View Full Version : Need some guidance on my first wee project!
heidinabucket 11-24-2002, 01:13 AM Complete noob me, this is me first bash at it. Wanna do an office chair(thrilling stuff eh?)and have used a spline line and extruded it and now would like to make it curvy at specific places...can someone suggest a way forwars, or point me in the direction of a tutorial specific to this question?
Cheers for all feedback!!!!

Which MAX are you workin in? If you are in 5, you can do the extrude along spline funcition other than that I dont know. BTW your chair looks nice.

I am using Max 5, thanks alot but as you can see from the picture that I am aiming for I have along long way to go!!!:hmm:

eek. :surprised You picked a kind of complex first project. Maybe pick an easier chair... like a stool? :)
I'm a noob too, I would approach this with subdivision modeling if I were to attempt it. Yes, as the name implies it is indeed painful for us noobs. :p

Yeah man, I defer to your wisdom...I am gonna rethink this first project(a stool sounds about right!)and do summat where I can use a technique with a measure of success.
I just cant seem to get off the groun with this software!!!!:thumbsdow

I think this chair would be a good project but approch it with Epoly, not SubD, its too hard. Other than that your going in a good direction, mind giving me the link to the chair schematics?

No problem! The chair came from this site.. http://www.nationalofficechairs.com/default.php?cPath=22&osCsid=2e24579f2a421cd31c0afdc4f2fb73c2

god damn that is one funky looking chair, if I had me one of those I would never walk again. Anyhow I would stay away from trying to use a spline and then exturding it to get teh shape, I find doing things that way really makes a hell of mess of the mesh, (unless it is a very simple shape that is) and thus makes texturing such stuff a nightmare, suppose I didn't really answer your question there, just added my 2c worth. Dunno if this helps but i find the best way to get a curve into an object is to cut a poly in half then raise the edge that you have just created up(away) a bit so it gets a somewhat trianglur shape then add smoothing groups to it, if it still isn't curvey enough repeat the process till ya get teh result you wanted. Now thats what I call a vauge and lazy explaination of how to go about it, but it is the best I can do.

 This project is complex, but with the right tools you can
do it. First try to see the parts of the chair, and think
about the best tool for each part. For example, the fabric,
sometimes is easier to do with surface, and the "legs", and
"arms" with box modeling. Here is an example, a chair modeled
with box modedling and meshsmooth. First the chair in low poly, and then with meshsmooth. One important think, pay attention
in every detail of the chair and go to another part when the one
you are working looks good. Good Look!!
