hi,
i used radiosity in a scene i am working on and it did not change the light ie) it did not bounce the light throughout the space. i am using logarithmic exposure control and photometric lights. i tried the max tutorials. does anyone have any tips that might fix this? i am using 3dsmax 8 and have done the tutorials. when i apply the same type of lights and radiosity settings i don't get the results. i am using scanline renderer as well as reflect/refract maps. is there a spcecific type of light that works better than the others? even when i put in just an daylight system it bounces the color of the floor throughout the entire room discoloring everything. i am getting a bit frustrated. i am not a pro at this stuff yet (if you couldn't tell) so any help would be great. thanks.

hello. One thing that often gets people when trying to apply radiosity to their own scenes is scale. Make sure your scene is at the right scale as is the intensity of your lights (try to use photometric lights for all radiosity). If your scale is off, you may not see any effect (i.e. black scene) when creating your solution.

Using radiosity in a scene is a balancing act. You have to make sure you don't give any light over exaggerated intensities. Remember that radiosity is light rays bouncing around your scene transferring engery onto each surface it touches. If you have a single light with a lot of energy it's just going to keep bouncing around the scene dragging the colors along with it. This is what you're seeing in your sun example. Those light rays hit the floor first (let's say it's blue) and carries some of that "blue" with it as it bounces around. If you keep everything to scale, including the light intensities & falloffs (IES files are good for this), it all "just works." However, if you mix and match various parts, it involves alot of trial-and-error.

Hope this helps. Good luck!
