for the most part your animation is working really well. my biggest crit would be that this particular sound byte is so dramatic that i picture it being a tighter shot, pretty much just the characters shoulders and head. there would be a lot going on in the characters face. he's speaking so softly that i dont think he'd really be moving all that much.

having said that, what you do have is looking pretty good. the only crits i have are whenever he takes a step forward, (i think you have him doing it twice) he's lifting his foot WAY too high off the ground. do it yourself and see how your foot moves. you'll find that it's almost a slide on the ground. very little height happening. other than that it's looking pretty good. at the end when he pats the headstone, it seems a little cliche/silly. i'd make a different acting choice. the dialogue is SO serious. i'd crop your shot to just the head and shoulders so we can really see what's going on with the characters eyes, eyebrowes, etc.

good work so far. keep on posting!

Morgan Freemans a cool guy, met him a couple months ago :)

As for the animation, I like it. I agree with Capel about the height of the steps. Also, when his hand touches the headstone, his hand "flutters" (for lack of a better word). It seems like he should just touch it, tap it once/twice or something to that effect.

First off Capel, Excellent demo reel!! Ok with that said I took all your comments to heart, and went back last night and made some more changes. Here is the updated version: http://www.dondixon.com/damnrighta.mpg

metinicus- You are right it is very interesting and funny to see such a powerful voice come out of this Rig, which by the way is created by Peter Starostin.:)

-Jack Thats Awesome you met him. He is such a great actor! And Shawshank redemption is my most favorite movie!

Thanks alot guys, I hope to one day be working in Feature Animation, So the crits really do help alot!

thanks.

ok, it's looking better. his second step needs to be more of a shuffle, like his first one is now. it's still way too high off the ground. also, on frame 1 his hand is almost at his side, then at frame two it pops up. i'd just shave off that first frame.

one thing i noticed, after, "get busy dyin'." when he puts his hand back down to his side, it's floating around before he brings it back up to the headstone. one mistake that some animators make is that they think everything needs to be moving all the time. they leave out moving holds. this is a good example of that, i think. with such a soft, dramatic sound byte, he's not gonna be moving that much between poses. so i think his left hand is gonna go right to rest at his side, and BARELY move until he starts moving it toward the headstone. make sense? you don't want it to stop completely. you can get away with that in 2D, but not 3D. just some miniscule movement. you'll "feel" it more than anything.

also, when he's leaning forward to say, "thats goddamn right" his right arm swings back kinda fast for like four or five frames. kinda distracting. i'd slow it down to the pace that it has before and after. hope that made sense.

BUT, these are getting into the nit picky things. (other than the foot crit) so yeah, but you can never polish "too much". lookin good. keep on truckin and you'll be in features in no time.
