I crashed max yesterday while dragging a previously created file into the window of an already open scene (which i do a lot with no troubles up till now).
And now, wondrous to behold, Max will not launch! Goes past it's splash screen fine, loads up the quad windows, gets past the weird chopped-static-mess that fills the windows (which I assume is the fireGL card initializing, since it has done this since I bought the comp without trouble). Then the windows clear, just to the point where I can make something.... But no, a window pops up telling me that the application must now close and i can opt to try and save a copy, or if nothing was opened, it tells me nothing was changed, and all I can do is press OK.

Multiple restarts hasn't helped, insulting Autodesk with their report-a-problem-O-matic hasn't helped either. Any suggestions?
Should I just reinstall it? I hate doing that because it takes me forever to put all the settings back to how I wanted, or forever to gather all the custom keyboard and UI layouts and whatnot. And I always forget something too.

Well I'm annoyed as you can tell! I use fairly basic parts of Max, dont venture much into fancy lighting or hair or cloth, yet I have a feeling that I'm a beta tester for unfinished software. Anyone else feel this way? In fact maybe I'll add my own contribution over at the 'splash screen' forum ;)

Any help would be great, Including suggestions for what other software and software combinations I could use instead of Max. It is getting really old using software that never works properly.

You might want to try renaming your 3dsmax.ini. This WILL reset your preferences, but it may also fix the problem.

I can't say I've ever had a problem in the 5 odd years I've used it... Remember that most of the problems with any software are not to do with the application itself. It could be any number of factors.

Personally I found each version to be more stable than the one before. & what erilaz said

that does anoy me too, crossing over to 8 (or any new version) allways take a few weeks to iron out all the problems, and figure all the changes, including the changes they haven't documented. but I bet you can find the same issues from other app users.

Thanks for the tips, I got impatient so I reinstalled it, and it works now.

Wow, that is impressive, no problems for 5 years? When I was learning max, we were using version 3.5 and it was pretty buggy - nothing completely unusable, but buggy. I have noticed around the forums (and in my own work) that it seems to be an ongoing problem through the versions. But having never used other 3d apps, maybe they are all this way...

In which case, we should rise up against the beta quality software oppressors and say "No More!!".

Thanks again guys, I have calmed down now.

Here is another thing to try before doing anything drastic like re-installing or giving up completely on Max.

I once had a problem similar to yours when one of my scene files got corrupted. When I deleted all of the files in the Autoback folder, everything was fine. I know the backup files should have nothing to do with how Max loads but for some reason that fixed it.

EDIT: glad you got it working anyway

hmmm, well I should have been more patient to start with, some of these may have worked.
thanks again
