THANKS Nitin...:) Those are only suggestions that I thought might be useful to you.
Everybody has their own methods and ideas about how to best learn anatomy.
The methods I suggested were used by Da Vinci and other GREAT MASTERS, so I figure if they were good enough for him and them, they should still apply in the present..:) Inspite of all of this great new technology, some things never change, like the basics of learning anatomy properly with tried and proven methods.:)
Really appreceate the feedack Nitin...ALWAYS welcomed......

More work done on this sculpture this morning.
I was remembering some ancent sculptures from China that I saw in a book years ago.
They were carved from roots that had grown through and around stone, and had actually consumed most of the stone over time..Not sure of the spelling here, but... likens... grew on the stone..thats what those orange spots reminded me of.

The persistance of life to overcome all obstacles, even stone..BONSI...:)

From imagination, no references other than my own memory used.

Decided to go a little further with this piece....I exported the last version posted above, and the third one up, posted above to Painter #10, and composited them/overlapped them in Painter #10 layers section..I wanted to see if I could get the carving to look more like polished oak which has a different color and tighter more dense hardwood grain than the orange brown that i've been going with all along, which looks more like polished soft pine.
I think I got the hardwood polished oak look in the bottom one posted below.
The top one posted below still reminds me of pine,.maybe even walnut, cherry or maple but in a less polished state.

I learned alot of new things concerning Z Brush from this wood carving study, like how to combine different materials found in Z BRush and composite them in Painter #10 to get the specific type of wood and grain that i'm after...
Always great to learn new things while pushing further, experimenting and exploring..:)

HEY...THANKS Aggie..:)
About Z Brush,...You ought to give it a try....You can download a free 30 day trial version, and then renew the trial version a few times also..and it's FREE..:bounce:
There are a lot of great tutorials at Z Brush central, that will really help you out in figuring out the program, and will make your learning journy alot easier, if you decide to go ahead and get the program.

Get the free trial version, just to give yourself a little taste of the program. That's what I did when I first got the program.
I had a hard time learning it, and still am, but not as bad as at first...I think the reason was just a simple..the older you are, the harder it is to learn a new language kind of thing..:D
The new version is geared more toward the artist and the creative process, alot more so than the earliar version, and is alot more easir to understand,...the language is just alot simpler.
The new version is even merging the painting aspect of art, along with the sculpting aspect which the earlier version was more geared to...which is GREAT , because the two aspects,..painting and sculpture complement each other and enhance each other.
Being able to learn and explore painting and sculpture in one program is the best way to go, and is also the best metod to learn how to create art. Z Brush is the only program that I know of, that fully allows for this sort of combination of sculpting and painting all in one program.
I think you will have a ball with it, once you get the hang of it...just like anything else learned, it takes practice is all..:)
THANKS for the visit Aggie and the feedback...Not many of the original crew left in this forum, so it's always a pleasure to hear from one while on this learning journy.. :)

Spirit - I was wondering about that. I guess everyone is doing alright and busy. I miss the forum and the workshops but I just simply haven't had the time to do it. I will be finishing my master's degree this semester and hopefully begin my doctorate in the spring. It has taken me 18 months to complete the master's program. This is why you have not heard from me in a while.

I have been drawing. Most of it, nearly 98%, has been traditional pencil. I got a new computer so I want to get something like a 3D sculpting software (Z-brush). I can doodle in between assignments. Oh and with the crying in the background I am reminded, I have a new baby boy. He is three months old. Something to think about for someone who is 38 wanting a baby. It is not as easy as it was ten years ago with my first son. But I would not trade it for the world.

Well, if I can get my gesture drawings scanned in, I will post them on my new thread... which the old one got terminated due to not being used in a year (LOL). I hope to be a little more active in the next few months.

Later Spirit.

HEY,..What are you mastering in, you might have mentioned it sometime back, but my memory isn't what it used to be ..LOL...a NEW son hey..:applause: ...I just became a grandfather for the first time a couple of monts ago myself..Time seems to fly by at the speed of sound lately,..seems like to me that it goes faster with each passing year...Kind of frightening at times to think about it..LOL...I just remind myself that a second can seem to be like an eternity at times, and eternity can seem like it goes by in a second at times
Reminds me of that song by Paul Simon..Slip Sliding Away..:D

With the Z Brush program,..the more RAM you have with your computer, the smoother and faster things will go..I was amazed at how much faster and smoother when I got more ram installed awhile back..big difference..:)
I use a wacom tablet and pressure sensitive pen that goes with it...I just have the small tablet...fits nicely on my lap, so I can sit up straight in my chair and not get a sore neck and back while working at the computer.
Nice hearing about what you've been up to lately Aggie..and best of luck to you and yours, and also with your school..

I am getting a master's degree in geospatial surveying engineering. And I will get my PhD in either Geospatial Sciences with an emphasis in land administration or early American History with a minor in early Latin American History.

I got a new laptop. It is a Dell M6400. It has the math coprocessor to handle this. I will try my tablet. It isn't a wacom but I think it will work.

I think I will try something quick to see how it works.

Added some motion to this still life composition that I started the other day. Using an S curve for the flow and motion of the wine. Placed the fluid wine on a diaginal projection on the picture plane, to go with the diaginal created by the woman and vase, to enhance and create a sense of motion which leads back into the main focal point which is the mans head...workup to this composition study posted on the previous page in this sketchbook thread.

THANKS Nitin..It sounds like you found the class room tutorial section over at Z Brush Central...which explains and demontrates this new Zsphere sketching method...:)
I have just been using what is taught in the tutorial on Zsphere sketching...It's new to me and everyone else at this point in time, so it should be interesting to see how this new method of creating developes...Like all art, I believe that it is important to stay isolated, and to develope in my own way, so as to be and stay unique in style and method...I am a firm believer in Darwins theory of evolution, and that isolation is the key to what creates diversity of style, concerning art in this case.
Homoginization of an art form is always a thing to be avoided,...It leads to a point where no ones work is distinguishable from anyone elses, and everthing created starts to look the same in style...This was true in the evolution of painting, and is a trap that can also become true in the evolution of digital 3D, if it is not taken notice of.
Having said that, ....ENJOY learning this new ZSPHERE SKETCHING TECHNOLOGY,....It affords an opportunity to carve out ones own path and style, like no other technology out there that I know of at the present time..:)....DARE TO BE DIFFERENT.. It's what keeps art ALIVE AND EVOLVING...:)
Those XRAY/ZRAY figures are just snapshots exported out of Z Brush into Painter #10, and then imported back into Z Brush for further experimentation and exploration of this new Zsphere Sketching technology...I'm not an animator, so i'm not constrainted by it's limitatations in the creative process...which gives me the freedom to explore in ways with this new technology that an animator would not usually explore, being that our goals are totally different...:)
THANKS for the feedback Nitin..ALWAYS welcomed, and very much appreceated...and i'm really looking forward to seeing what you create using the new Zsphere sketching technology..

Wow, it's nice seeing you go pushing forward just as technology does that. Having more freedom with the new tools, eh? I like the figure done on the 28th, you could add your fantastical 2d touch to it, to really give it the magical feel your pieces have. Always a pleasure to stop by. I'm just out of words when I come here :)

Some ...GREAT words that I stumbled upon while browsing over at Z Brush Central
Posted by a Z Brush Central member called ..Prosthesis

I just put them in my sketchbook, so I would always know where they are at, and will always be able to find them when needed..as in the never ending debate between the pros and cons of digital versus traditional.:)

Regarding Digital Art.

"So let me get this straight. I no longer need to watch paint dry. No more toxic chemicals or ruined clothing by a rogue globule of Alizarin Crimson? Nor be punished for experimentation by ruining my work? I can take forms and colors and patterns and rearrange them at will upon my canvas. Easily upload and have my work seen by a vast global audience? BASICALLY, I can take what ever I can imagine and make it manifest?"

"Yes, but you'll be shunned by the "Artistic World"

"Cool, Where do I sign?"

LoL that made me laugh!

But whoever wrote this is making a good point!
I recently saw a documentary on contemporary art, how that whole business (that's what it is) is run by a couple of billionaires who determine the prices for contemporary art in order to make profit from it, and what the economic crisis meant for it. It nearly made me puke. What do these billionaires think? They can determine for us what is good art and what isn't?
NOT!

Both your observations are worth learning - regarding digital media and art market. It's sad but in our world inevitable that even what is "good art" is guided by business. With internet we got a chance to get to people without the market, but even here there are trends set by people who make the biggest money on the market.

A question from 3D nooob ;) Regarding the shiny knight on a horse. Are the reflections on the figures mirrored by the program basing in their shape or you have to state in every place what should be mirrored?
ZBrush seems to be fun looking at your thread, I need to try it one dayy.

Johan...Sirielle

I don't want to get into the politics of MONEY and ART.Lets just say that YES, the MEDICI is still alive and well,..and is also still calling all of the shots in the world of the artist, and art,.. and that the art and the artist,..for better or for worse is still captive to their every whim...along with the general public which they rule, for better, or for worse...Some things never change, the nature of POWER being one of those things...:)

Hi Serielle...about the question you asked...That shinyness is a standard material in Z Brush..I just push it around with a couple of the Z Brush brushes.....the smear and bump brushes....You should deffenitly try the Z Brush program out..AMAZING program...You can get a free trial version for thirty days, and can also renew the trial version a few times, for free...:)
THANKS for the feedback and visit guys...Much appreceated, and always welcomed...:)

"Yes, but you'll be shunned by the "Artistic World"

I would like to add, though, that as far as I know from a few articles on digital art in todays art business, this behaviour is part of the past already.

Digital art and digital artists have long since begun to invade galleries and museums. Techniques range from complete-from-scratch creation of images to alienating carefully taken photographs (printed on very high quality paper with special technology or even exposed in the classical style).

Also, to be able to still sell "originals" some artists work on the canvas they printed their art on, with bleachers or textural materials.

The excerpt you quoted is, I would guess, not true anymore for the professional/business world where it rather has become one world of art regardless of where it came from.

My guess is that it's rather the purist amateurs who would claim everything digital to be of minor quality.

Mr MU...It seems to me that from the begginning the people in this forum were expressly encouraged to go the traditional route, due to the fact that art schools won't accept digital portfolios for students wanting to pursue an art career, with the exception of a small handfull of progressive thinking art schools.
So does this fact mean that the majority of art schools are run and controlled by amateurs, which would seem to be the case according to your last statement posted above, or is it that they are just trying to hang on to ther positions of knowing traditional, and not knowing digital....Most likely the latter I would guess.:)
In ether case, I think it is good to be good at both digital and traditional, and that one should not exclude the other, especally in art schools and the systems that control and run them..Denying the future has always been the downfall of any system...Well intended or not.denial is still denial, no matter how well it is justified, and should never be encouraged by condoning it .:)

the majority of art schools are run and controlled by amateurs

You're on to something, there...:D

But seriously, though, I never realized that art schools deny digital art in their portfolios. It might depend on the course/degree you are aiming at. I mean, classical illustration courses, animation schools... this kind of stuff. Do they require you to ban digital art from your portfolios?

That would be really... well, just ignorant, really.

When it comes to learning, though, I must say that I felt my conception of drawing principles really only set in with the classical pencil/paper tools. I don't know - it might be a tactile thing. In german we have a word for a thorough form of understanding (begreifen) and the root of this word describes the act of reaching out and taking something into the palm of your hand.

I never got to this level of understanding with the stylus and the screen. But I surely loved to apply what I learned again in the digital world.

I also find mixing media really exciting (in photography for example, you can edit a negative digitally, print it on a transparency and use that one for exposing classical photo paper...)

But, you know... my latest musical plan is to cover a baroque composer (Silvius Leopold Weiss, a german 17th century lute player) and play those songs with a resonator blues guitar to show the parallels between him and John Lee Hooker!

:scream:

Because I totally feel those parallels! I had a friend (not theoretically music savvy) listen to a few of my favourites by him (Silvius) and at one point she said: "Wow, he's got the blues!" - which really encouraged me.

After all - what is tradition now once was revolutionary, too! When oil colours superceded egg tempera, e.g.

Maybe, my daughter will laugh at such a clumsy tool like my pen/tablet combination when she is 35...:D
And, of course, pencils will still be around, then.

Ah. The joy of debating tools...:D

HEY MR MU, You posted and took my words and their meaning out of context..shame on you...LOL..:scream: By leaving out the beginning and end of that statement, you changed the whole meaning of what was said, and meant..
You will have to refer to Rebecca for more info about the no digital in the portfolio thing, I remember her telling students wanting to get into schools that they would have to have a traditional portfolio to do so...which is what sparked the debate of traditional v. digital to begin with, if I remember correctly.
By the time your daughter is 35, artist will probably have finger implants that will take the place of the pressure sensitive pens now available along with a holigraphic computer, and of couse phone implants to take the place of the keyboad...LOL.. Hopefully, I will be dead by then, and none of this conversation will matter..:D

Wait, what about painting directly from mind? Not necessarily 2D, it could turn into a whole scene with sound and smell, lets say an apple tree moving on wind. Whatever you think shows up in selected 3D "canvas" space in room. That would be interesting.

Thank you for ZBrush info, I'll definitely try demo as soon as I'll have more free space on HDD and perhaps better equipment (I guess it would work very slowly on my PC if would run at all, but I'll check specification).

Johan..Creative thinking and writing was a prereqisite for graduation in the school that I graduated from.NEW ENGLAND SCHOOL OF ART AND DESIGN. It was taught by the head of the school in a class called CREATIVE THINKING.
Hard to capture the vision, until you capture the thought behind it...writing the thought down first, is the best way to do that.
ART is alot more than fun to me, and money never enters into it.

hey Glenn whoohooo= you're going crazey with ZB3.5r2 I see :) I like the threatening angle of that Sacred Heart Sacrifice image - makes me think of Zeus :)

thnx for dropping by - to be quite honest I am not sure what you'd liek to use the grid for - it's basically there to immitate 3d packages where a grid is used to indicate where in 3d space the object is and thus show scale as well.. sometimes it's used as a guide to modeling and snapping... In Zbrush I can only see it as used to see the ground to be honest and maybe perspective indicator for the 2.5d works... other than that I have no idea heheh - it's all I could come up with ;)

THANKS Magdalea..:) .ZEUS hey...Puts a whole new twist on that sacrifice concept and on ZEUS. ..LOL:scream: ...I wonder if the AZTEC Nation ever heard of ZEUS, ..Probably not, but then again most myths are universal, if not conciously, then unconciously.
I need to read once again, THE POWER OF MYTH by Joseph Campbell...GREAT book and GREAT source of inspiration...:)
About the perspective,... I'll just have to keep doing it by eye, until I figure out the new system in Z Brush 3.5...Would be nice if I could figure a way to ceate a semi transparent perspective grid box in Z Brush with two walls,a ceiling, and also the floor...which is the way I learned how to do it in real life,... the old fashioned traditional way...where the perspective box is created first, and then the objects are projected in perspective into it, using the stationary perspective grid box to get the measurements right for the placement of the objects....Maybe they wll have something like what I just mentioned above in the Z Brush 4 progam when it comes out in a few months..would be great, and would also make things alot easier for me if they did...:)
THANKS AGAIN..Magdalena

MORE MORNING PRACTICE
Brought into Z Brush 3.5 some paintings that I did in the Open Figure Drawing Workshops which were created using the Painter program.
Going to build an architechural enviromemt around them,...will give me an oportunity to explore interior architechural perspective further while also further exploring the new Z Brush 3.5 Program...Plus I like the idea of being able to take earlier stuff that i've created, and taking it a step further by combining the Z Brush and the Painter Programs..

Start of a new Z Brush bust...Mesh provided by Mahlikus The Black..the two smaller heads at top in this post are the original mesh provided by him.
The idea is to take his mesh and to change and create something new from it..Thought I would create something old from it.:)
It's for a challange over at Z Brush Central..The idea is to try out all of the new brushs/tools in Z Brush 3.5, and to basically push what you already know further by exploring and experimenting.

I'm working from imagination so far on this.

Started poly painting this character..cool blue colors around the eyes, jaw and mouth area, ..warm red colors around the cheek bones, nose, and ears,...golden warm colors around the brow and forhead...subsurface blood temperature regions of the face..Kind of the same way that Rubens and other masters painted their underpaintings,..before applying golden thin transparent tints used to unify the face and the underlying colors.

HEY THERE MR MU...:wavey: THANKS..:) Actually, you must have been reading my thoughts about this dragon that i've been working on..I was thinking of a feathered serpent and started his beak but it doesn't show too much in the post of him,,I will show it better in the next post of him...I was thinking of giving him the same colors as my parrot and long time companion/PEPE which is my avatar..and having the red feathered scales on the top of his head ect....When you stop and think about it,feathers are just modified scales after all..;) I think I might be able to pull off the feathered/scaled effect with these new zbrushs/sculpting tools on this character...I want to make him fit into an AZTEC concept that's been floating around in my imagination for awhile now...HOPEFULLY this concept will jell now that I have the proper tools to work with...With time we'll see I guess..:D
THANKS for the feedback MR MU...You know it's ALWAYS a welcomed treat, and very much appreceated.:)

Worked on the design of the space in this piece.
Also my first try at the new quick sketch feature in Z Brush...Works great, you can design original complex designs like the carpet and table top ones in this latest post, and it's a really quick process ..AMAZING and FANTASTIC possibilities..:bounce:
Thanks for reminding me about that quick sketch feature Amrender,,now I have something else that's new to play with..:scream:

THANKS Amrinder.Hope I can return the gesture in the near future...:)

My second try at the new Z Brush quick sketch feature..The top one is the design I came up with to start with..took maybe 5 minutes..Like I said earlier...this new feature allows for a really quick process to creat original complex and elaborate designs..:)
This design reminded me of a Native American feathered Mandala or Dream Catcher,...So this morning on the bottom post, I started applying that thought to the original design..and worked a little on the outter ring/row of feathers...All done in Z Brush so far..

HEY..Aggie....Yep, she is the first model of the first workshop, and is in the first page of this sketchbook..I figured that I would create a nice new home for her to dwell in...:)
About your question,..I export in PSD format from Z Brush into Painter #10..then covert the piece to BMP while working on it in the Painter #10 program and exporting it back into Z Brush...where I can then put a new layer on it, and add more 3d stuff to it while in the Z Brush program ...Seems to work good for me doing it that way...I can get the best from each program, while traveling back and forth between the two programs, and in the end combine them into one piece....Z Brush/Painter #10 Combo.

HEY...Another one is here already..Tme sure seems to fly by at the speed of light as I get older.. :banghead: ....Anyway,....MERRY CHRISTMAS EVERYONE, and HOPE YOU ALL HAVE A PEACEFUL NEW YEAR...:bounce: :)

Speaking of printing out digital stuff. What do you print your stuff on, media and ink? I had a copy company print one of mine out on canvas, which I had framed for a friend of mine. The colors did not look the same as in Painter. Why do you think that is, the ink?

SpiritDreamer
02-04-2010, 12:34 AM
FEB. 03, 2010

:wavey: Hey Aggie..:) ....About your question of color in printing...Most of the time, it comes down to the printers knowlage of color and mixing it right....
I worked in a printing company here in Boston along time ago for a couple of years as a printiers apprentice..I couldn't take the fumes, so I gave it up...But anyway, the old timer on the big 6 color press was the only one who cold get certain colors like different shades of blue in particular to come out right and match the work that he was printing..The way he explaned it to me, was that it just takes years of practice to know exactly how much ink and what ratio of color combinations to mix up before it is spread on the rollers....
With this new technoigy, i'm not sure if that still applies, but most likely it still does...some things never change...like practice makes perfect, and perfection only comes with time of experiance..:) ...Might have to do with the colors on your computer screen matching those on the printer correctly...That's what printing proofs/samples are for.
I sent you a link to a good printing company..put it in your sketchbook thread..Give them a try next time you have something printed...I've been having them do my printing for a few years now, ..They do good work...and will answer any questions you have concerning the printing of your work...:)
