View Full Version : Modeling: Refine/connect
Leovinus 12-07-2005, 03:39 PM Hello again Everyone, i keep struggling with 3Ds Max 8 and i love it. Now however i have another problem. I've now reach "Making a Knight" in the tutorial (i know not that far, bare with me) but there is a difference that hinders me from going any further.
I am doing a Spline cage from a refference image provided by the tutorial and everything goes smooth untill i am supposed to refine/connect vertices. The Key differences are as follows:
1.When adding vertics, no vertics are created on crossing splines
2.When adding vertics from a bezier corner they "meld" wheres the end attachment vertix is not melded to the spline i put it on
This in turn blocks me from the rest of the tutorial phase
Again i'd love it if someone of you could point out what i'm doing wrong hehe
If anyone has 3Ds Max 8, you could check the tutorial i'm speaking of as i don't know how to attach images.

Check that you do not have 3D sanps on. I have noticed this happening and I don't know if I am doing somthing wrong as well but I think that MAX Snaps the additional verts onto the nearest vert.
After you try to add a vert with refine you can probably select it and move it to where you need it.
Hope that helps!

There's a bug in Max8 - add and edit spline modifier, refine then collapse... it really sux bad...

Can someone else confirm this? i don't see any other people having problems with this. Also i'm not using the modifier list but the geometry rollout to access Refine/Connect, i'll check if it exists in the modifiers list though. Is there any other ways around this? I really want to keep going with everything so i don't loose steam so to speak.

Oh, I can confirm this bug one hundred times.
Another tip: after adding and using an extra Edit Spline modifier, immediately collapse your stack (completely or partially). I've had several times that I edited a spline, then save my work and find out that some changes weren't maintained when I reopened the max file.
I've never had a previous Max version that was so buggy as 8.0.

Still new to Max so by stack you mean "spline(whatever you name spline object)" submenu "vertex" "other" "other"?
And i thought it was best to get the latest and greatest? guess i was wrong but is there a way to overcome this? friends tell me to download tutorials off the net and shit to get going but i prefer going from the basic the way Autodesk intended it, or is that wrong of me? feels i should learn in the best pace and direction instead of face modeling before you know what a spline is so you know what you're doing. And i just assumed Autodesk knew the better way, dunno; correct me if i'm wrong hehe

This "problem" of mine was actually covered in the tutorial later on, however i had overseen it and not noticed it untill a few days back.
