I just got a new computer ...maximum ram..better graphics..bigger screen,...and now I have a bigger headache trying to get everything working right with it.LOL :banghead: .So far i've only gotten painter #8 to work...Waiting for a response from Z BRUSH so I can reinstall that program, plus having a problem reinstalling Painter #9

HEY Johan THANKS...It's been one calamity after the other LOL
My original computer completely went out..nothing...thought it was the power supply or power switch, so ordered both of those parts...and then we decided on getting a new computer with more ram ect., so Jessica could have her own..the original, if the parts that she ordered fixed it....Anyway, the next day, I pressed the start up botton on the original computer, just for the hell of it, and the sucker started right up, like nothing had ever been wrong with it..and has been running right ever since.LOL...So now we have to send the parts ordered back, and I am going to end up buying Painter #10 ,..and still am waiting to hear back from Z BRUSH....I have my wacom hooked up to the new computer, so i'm still stuck with Painter #8, until I get #10 shortly, and hear from Z BRUSH...Jessica is getting a bigger headache than me, being that she is the brains when it comes to the computers and is the one doing all of the installing....I just paint and sculpt, and give her moral support as she conqures all of these technical problems., and try to stay out of her way as she's doing it..LOL:)
Anyway Johan, thank's for the visit, always welcomed and very much appeceated....Hopefully all of this stuff will get sorted out shortly, and I will be able to fall back into my daily routine , which gives me pleasure and which I really enjoy at this point in my life.:)

WOW!! New computer!!:bounce::bounce::bounce:
Glenn, regarding the ZBrush license, I guess you have to just deactivate the license in the old machine by pressing "Zplugin>License>Deactivate License" while connected to the internet so that the license returns to the server, and then activate the license in your new computer after connecting it to the internet. But make sure you still have the license number before deactivating in the first place! :D (I recently performed this drill and then realised I had lost the number, so I had to mail pixologic!!)

Hey Glenn, if you haven't actually ordered Painter X yet, I would advise just to wait a bit more to order it. I think somewhere in february or march 2009, Painter XI will arrive. And the Painter representative has told there would be much improvement done compared to Version X.
You can read about it in the Painter Wishlist thread (http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?goto=lastpost&t=208276)
Also some news on Painter XI in this thread (http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?f=112&t=678476) and here (http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?f=112&t=654548)
I am actually hoping my old computer here will survive until the next release of Painter, so I can totally compose a fitting pc for painting, avoiding hardware compatibility issues etc.

So in a way, you are in a comfortable position, with your wife fixing the hardware for you :)
My girlfriend is capable of electrocuting herself just by pushing the power button of our pc LOL, though she has many many other qualities I can only dream of to have

Also, Glenn, even if I don't post after every update you do here, I'm always here... seeing and enjoying each and every one of the updates!

Have a nice day!

Finally got my Z BRUSH 3 program installed into my new computer.
WOW :bounce: ..what a difference that extra ram makes...went from 526 mega bytes to 2 giga bytes...It was taking me like 20 minutes to place each flower before, and I had to shut off the little windows for each flower in the subtool section, before I could even move the flower that I was placeing, not to mention the vase..LOL..
Now I can spin, rotate and move the intire vase and all of the flowers at the same time as i'm placeing new flowers into the vase..Took all of 2 minutes for me to place the rose in the vase...which is making the whole process really enjoyable now..and great fun.
Wish I had gotten this new computer and more ram alot sooner, would have saved myself alot of frustration and headaches..Oh well...live and learn....:D

HEY Amrinder ..THANKS..:) A good way to create STUFF...Make a shape, and then let your imagination create STUFF from that shape.
Da Vinci used to see STUFF in the stains on a wall, and then create STUFF from what his imagination saw.
Michelangelo did the same thing by seeing STUFF in the shapes made by clouds, and then letting his imagination play with the shapes that he saw in the clouds.
The bug below was made by seeing shapes in the vase as I made it, while playing with the deformation settings in Z BRUSH...i JUST KEPT THOSE SHAPES ALIVE IN MY IMAGINATION, AND AFTER i MADE THE SHAPE OF THE VASE, i WENT BACK, USED THE VASE AND MADE THE BUG SHAPE THAT i SAW WHILE MAKING THE VASE.
The head of the bug was the bottom part of the vase, and the wings were the top part of the vase...then I just made the long back body part as a subtool, and the same for the legs that I just made..but it all started by seeing the basic shape of a bug in the shape of that vase...More of a DAMSAL FLY shape, their wings aim back when they land, while a dragon flys wings stick out sideways from it's body.
The flowers and their leaves were also done the same way...The fowers, pedals and all were the bottom of the vase at one time, and the leaves were the top of the vase..:)
Didn't mean to ramble, but you got me to thinking of how I create STUFF..LOL:)
THANKS for the feedback Amrinder..ALWAYS appreceated, and very much welcomed..:)

HEY...THANKS Chris..I would like a thicker rounder edge on the top part of the vase, along the very top edge of the vase, but still have that edge retain that scalloped look..will have to experiment with some of those sculpting brushes/tools to see if I can get a softer rounded , like a bead of glass look on that edge that i'm after..THANKS for the suggestion.ALWAYS helpful...I'm no expert at flower arangements ether..LOL...My dad hurt his back years ago while working, and resorted to making flower arangements with artifical flowers in nice vases, to make ends meet...He sold every one that he made..He had a good eye for it ...I used to watch him making them, so hopefully some of that natural gift he had for colors, and arranging those flowers rubbed off on me...Time will tell..LOL.

HEY THANKS Anand..Yap, i'm really starting to enjoy this new machine..no more long waits and freeze ups that really put a damper on whatever I went to do...Half the battle is won, with that extra ram, makes a huge difference in the outcome, and in my mood while working...LOL

Hi Glenn

A couple of years ago I bought this little application called ACDSee, which is a photo management tool. One thing I can do with it is create a slideshow or simply view a series of images after eachother. I did this with 17 renders of your flower arrangement (thanks for numbering them heh) and it's pretty interesting to see the composition evolve this way, image after image...

HEY..THANKS Johan.
I am just doing what Meats Meier talks about in his Introduction to Z BRUSH 3 DVD...Making a bunch of different versions, and using the 3D tools/elements that i've created, to create with,..then taking different versions with different lightings, and putting them in my Painter #10 PROGRAM ANND EXPERIMENTING WITH OVERLAPPING/OVERLAYING THE DIFFERENT VERSIONS IN THE LAYERS SECTION, which is what i just did this morning with these last two pieces posted..It's a great way to learn MORE, with what I have already created.
That slide show thing you talked about sounds interesting..Jessica made a few of them from my work when I first started doing digital.
They used up alot of computer memory if I remember right..I think that's why she stopped making them,..but they were fun to look at, just to see the process if nothing else.
I think that posting the process ,.one step at a time like I am doing, is easier to follow, for anyone interested..It's easier when a step can be studied in detail for more than just a second or two, which is what tends to happen with the moving slide shows..It's easier for me to absorb things while they are stationary rather than moving,.that much I do know.
Anyway Johan,..Thanks for the visit and feedback, ALWAYS a welcomed pleasure.

Johan...THANKS...I was going to wait for PAINTER #11 also, but Jessica went ahead and ordered #10..Seems like i've always been one step behind in that program, so I guess that it's going to stay that way for now anyway...I'll probably end up getting #11 about the time that #12 comes out..LOL

THANKS Tessa...Want to trade places ...It's 30 degrees here in Boston and windy which makes it feel like 10 degrees..I'm having to hunt for my themal underwear this morning, so I can go down to the store in a minute to get some dog food..LOL...It was nice enough to go fishing a couple of weeks ago, and the sky and water did look like that painting, but not anymore..for awhile anyway...WINTER HAS ARRIVED, that sky will soon be steely gray, and that water will be frozen solid, and i'll be hybernating along with all the other animals around here..the ones that still have sense enough to hybernate that is..LOL.

THANKS Anand ...I am tinkering with the thought of entering that new challange...Started a new figure just now to go with the concept I just thought of to go with the challange....The GOD VULCAN would be a good myth to go with steam I think...Tapping the energy created beneath volcanoes, which includes steam..Now to make it into a visual form using a myth...quite a challange, but might be a fun one, will have to dream on it some.

Well obviously a vulcano has a lot of steampower :)
Steampunk often refers to mechanical devices which are powered by steam, or seem to be.
Those devices are often built in brass or copper and there are usually lots of gear, rivets and bolts involved :)

I kinda like your idea though, it's very original to say the least. And not everything has to be taken literally all the time.
I just don't think the jury will like it, but I'm sure you pretty much don't care at all about that :)

what i like in this piece is the figure in the behind, that gives dept and something misterious to the whole composition.
The magma elements remember me of some glass-fired elemensìts, and it's really great!
About the God, I like the thing on his knee (forgive me, my english is awful ^_^). I don't like at all the spiral on his head, but since this is a WIP i wait for more :p

HEY..THANKS Alice..:) This may sound a little weird to some, but the image itself is not my goal in this paticular journy.. The goal for me, is to learn more about the Z Brush program than I do at present, and the image itself is secondary to that...Learning something new from each new piece/version is the real adventure for me, and is what makes and keeps the journy enjoyable for me also...If the image itself comes out ok, than that's ok,..but if I haven't learned something new while creating it, than that's not ok..It becomes just a repeat of things that I already know in a different image
form/or version, which after awhile, leads to and becomes and leaves a stale feeling in the images created, and in myself also..That's just my true and honest feelings at present about creating, after a long life of creating..:)
Really appreceate the visit and feedback Alice..ALWAYS WELCOMED..:)

How's going Mr. Glenn.

I'm travelling around your last posts and I see you still doing art like a crazy. You're a tru artist mate.

And you get ZBrush as you main tool, that's nice. I have some friends who love that software and surely I'll show your images to them...a different approach.

Anyway. I'll check your progress in that Contest. Hope you can finish it.

ps.: just one observation Gleen. Maybe you can rotate the feets in your figures. They look planted in the ground (normal position, rotation) and that don't add much to the sensation of freedom of your poses and composotions. Make them fly, man! : )

HEY THANKS Agnaldo :) Just having fun while trying to master Z Brush...It's kind of like how young kids can pick up and learn a new language in a short time,..but for us older folks, it's a real challenge to say the least..LOL..Our brains have adapted and evolved to what we learned when young, and it seems that change becomes harder the older one gets...But i'm giving it my best shot regardless..as long as it remains a pleasure that is..:D
I understand what you mean about the feet..nice observation. .Just lazy on my part..was wanting to capture the general dynamic of the gesture, before it slipped away...I will keep the feet in mind now that you have mentioned it..THANKS Agnaldo.:) and THANKS also for the visit and feedback,..REALLY appreceate it, welcomed anytime..:)

Mu is right, Giger could give you some really interesting ideas for the biomechanical body; I admire his work, really suggestive. He's the creator of Alien too, just to give you an idea.
Well... have fun with your immersion in Giger's world!! :)

hey Glenn,

hope you and your loved ones have had a good start into this new year.

I had to think about laptop sketching and I gotta say I found out there's way cooler devices than a clunky computer, namely the iphone (Apple's cell phone featuring a huge touch screen... apart from a thousand crazy apps and features you can make phone calls with it, or so I am told...:D ) and the Nintendo DS Lite, a little gaming console which can be tweaked (easily) into playing painting software:

a speed portrait on the iphone (note how zooming in and out works with pinching and stretching the image with thumb and index finger!)
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BY5Q-0cuBOM

Nintendo DS Drawing software:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aGbsqYdWSrQ&feature=related

Software in development for the Nintendo:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=C12oQalay9Q&feature=related

More sophisticated use of the Nintendo DS with the "Colors!" software:
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jJ2piF4tp1w&feature=related

sketches by our beloved zhuzhu he did with the Nintendo DS (I wish he'd post more often around here again):
http://zhuzhu.deviantart.com/gallery/#DS-Sketches

Wow, it's the 21st century, man! Especially the multi-touch screen of the iPhone with the ability to stretch the image with two fingers looks crazily sci-fi to me.

Until I can spend 200€ none of my family would miss in the fridge (read: will it ever happen? :scream: ) I will go on using the alpha-prehistoric versions of these devices for life drawings:

a pencil
a notebook
watercolor
brushes

I am so oldschool all of a sudden...:D

HEY Alice...LOL:scream:
ARE WE ALL STRUGGLING AROUND COMPOSITION...I would seriously hope so..LOL:scream: ...A painting that is not composed properly is like a bunch of words thrown in disorder onto a page...Somewhere in all of those words is a perfect sentence, but it can't be read as a perfect sentence, until all of those words are composed properly...
When it's done properly, it becomes pure poetry. :)
