It's a great and one of a kind book for sure..I would be lost at times in createing figures from imagination without it.:)
I had him for a teacher many years ago,..in real life...He was an amazing teacher, and man...always had the class mesmerized..with his skill and stories..:)
THANKS for the visit Kris...MUCH APPRECEATED..:)

Experimenting
Took a 3d tool/male head that I created awhile back from a sphere, and put it onto the male figure in a relief sketh/sculpture that I created awhile back.
This is the first time that i've tried this combination of a 3d head merged into/onto a relief sculpture...Just trying to develope a technique that uses the tools i've created in Z Brush, and what i've learned in Z Brush so far, to create a convincing and pleasing to the eye image.
I kind of like the results of this latest experiment..It has a lot of potentual for doing quick sculptural sketches, and for further developement I think.
Created from imagination, no references used.

Hi SpiritDreamer!! :)
I like this last one very much, looks like a 3d life drawing or figure sketch to me. You are developing a different use of zbrush which not often seen. Now I am thinking to try this as well.

THANKS Nick..:) I really enjoy the feeling I get while doing relief sculpture sketches..it's alot more of a challenge and alot more difficult than full 3d sculpture sketches, in alot of ways. So when a piece comes out halfway decent, the reward is that much more greater for me.:)
It's even more fun trying to mix full 3d sculpture sketches with the relief sculpture sketches, which is something new for me to explore, experiment, and play with, which is always fun..and keeps the journy an adventure..:)
THANKS for the visit Nick..ALWAYS, and MUCH APRECEATED..:)

Awsome style and experimentation with Zbrush.
I would love them more if you can bring some colour or hue into the theme u r creating. Right now they are looking a bit monotonous from my persona views. But i think that wont be necessary if you r working on some anatomy studies only.

HEY...Amrut....THANKS... I still have lots and lots left to learn about and in Z Brush...I might master it in about 10 years at the rate i'm going..LOL:D ..but it's all fun, regardless of the time it takes...:D
THANKS Johan..I agree with your thought about the monochomatic reliefs...plus sometimes a good sketch can lose it's original power/strength/energy when it's refined further..:)
You have me seeing ancient Asian dragons in those clouds now..:D
I remember seeing a long ancient, about 10 feet long and a foot high, viewed from side to side, end to end..silk scroll laid out on a table in the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston..Had really nice dragons coming out of the clouds, and then vanishing back into them..Tons of atmosphere created with ink brushwork spreading out on the silk...Created about a thousand years before the West discoved atmosheric perspective..LOL.:)
THANKS Alice...Not sure if i'm going any further on that one at the moment...It's just a sketch that captured a passing thought before it escaped..:)

THANKS Alena...This Z Brush relief sketching technique that i'm experimenting with, is starting to feel more comfortable to me, with each figure that I do.Feels like a natural way to create a figure for me...Almost the same type of feeling that I get when creating figures using traditional conte crayon on a large pad of newsprint paper...but even better..:D So far i've only been using the clay tubes brush set to very large, and doing the whole figure with that one brush and large setting, without ajusting the setting size of the clay tubes brush as I work on the figure..kind of like ala prima style..one stroke overlapping the other in a building up volume and depth sort of fashion..Feels really comfortable to me, and for me, it is a great and quick way to do anatomy sketches and studies I think..:)
THANKS for the visit and feedback Alena...ALWAYS a welcomed pleasure to hear from you...:)

THANKS Kris :) I love to sculpt in real clay, just as I love to sculpt in digital clay..both of those ways of sculpting are GREAT in my opinion.
About doing my art for a living...I decided that decision many years ago, and have never regretted my decision..
The answer is NO
In making a living,I chose to do what was required, so that in the end which is now, I can do what I want..I'm retired from 40 years of hard labor, most of it as a TEAMSTERS UNION MEMBER, and now i'm doing what I want to do, which is CREATE ART..MY OWN OF COURSE.
If it sells, that's good, and if doen't sell, that's ok too, because i'm doing what I want to do,and not what somebody else want's me to do. When it comes to my art...What did he say in the end of the movie BRAVE HEART...If I recall properly, I think it was..FREEEEEEEDOM..:)
I have sold my art in the past, and continue to sell it in the present..I continue to put art above money, not money above art...I have worked too hard for others throughout my life to have it any other way:)
THANKS for the feedback Kris..ALWAYS welcomed, and very much apreceated :)

Hiya,
Very nice work on the stylize self portraits, Glen. :) I really like the last one with blue and the first one without the light. It has a nice bonze feel to it. The last one reminds me of something mythical. I piece that you would see on a temple in a fantasy or historical fantasy world. Well done! It is pretty atmospheric now, but maybe add a bit more highlights to it? Or even add a variety of lights, almost like little shining fairies flying about. Nice work.

Hey Glenn. Looking better man. I can see you're enjoying yourself! :) I did notice that he's looking a little "lumpy" and I think that's because perhaps you're working at too high of a subdivision sometimes. I like to do all my blocking at lower res and just build up from there. Only thing I really do at higher subdivs is cutting in wrinkles and fine details. Any kind of move, clay, inflate brush work I do is down at the 1.2.3 levels. Hope that helps!

THANK YOU Magdalena..:) I had to dust off Burne Hogarth's book..Dynamic Light and Shade to study the effects of expressive light on the figure..I ended up using a combination of Radiant light and Mystic light that he demonstrates and describes in that book for this Asian Dagon Self Portrait of mine, that you like and mentioned, which is now on the previous page of this thread. I always can count on his books and teachings for the answers to any of the questions that I can't answer myself..GREAT TEACHER, GREAT BOOKS..:)

THANKS Magdalena..Trying to instill in him the basic characteristics of an ancient Asian Dragon..the kind that i've seen on silk scrolls in the Museum of Fine Arts here in Boston where I live,..while at the same time trying to keep my own features alive in the self portrait.
My eye brows have actually gotten to the point in the last few years, to where they actually look like the ones in this self portrait.
It seems that the older I get, the more hair vanishes off the top of my head, and then emerges elsewhere..like growing out of my ears, nose, and eyebrows ect...Genetically minded predestination hair growth...LOL..:scream:

Been wanting to use this burled wood material on something, ever since I got it..Finally found something that it might work on.Rendering the skin first on the face makes a big difference...gives it a rough surface when using this burled wood material, as compared to the polished smooth wood look of the neck..nice contrast and combination I think.

I think I made it a bit better again, thanks to your, Rebecca's and Alena's help. I'll post it in my sb as soon as I get home and then I will have to paint like a madman to get something worth posting in the IFW thread (I used up 3 of my 4 images already, I think)

This exercise will give me a further chance to experiment, explore, and learn the Z Brush program, which is my goal....Pus the extra bonus of studying facial emotion and the muscles that create it, in sometimes subtle, and sometimes not so subtle ways..:)

Maybe you could arrange your opposites in an iconic composition? Like the one introduced in Phil Straub's tutorial.

HEY THANKS for the link MR MU, and for the visit of course.
ALWAYS welcomed and appreceated :)
I just feel that I can learn more important things about anotomy doing this exercise study of emotions and the muscles that express them, than I can from doing bunnies..Plus I enjoy the freedom in my thread of expressing an opinion without having my nose rubbed into it forever by an unforgiving sort of spirit, if you know what I mean.
My life and time left in it at this point, are too short for that sort of onesided nonsense.
I have done my best to be of help to others that I come into contact with, and will ALWAYS continue to do so. My record of that fact is in the record of my post in this thread, and in the threads of others that I have posted to, and it speaks for itself :)
But the days of workshops is over for me..THEY ARE NOT FREE, WHEN THEIR COST IS THE FREEDOM OF OBJECTION AND OPINION.

I've been studying some of the great classroom tutorials over at Z Brush Central this morning.
I'm going to see if I can apply some of what I learned to this practice study of emotions that i've been developing over the last few days.
My goal will be to turn the painted sculpture that i've been working on, into a fleshed out 3D painting, while staying in the Z Brush program and learning as much as I can on this one, before going into PAINTER #10 and doing compositing with different versions in layers in that program.
Starting out with a mid tone skin color,...will start to work it the way I would a regular painting..using the Z Brush program in this case, instead of Painter #10 which is the program that I usually paint with.

Hi Glenn, I don't have Zbrush, so I am curious...how does a 3D painting work? Will you be able to rotate it around? Would you paint in your own highlights and shadows, or would it get determined by the lighting in the software? Thanks and have fun!

THANKS John ..Z Brush is just another instrument/tool that will only allow a user to express what they are able to express with any other instrument/tool.but only in a quicker and more amazing way and ways.:) .The better a person can draw, paint, sculpt, while using traditional means, digital means such as Corel Painter or whatever,.the better and easier the work will be when using Z Brush.
Hi Wes ...In answer to your questions...I'm going for a Rubens painting look and approach to painting on these latest painting studies that I just started..I'm painting in the shades of colors and highlightes using thin colors as glases, where the underlying colors show/shine through, this creates a luninious effect...less intensity/opacity of colors used.
Im working/painting in the round on a 3D model.
In the Z Brush program, the model is lit by a spotlight which can be ajusted to creat different angles of, and lengths of real time shadows which will be cast off of the raised surface of the model...These shadows are different than the shading of color that i'm painting on the model. The combination of those two elements,..Painted shading/lighting of colors like what is done on a 2D painting and the real time shadows that the Z Brush program provides as the model is spun around, is what makes it a 3D painting.
I'm new at this painting technique in Z Brush, so there will be lots of trial and error, and learning as I go along....But in the end, I hope to end up with something that resembles a painting done in the manner of an old master technique while using this new Z Brush instrument/tool, and not a copy of a photo which is a totally different critter than a painting...not that there is anything wrong with copies of photos..I've done a few of them myself in the workshops, which are posted at the beginning of this sketchbook thread. A painting created purly from imagination, or even a painting created with the aid of a real life model, even if it is my own reflection in a mirror is just more rewarding for me in the end.:)
THANKS ALOT FOR THE FEEDBACK GUYS, AND THE VISIT,...very much appreceated..:)

Also just started to learn perspective and how to construct decent looking 3D columes, gables, archways, fancy molding ect while studying the tutorial by Sebastion Legrain in the Z Brush Central class room section...This part is going to be a tough learning adventure for me, alot to it.. ...but in the end, maybe I will be able to place my 3D figures in a decent and corect perspective and 3D DEEP SPACE..That's my hope anyway..:D

It's funny...
I actually started drawing and painting because I wanted to make a 3D short movie from scratch. I was playing and practicing modeling in Blender3D (awesome FREE 3D tool btw) and was very ignorant to the huge amount of work that is involved in 3D animation. The more I discovered, the more I realized that I knew nothing, absolutely nothing, about anything (texturing, lighting, rigging, script writing, storyboarding, and a zillion other things).
So a few years ago, I made the choice to drop the 3D until I got good at 2D, knowing it meant many years of hard work. (smartest thing I ever did)
I still have my old dream in the back of my mind... it will probably stay there for another 10, 15 years, but one day I will consider it time to start realising it...
And here I am now, encouraging others to go for it! LOL
You can paint, you have great understanding of form, light and color, you've got a script in your mind...
You've got a great start already, I'd say :)
You could see it as a personal longterm project ;)

MORNING PLAY
Just having some fun with this one, and letting my imagination lead the way..:D
All of the figures are created/sculpted from my imagination in the Z Brush program,..except the old guy sitting off in the distance. He was a small Da Vinci brush and ink sketch that I used as reference and turned into a 3D sculpture using the Z Brush program in a past open figure drawing work shop.
I also used a mirror for the three self portrait bust with horns that surround him..studying emotions and facial expressions while doing those.
Mostly trying to get used to creating perspective in Z Brush, and the placement of figures in it while doing this study exercise.
Lots of fun so far, and i'm learning something new with each move I make in it..A combination that can't be beat...:)

THANKS Bhaskar..:) That's a very good question..
Probably has alot to do with the fact that I didn't learn to read words until I was twelve years old. I spent my entire childhood looking at and studying the pictures, trying to figure out with my own imagination,... what they were all about and meant, while all the other kids were reading the words that told them what the pictures were all about and meant.
I guess that in forcing me to use my own imagination at an early age by not being able to read the words to the pictures I saw, I developed a unique visual vocabulary, and a unique way of expressing it...That's only a calulated guess though,..but I still find that I hardly ever read the words that describe what the pictures are about,..I find it much more entertaning and interesting to use my own imagination to figure out what they mean and are about..:)
THANKS for the visit, feedback, and for asking that question...It's a question that should be asked by every artist of themselves..:D

THANKS Kris..:) ST. George the dragon slayer...LOL :scream:
I told Mrs Spirit Dreamer/Jessica a few days ago when I had some green tints in that lion, that the image reminded me of St. George slaying a dragon that I have seen alot of times over the years while studying the Old Masters works..I can't remember the name of the artist who painted the image i'm thinking of, but it's a nice little painting..has the dragon pinned down under the horses foot/hove I think.
Anyway, it wasn't my intension to create that sort of image,..I like dragons too much to ever want to see one harmed...They are a symbol of WISDOM and the FORCE BEHIND LIFE..The LIFE FORCE ITSELF...In my book anyway..:)
I'm just trying to do a Rubens type hunting action scene/ drama painting..Lions in this case...I just left the horns on that guy in the picture, because I liked the way they curled back into the action part of the scene, aiming like little pointers at the center of action in that part of the painting...I'm always thinking about the composition, and how little things can have a great way of guiding the veiwers eye, without the viewer even knowing that his or her eye is being guided throughout the painting..:)
Anyway Kris..I really appreceate the visit, and of course the feedback, especally when it puts a big smile on my face..ALWAYS helpful, and very much welcomed.. :)

This is becoming quite an epic fight.
Nature and it's natural inhabitants fighting the polluting humans :D
The horse seems a lil stiff, not being pulled downward by the weight of the lion that is all around his neck... or is the lion still going upward in his jump? In that case, the horse could be making a protective move to the side away from the attacking lion, just like it's rider is doing.
Well, that was my first impression but now that I look at it a bit longer it doesn't seem to bother me that much anymore... LOL... I'm sure you know what you're doing and will ignore this if you think it's irrelevant ;)

THANKS for the feedback Johan...Your right about the stiffness.I worked on solving that problem this morning..still a ways to go yet...but not as stiff now as it was I think.
My thinking is that the lion has leaped at the horse, got his claws imbedded in the horses neck, and the horse then rears up, trying to stay away from the lions approaching bite to the wind pipe like they usually do to suffocate their prey, and in the process, lifting the lion up in the air as it does...and the rider is looking to see what has just taken place, jutting forward while trying to keep his ballance.
Feedback and visit ALWAYS appreceated and welcomed Johan...keeps me pushing it further...:)
