Title: Dragon And Castle
Name: Richard Jordan
Country: United Kingdom
Software: Photoshop

I am trying to get away from character designs for a while to broaden my skills. I have atttempted to give an atmospheric depth to the scene and merge photographic elements with painted ones. Please let me know what you tink of this image.

Regards

Rich

ye looks awesome, and i see what you mean about combining photo elements with painted ones... i dont know if you intended in doing this, but i like the images mystery in that you dont know whethere the dragon is attacking or protecting the castle... i think it can be read either way...

also love the different take on the wingless dragon, looks more like a dino... looks cool and somehow more narly...

very nice concept. I would've liked to see more detail in the trees in the forground and not so much darkness.
4 stars from me! I really like it.

Hi Richard,

very beautiful work:thumbsup:. I very much like how you´ve made the fire/clouds. The lightning contrasts are also very beautiful. The widescreen composition fits perfectly for this scene.

Maybe the castle could have been modified a bit more in a mysterious or different way as regards the design but that´s a very subjective impression I would say.
The topic might not be new but in my opinion you´ve created a serious out of the box dragon-artwork compared to umteen dragon images out there.

Great work.

Great atmosphere and of course... DRAGONS! Dude, I love dragons. Nice that you decided to create a dragon without wings... less typical. Amazing work!

Cheers!

I really like this picture. The elements come together seamlessly, and the dragon design is not the prototypical approach (which is good). It has really nice weight and size though, so you can imagine how fearsome it would be. The whole scene reminds me of something you'd see in medieval England, covered in fog on a dreary day. Great stuff!

Ooh I like. I have mixed emotions about the overly dark areas at the bottom though. At first site I didn't like them at all but after staring at it for a few minutes I think I dig it.

My guess is that the dragon is their to protect the castle, and thus at the instance growth of the flames in one of the towers, his attention is quickly deviated to it. That is if i'm reading his motion correctly, from the looks of it his whole body is shifting towards that angle as the artist either intentionally or instinctivley gave it that posture. I await his personal fedback on this matter,

All in All great job, there are hints of depth through out the still. I also like how the colours tend to guide the eye through out the piece, first the dragon then the castle. When it comes to depth there is always room for improvement, I've also been trying out my depth perception skills latley, and it is quite the challenge to conjure such a feature.

My younger brother (whose been naging me twice as much today and is aslo admiring your work) has just also gave me his intresting perception on the subject. According to his glance the dragon Is taunting the castle after slightly attacking it, as he pointed out that the dragons's adam's apple looks a bit fiery active as well.

The subject is old, tired. Your treatment is new and insired. You've grounded the dragon so well that is almost a part of the cliff its sitting on. There's a sadness to the scene that is unusual. I think that is done by the low-key tonality, the connection between the terestrial elements--cliff, castle--and the flighty--the dragon and the atmosphere.

The crits would be that the composition tips a bit to the right, and the dragon's neck bend in a way that is harsh. It feels like an abrupt bend, where you would think it would be a gentle overall curve like the tail does. It's jarring.

The posing is great. You get a sense of connection between the dragon and castle, though you don't know what. Its as if the dragon cares about the castle, yet its the most likely cause of the fire that will soon destroy it. The warm light of the fire repeats on the dragon, a great touch. Finally, the posing is nice--I llove the expressive legs of the beasty.

Would you describe the brushes you've used in Photoshop? So many people like to work this way (2D) in Painter. I own it, but am not comfortable, I prefer to 'paint' in Photoshop. How you work would be interesting to know.

Nice piece!

fantastic. everything about this image is absolutley flawless, for the style.

i love the lighting, the composition, the atmosphere, the dragon, the castle, the clouds, the fire.

both of the focal points, the dragon and the castle, beautifully break away from the norm, which is awesome to see.

the castle appears more modest, and doesn't feature as much grandeur as is commonly portrayed in the representation of the classic, majestic-sort-of castle.

and the dragon's tone is entirely apart from the norm as well, yet still manages to portray great power.

five from me.

I like your picture, and very good combined paint+photo.
When I saw the picture on the home page of cg I believed that it was an illusion because I saw an elephant and a sort of dinausaure or monster.
It is not maybe the case but if one carries attention that is maybe that to the moment to make the dragon your subconscious thought to an elephant =)

He he! So glad that you've taken inspiration from a Romanian castle (the Bran castle for those who don't know). I've been there as a child and has inspired me ever since.

Great job, I love it

I like this one.

Only thing that stood out to me what right below the dragon's head, where the neck gets a bit thick.

And the dragon's tail is quite long. He/she'd be a bit off balance when walking around.

I really like the idea of a wingless dragon protecting a castle (at least that's what it looks like to me). I have to agree that the neck does look like it has a bit of an unnatural bend, but nothing too major. i also really like the fack that it's underbelly all the way to his head glows a touch. It's a nice way to emphasize it's fiery nature.
