uhm oh well, my question
is there any plugin/script/technique to get a symmetry similar to the one in wings3d?

I haven't tried Wings, but I guess what you're looking for is a way to model on one side of the model while the other side updates with the changes. (duh, symmetry :) )
I use smooth proxy for this. If you take a little trip into the option box, you'll have a decent ammount of settings to play with. If you want to simulate a symmetry modifyer simply do this:

Now you end up with a mirrored object responding to the changes you do on the low-poly object. In my case the one in the negative X. If you don't want a smoothed version responding, you simply select it and in the channelBox you can set "Exponential Level 0" under INPUTS.
Then you end up with a regular symmetry modifyer, but you also have the ability to smooth it and unsmooth it to check results.
