems to me, that you should be the one to complete it, seeing how your drawings capture
the same vitality and expressive force as his did...think it would be a great tribute to him, and
he would be honored by it.... i'm sure, ..in spirit if nothing else...where ever he may be..:)

Corvax!
Pleas do a tutorial about how to transform a relief into full 3D, because I don't know a thing about that and would greatly appreciate it.

Glenn,

Nice to see you exploring ZBrush scultping.
What Siju was referring to was the level of detail for any 3D form.
I am afraid I don't know how to change to and fro between the various levels.

Here's what I do to increase the level of detail:
If you find the tool menu (the one in the top menu row - at the right hand side) you will see a menu item "geometry".
There you can divide or subdivide the surface of the model to smoothen it. The higher you go the more time this will take and the more your PC will have to calculate for editing, but you have much more detail in your sculture.

Looking forward to everyone's pieces of information and to your scultures.

P.S.: As concerns the Dragon's name: I was thinking of something like Arabamon the Golden. Something that would make you bow before his majesty when formally introduced to him.

SPIRIT WIND ....Always a pleasure to have your warm thoughts blow by ....:)

In answer to your question concerning PHOTO SHOP.....I never have gotten around to trying

it out...LOL ...starting to get the hang of it ...slowly but surely..:scream:
The workup for the finished face is on the preceeding page of this thread, in cace you are

I wanted to have something more than a face when I was done with it, so I created a painting around it....all from my own imagination...no refferences used at all...wanted to
make this entire painting totally my own vision, using my own inner vision to creat it.
Everything except the human face was done in PAINTER # 9...OIL BRUSHS, LIGHTING ECT.
The face like I said was done in Z BRUSH...FROM MY OWN IMAGINATION...
ALMOST LIKE SCULPTING WITH CLAY.....LOVE IT..:)

Hi Guagua
Concerning color - start with a limited palette - one color - create all the values from light to dark with that one color in your painting. After you get used to working with full range of one color - try two! :)
I would recommend experimenting with yellow and purple to start with. Blend them, mix them together to get a full range of golds.
I will post you a couple of books and a site that will help you with color theory on your personal anatomy thread shortly.
And by the way - thank you very much for that link - really appreciate it. Haven't had a chance to check it out but will shortly.

Glenn,

Great progress so far! :)

Regarding your earlier question ~ here is a little demo of what Blending Modes look like in Photoshop:

You can toggle through all of the different preset Blending Modes in the Layers Pallette in PS ~ each different blending mode affects how one layer blends with the one beneath it, as demonstrated below:

Refining colors and facial features etc. Sticking as close to the traditional method of painting on this one as I can and a computer allows for. Manually eye-balling and picking colors, thick oil brushes etc. Just plain old fashioned direct-painting method. Figure this will be the only method enabling me to get something even similar to the original.
Long ways to go yet!

Great work on that portrait Glenn. I'm liking the strokes on the face.

Ok this is a bit of a random suggestion.. for a bit of fun. You could draw out a square polygon in z-brush. goto texture and load in your rembrant as a texture for the square. Subdivide it.. and then use z-brush to add a little depth to fake impasto... then just move around the lights. .. and see what looks good.

For Siju:

Just a quick demo of the power of simple complimentary colors. The principle is the power or impact is most effective when there is a 90:10 ratio. Example: a small dot of red in a field of green. Or visa versa. This ratio will give you the strongest effect of complimentary colors. For your painting I used purple in shadow areas and its complimentary yellow in lighted areas. Simple four color scheme of compimentary colors: green/red yellow/purple. Just thought it might come in handy for your future paintings done from your imagination. You end up getting golds and oranges and all kinds of other secondary colors when you combine these four complimentary colors.

Another Z BRUSH.....PAINTER #9 hand study.Created from my own imagination...no references used. Concentrating on the thumb joint mostly.
Hey
I have a question:
When I am in the 3d mode, I can't figure out how to use the other brushes without losing the 3d capability of spinning it around....
If you have time could you do a little step by step on how to use the other brushes and keep the 3d going at the same time?
Probably something simple...I just can't figure it out.
Thanks.

Thomasphoenix

Glenn,
you cant use the painting brushes in the 3d (edit mode) to use it , you have to project the brush strokes or color onto the model.Look for the tab called projection master.
press projection master tab(shortcut key "G") and itll give a pop-up menu , you check color, deformations , and click on tab called drop now.

Now a flat version of your 3d tool (model) (in whatever view you left it in the view port)is created and you proceed to paint then when you are done with this view ,You click projection master tab again and click on pickup now tab. and the painting you did will become converted to geometry deformation on you 3d model. Now turn it around to the other side which doesnt have textures painted and again drop it in projection master and then pick that up too.

Try this if you run into doubts pm me

For Siju

Quick painting demo for you as requested. Painter 9

#! Your drawing

#2 Used colored spotlights to get direction of lighting on figures

#3 Blended colors from spotlights - large soft blender brush - creating atmosphere - bringing spotlight colors into figures - creating unity with background - gives the painting a oneness

#4 Adjust contrast, color saturation, and apply more spotlights, and continue blending background into figures. End of underpainting phase.

#5 (Which is the big one) Starting the finished painting phase. In this phase I'm just searching for colors. Shadows, lights and atmosphere are already in place. Now it is just a matter of eyeballing proper colors, details, and painting with vigorous brushstrokes. Using large tinting brush for figures and background colors. And large soft blender brush only where necessary.

Siju, the key to this atmospheric effect is to bring some of the background color into the figures with a soft blender brush. This gives you the air and unity in the painting creating a oneness.

Hope this helps. If you have any questions you know how to reach me.

I'm just wondering is it deliberate that you keep you sculptures so faceted?

are you aware that you can subdivide the faces' - adding more/softer "digital clay" to work with - by pressing Ctrl + d.

I'm really enjoying you Zbrush work.. but you could take it to a higher level my adding more subdivisions and there by allowing more detail.. I'm just thinking out loud here.:)

May 17, 2006 : (PAINTING LESSON REQUESTED BY SIJU)

Top Painting is Siju's
Bottom is my version of Siju's

For Siju
I think you are doing a great job on your painting. When it comes to creating and not imitating, color is strictly a personal expression. It can evoke emotions and should express the emotions of the artist doing the creating. Color can be used realistically to get a photographic look of what is perceived as reality, or it can be expressive. I prefer the expressive approach myself. So here is an example of my version of the same painting.
The way I got to this color scheme is
#1 Adjust colors, slide bar all the way to the right
#2 Apply lighting - used golden spotlight and blue spotlight - aimed blue spotlight at boxers head - the one throwing the punch. Makes it a little green. Which is the compliment of the red now in the painting. The eye will go there first then travel to the spotlighted shoulder of the boxer receiving the punch. Path of action established with color. Also darkened the bottom of the painting in the spotlight process. Further emphasizing the action of the punch. Which is the essential element in the painting. Want to keep the attention on that action. Trunks of boxers in shadow so as not to be a distraction.
#3 Hit with more spotlights - just yellow this time
#4 Adjusted brightness and contrast, making colors more intense to add to the drama and creating deeper shadows to create the mood and further emphasize the action.
Last steps - a little purple in trunks and gloves to compliment the yellows. Put in the edge of the boxing ring. Keeps the viewer in the painting and connects the boxers further. Added a little highlight here and there to give it a glisten.

Working with Mr Mu on his Challenge Painting...(MR MU'S on top,MY EXPERIMENT on bottom)

Woke up this morning, looked at your painting and was liking it alot. Started playing with it once more; went to apply surface texture, and tinted it with that peach color upper left corner of color chart.

Then I got stuck in warp - LOL - and this is what I ended up with.

Thought you might get a smile on your face when you saw it. Read you were getting frantic....Hope my version gives you some food for thought on your journey. You never know.

PAINTER 9

Go to top of screen, select: LAYERS.
Menu comes up, bottom of menu select: DYNAMIC PLUG INS
Menu comes up select: LIQUID METAL
Menu comes up select: BOX WITH CIRCLE IN IT
This gives you SPHERES
Bottom slider: REFRACTION, controls transparency
The further it is moved to the right, the more transparent the sphere becomes
Top Slider: AMOUNT, controls reflection etc.
Play with all the sliders to get a feel for them.

After you get the sphere to your liking, PRESS OK

Then go to EFFECTS on top of screen
Click on EFFECTS
Menu comes up select: SURFACE CONTROL

Really starting to enjoy Sorolla's painting. It has some really beautiful color harmonies going on in it. Great composition , atmosphere and lighting. Found the unifying color to be a silver/gray. Runs throughout the painting. So I threw one silver/gray tint on to it. United all the colors. Still searching for colors and refining details as I go along. One layer, straight painting. Oil Brush. Hi......Guagua ...THANKS ...:) I am still trying to figure this program out...a lot of unsolved
mysteries left for me to figure out.

My main question right now, is....HOW DO I GET MY FIGURES AND FACES BACK INTO 3D...

I have been doing all these figures and faces in one session ....when I save them, and shut the
program off ...well that's it for that figure or face....can't get it back into 3D,where I can spin it around to refine it further, which is something I would really like to do,.....so I end up starting a new piece every
time, instead of refineing in 3D mode.. the one that I would still like to be working on.

Anyone out there with the answer and solution to this problem... S.O.S ....HELP :banghead:

hi, Glenn.what format were you save your work every time? i guess you just save the document? zbrush has its unique optimize, only one model active as 3d each time, the others you dragged out before dropped into the canvas,so it maximum save your system resourse, and that is the reason why it can handle millions polygon the other 3d program can not.
if you didn't save your model, you can not go back to it and refine it.every time when you satisfy with the rough model, in edit mode, select Tool--->save as,or use the hotkey "ctrl+shift+t",save it as *.ztl format.and when next time to reuse it,just press Tool-->load tool, drag it into canvas, press "t" button, return to edit mode, and you can refine it.
if my guess is right,i hope this may solve your problem.if you save document or export as jpg, psd, all those information drop into 2d,not 3d any more.

This is really fantastic work! I will have to study some of your workflows when I start experimenting with 2d cg sketches. This is an area I would like to improve in. As for zbrushing you may want to explore zspheres. This allows posing and joints to be seperated. It also prevents you from doing technical rigging and weight painting which generally isn't much fun.

I like the scene your starting too! As for zspheres they are kind of like a way of of box modeling in zbrush. They also have bones in the spheres which will help with posing. I haven't quite got a handle on them, but they seem easier than learning rigging. Rigging can get pretty hard for human like characters. Its actually the skinning process that's tricky but it falls under rigging. This is where you bind the mesh to the rig skeleton.

The feet look awesome! Your heads still need some work though, in the eye area and the lumpiness. You can take of the second by using smooth selectively. The shortcut key is shift+LMB I think. Here is a link to a technique which will speed up your workflow I think. http://206.145.80.239/zbc/showthread.php?t=034688

I would use mouse averaging though to use the technique. I think that is under the stroke tab at the top of the screen. Another technique for adding bumps and craters is this from Zippzopp technique. He uses stencils. I have up to this point used Projection master to do this same effect, but using stencils it seems you can add bumps in real time!

Man - missed a couple of updates. Everything looks fantastic - painting is coming along excellently and I especially love the zbrush feet - really look like Michelangelo's studies. What I like most about them is that you can see to which poses they belong - one of them looks the front foot of someone that is running, the other looks like the back a the back foot of someone walking and you've shown how much weight each foot carries excellently. Mucho thanx for posting - informative and inspirational stuff

Never ever.

Hi Siju

Think you are doing a great job on those stomach muscles. Both figures look painted to me, not just drawn and then colored in. I think you have basically achieved your goal of getting away from lines and actually painting direct with color in an atmospheric method. Can only get better and better from this point on as you become more accustomed to using vigorous brush work that's full of energy just like your lines. Just throwing a couple more color options your way. Might come in handy down the road, you never know.

Great painting job, SIJU !

#1: Siju's latest version of Hudson's painting

#2: I adjusted colors, saturation, value in Painter 9
effects/tonal control/adjust colors

#3: In the 'adjust color' section, desaturated, changed hue,
and also adjusted brightness and contrast.
Brushed in some off-white highlight color on back shoulder
of striking boxer and chest and arm of stricken boxer.

#4: Under effects, selected surface control/apply surface textures.
Tinted entire painting with a light silver gray, then again with
a light purple. Both tints used to mellow out the hot bright colors
and give a cool area for the eye to rest on:
Which is the BOXERS.

Hello Womball !!
You said it would be OK to help you with your 3D figure, So - I did.
Played with it this morning - I hope you don't mind.

Corrected some errors - think it will be easier for you to correct them at this stage of the game and then fine tune them in Zbrush as you were planning - maybe.
I don't know that much about 3D. But am hoping to learn with help from people like you.

The main thing is to notice that all the outside curves are there and in the right places. Also a neat trick on the back muscles is to make an "M" shape like I have done. All the muscles will fall into place in and around that "M" shape. And you want to have a "butterfly" shape for the buttock's muscles. Just like the upper and lower wings of a butterfly - the bottom one being bigger. Two muscles for the buttocks. For the side view I just sucked in his gut a little - gave him his shoulder muscle - and the outside edge of the butterfly wings for the buttocks.
Also study the collar bones and how the muscles connect to them and where they start and end. They are not a straight line - but a complex curved bone.
Hope this is of some help to you.

Just trying to pay you back a little bit for helping me.

Looking forward to seeing your progress on this figure.
Keep posting !

Take care Glenn

I bought the Hogarth Dynamic Anatomy book and Joseph Sheppard's Realistic Figure Drawing. They kind of play off of one another. Hogarth has a very good understanding of the anatomy, yet his women look very masculine and muscular. His men are also a bit too bulbous muscular wise and the noses are really big. This is just my inital impression. I like Sheppard's drawing style more, it seems more accurate to me. However he doesn't break down the anatomy as nicely. So if I can play off the strengths of both I might be able to develop an intersesting drawing style. I also bought my first anatomical muscular chart.

Btw I just saw this thread over at Zbrushcentral. Not the strongest modelling, but is kind of inspiring. The modeling isn't intimidating and the zsphere structures are simple. I think this will give you an idea of how to appropach zbrush in a more traditional modelling style. The guy does seem to have a strong drawing background though, which might be usefull for you.

Abyssis: Thank you for the kind words and for the visit. Much appreciated.

Womball/Nathan: What can I say execept "Thank You!" The links you have given me are great. And will help me more than you can imagine. When it comes to Hogarth, pay more attention to the principles of anatomy that he teaches rather than his style. And you can't go wrong.

FateBringer: Thanks for stopping by and the kind words. ANd of course you can use that "M" trick that I posted for the back muscle group. It is not mine. I learned it from Burne Hogarth and he learned it from Michaelangelo and he learned it from some one before him. Good tricks that work always get passed along. Hope it makes your job easier like it does mine.

I think the proportions helped out the most! Always room for fine-tuning. There is a script called zsketch I just downloaded. I hear it may be more fun than drawing with pencil, not positive though. Have to check it out first. One thing computers can do, which is tricky in drawing is absolute erasure of line. I tend to smear the line. I guess I need to learn the dow stick method of keeping the hand off the paper.

You should definetly check out Sheppard's book. They clearly mark out opposing angels in muscles. And the drawings are beautiful. Still wish they covered the muscles as in depth as in Hogarth's, but that's why I have both! I need to get the Hogarth book on clothing. That's an area I know nothing about.

Hi...Womball // Nathan...THANKS FOR THE INFORMATION....Will have to check him out...let me know what you find out about that Zsrcipt thing that you just mentioned...sounds interesting.
To keep from smudging your drawings,...lay a clean piece of paper over the areas that you have already finished, and rest your hand on that, instead of the surface you are drawing on.
Think you will really like DYNAMIC WRINKLES and DRAPERY by BURNE HOGARTH....GREAT BOOK...REFER TO IT A LOT MYSELF...whenever I am having a problem with cloth..folds ect.
Has everything you will ever need to know about cloth in there...from a to z....

That is such an ambitious piece, lovely capture of the life and energy already. The hat looks perfect in the middle shot, and interesting to see how many colours go into that on the tight shot -- definately giving the impression of 'hat' and then having another layer as well.

Really interesting to see your ZB work! I have been starting to take it more seriously as a concept tool, and usually doing my base mesh box modelled (just far more comfortable layout stage for me) -- very cool to see another approach used across a range of models.

This is a really cool piece! my big crit is that it has too many flat areas of color and not many transistions. I think you could blend the colors more and add another layer of color. Than blend this. I think it will look really polished than and resemble a classical painting. However I haven't done anything like this in 2d cg, so I could be just talking randomly. :-)

Hi....Womball.....Thanks for the feedback...
I don't want to push it further, no blending used on this painting,...just brushstrokes of pure color, ... I have a bad habit of pushing paintings to far...kills the freshness and is not really necessary...learning to leave well enough alone is the most
valuble lesson a painter can learn...:)

That corner head looks really interesting, it would be quite cool to see a row of these busts, such as you see in a museum, lined up on shelves. Are you still updating the evaluation with newly requested keys (what a great strategy by the marketing dpt. of ZBrush... you need quite a bit of time to get accustomed to their tool)?

HEY MR MU : Thanks !
What are these new Zbrush functions you just mentioned. I haven't heard any thing about them yet... Maybe you can clue me in when you have a spare moment...:)

Cyanid : Thanks for stopping by. I am glad that you liked that smaller head. It was one of those happy accidents that happens while experimenting with colors and lighting. The colors in that smaller head would not be possible without the brighter orange, yellow and red being there first. And probably it wouldn't look the same without those bright colors next to it. It was an experiment in hot and cold complimentary colors and how they can compliment and enhance each other when used in the right amounts and placed next to each other. It is the 10 to 1 ratio of complimentary color that I described further back on this thread while working with SIJU on his boxing painting.
The way it works is if you put a small green dot in the middle of a big area of red or vice versa in a 10 to 1 ratio you will get the fullest effect of complimentary colors. It is a principle used alot in op-art (optical-art). I learned it many years ago in color theory class. Some colors vibrate and enhance each other when placed next to each other. The same principle can be applied to any kind of painting that you paint. And can be very effective when the colors' values are modified from a pure color to a diluted shade of that color.
You just never know until you dare to experiment.
Take Care Glenn

About your question concerning my use of color....had to sleep on that one awhile, and try to
remember the reasons why they are the way they are.
I think it has a lot to do with the fact that my father raised and bred exotic birds, his whole life, and I also followed in that same path....breeding them, in such a way as to
CREAT NEW COLORS...matching up pairs that have colors that are great.. with each other..., and
watching their offspring come out with colors that are better than the parents.
MAGIC HYBREDS OF COLOR ...:)
I mostly try to put into my paintings , colors, and combinations of colors that I see in birds.

WOW! Everything is still looking very nice :) It seems like I missed a lot;)

I really like this one:

Maybe the girl is a litle bit too red... or the background. I would suggest you not to do the character and the background in the same colors ... I personally do not prefer this just my opinion ;)

Your 3D work is very nice, too. I think you can work a little more on your noses. They seem not completely perfect to me ;)

Keep at it!

Thanks TRUNKS - Glad you enjoyed my sun fairy !!

BNN: Thank you very much for the kind words and encouragement. Hope you have good luck with the Zbrush demo you just downloaded.

This morning I experimented with lighting and color on the Zbrush face I created yesterday.

Hey Glenn

Really liking the Z-brush stuff. Head number looks great, might want to add a few more darks (depending on the ref image of course). Keep up the awesome work,

Hey Glenn

awesome man - love this last head. You've managed to capture the likeness flawlessly, and the highly saturated colours work very well for you. can't wait to see some more heads from you - maybe also one or two studies in z-brush?

ciao man, keep us upadted.

Thomas Phoenix / Siju: Wow - Glad you stopped by. Really glad you liked that golden lady. Makes me feel like going on.:)

Abyssis : Thanks and I think that Zbrush head looks fantastic! Going to have to study it a little more to figure out how you did it! LOL

Demented: Thank you. Will try to do some more Zbrush but keep getting side-stepped by these heads.

BNN: Thanks. Am glad that you are doing these head studies. Great way to practice and develop your technique. Will have to help each other out when it comes to Zbrush I think.

FateBringer: Thank You. Glad you are enjoying my thread.

Glenn,

Great to see your work for the 50 Portraits thread! You're more than welcome to post these to the main thread, I changed the rule regarding posting 5 heads at one time and changed it to 1, since I was afraid otherwise we'd not get many posts :D ~ looking forward to your participation in the main thread! :) Keep up the inspiring work. :)

Cheers,

VERY VERY STRONG FOCUS!

The face of the lady practically pops out whenever I SEE IT!

Simple strokes yet it brings out so much!

Great work Glenn!!!

Hey Glenn,

I really like your "sculpture-into-painting"-studies, great results...Especially the last one is amazing, I admire the loose feeling of it and that you manage to catch it with just a few well placed strokes:thumbsup: !

Have a nice day!

Hey Glenn

ooo - this last one is very strong - like that you are taking a different approach, not just copying the work but also "processing" it. colours are, as always with you, fantastic. Like that you've scaled down a tad on the saturation, seems to work better like that with this one. Are you using photoshop or painter? - I ask because I also want this strong brushwork in my stuff but I can't seem to get it right with PS.

Awesome to have you posting these - really inspirational stuff man!
ciao

Great series so far. Real breadth of style that's impressive. The bright lady's head leaps off the page, but theres also something very likeable about the soft version of 71 -- great stuff :D

Rebecca.....THANK YOU....Will do, and thanks for the encouragment....

BNN ...THANKS ...Expressionism is a great style. Allows the painters emotions to surface thru brushwork,..one of my favorite styles of painting.:)

Thanks....daWinky.....Never tried to turn sculpture into painting before. A lot of fun so far, and a lot of room for experimenting, and playing.:)

Demented...THANK YOU...New form of experimenting for me...GREAT FUN. In answer to your question about which program I use...I use PAINTER #9....never have touched PS...Still exploring PAINTER.:scream:

THANKS.....Karry....Kind of partial to that dark one myself. Was trying for something where the viewers imagination could have room to relax, and imagine, on the journy over and thru space.:)

Guess I'm a glutton for punishment. Started this one last night.

Hey Glenn

Awesome work - really like this style - you seem to liberate the form from the space, pulling them out of the canvas - fascinating to watch your progress shot. really liking your gluttonous attitude - may be more work for you, but so much bigger a plaesure for me to come here!

thanx for posting, think'll go do some copying now.
cheers!
