actually these are the most complicated areas on skinning. you won't find a way just by using skinning. probably you'll find the weight maps just for one side of the bending, but if you bend it in the other dir it will be worse.

you'll need to setup correction deformers to correct unnatural deformations from the skinning.

again, just using skinning will never make the job perfect. it's always a combination of many layered deformations to get the perfect result.

how to paint the weight maps !? just as swag said ! look into F1 or into older postings here at the forum.

look, there is nobody that can help you there. i can't give a tutorial for this, because this is never the same then a job before. it differs frm job to job. take the help files from maya (btw they are the best available help for maya) and watch out for deformers. leran everything you can get at deformers, and then use them for you skinning. also watch how your skin bends at different poses. look whats happening and then think about how you can get this result and which of the deformers is probably to best to drive the skin in that way. that's the whole secret. it isn't easy and you'll probably need some attempts. but thats what it is, there is no "make nice skinning" button in every software believe me.

so what sort of deformers would you recommend?

a nice way is a proxy model - skin/animate the proxy and the high poly will move softer - u can also drive a lowres Model with a wrap deformer and dont forget the influence objects (softskinning) - look in the help files - if u step in the rest will come automaticly

i tend to use clusters most time and sometimes sculpt deformers.
