View Full Version : Making this plastic material
Modifier 12-06-2005, 07:13 PM Hey All,
I must be a loser. I cannot seem to remember much since I've last used Max. I need to create the plastic shipping crate in this link:
http://lariat97.freewebspace.com/
I made the 3d model of the crate, but I cannot get the material to come close to looking like the picture. I only want to create the main box material. I am not worried about the handles or labels.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I would use a medium highlight with a small base and blurred reflections in a fresnel falloff, maybe add some noise and scratches in the bump.
I think you mean the vertical body (black) not the top one (aluminium green or so).
Firs open the reference photo in Max and File/View Image file (so you can right
click on it and a color slot fills with the color sampled)
And now go step by step building the material:
Diffuse: Look at the photo. It is near black. Sample the color as comented above.
Highlights: Look they are very weak. Sample the color of the highlight and
try putting glossines in 20 and specular level in 40.
Reflection: Raytrace using 15 of strength. I think is not possible blurring the raytrace
map so if you want blur reflections use the metal(lume) instead, but you need switch
to mental ray renderer to do so.
After the first tests look right then enhance the material using mix and noise and smoke and so maps in diffuse and reflection and specular slots. When more complex more real it will be.
Take a look if you want to the Lightsaber I've posted in the Mental Ray shader discussion, Post #2785 (http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?p=2887482#post2887482). You can take a look to my blurred metals there.

Actually it is possible to blur raytrace reflections without mr, adding noise to the bump will create an uneven surface which blurs by itself a bit. And well -the top material is the same like the side material.
Btw, aluminium is light grey - like the metal parts on the crate - not green.
And yes, use a noise map with a very small size for the diffuse, with the matching colors, solid colors aren't very real.

Bump noise is not what I call a solution to blur reflections. With scanline there is the
Reflect/Refract and inside you have blur. I would prefer a blur amount option in the Raytrace map like the Reflect/Refract has.
The top material looks diferently to me. Looks metallic and the vertical part look plastic to me.
