i've bought some anatomy books in an effort to improve my drawings...and try to get more interesting poses too. here are some stuff, the ones that look more finished are based off of sketches i scanned in and worked with. sorry for poor quality, i just use a camera to take pics of my sketchbook. i posted some of this stuff in another thread so you may have seen a few. post more gestural stuff later!

a painting i just did now, i didn't really get to finish the hands or feet so they're sort of small and off.

oh this is great - i have been following your wip/selfportrait thread and I am really looking forward to this.

Great sketches - I especially like the light on the face and facial expression as well as flow of hair in the first one!

i tried to practice drawing noses. it didn't work too well, but i learned some things. i'm trying to do a different feature every week. ignore all the little faces - i was trying to practice a "realistic" approach to a feature and then draw it from memory, and then try to simplify it into how i normally doodle. that didn't really work either ^^

Hi
Hpslashluvr
If you are haveing trouble with facial features, and want to do them from memory,
I highly recommend two books by Burne Hogarth....#1 Drawing The Human Head
#2 Dynamic Anatomy. He did most of his drawing from memory. His books are great for
learning, and very easy to understand, and not priced to high, you can get them used
also on the internet. I will post you a couple of links later today.I think you will really
like them, and they will help you a great deal, if you choose to buy them.
I still really like your line work..post more.. and you should really consider joining the
figure drawing workshop...Rebecca is a great teacher, and will help you take your
skill to the next level, and there are also a lot of talented people there who will be more
than happy to help you develope your skill....:)

oooh yeah i'm so tempted to join but i'm working so hard right now on one of my pieces ^^ maybe after new yrs

edit: thanks for the book suggestions. my roommate is prolly already going nuts over how many books i've bought that are art related in the last like 2 months:

nude figure (photography)
figure in motion (photography)
facial expressions (photography)
spectrum 12
how to draw manga
2 gnomon dvds
2 d'artiste books

That Facial Expressions book is a great find, I have that one too! I use it religiously! Try more observational drawing and try to see planes of the face as shapes, that way if you recognize them as shapes it will seem more natural and more realistic! There is tru;y no line in anything on this planet, on what you put on paper. study craig mullins work, he has a great example of doing that, good luck!

hpslashluvr
12-17-2005, 02:45 PM
that's sort of my exact problem, i do a LOT of observational work but i would like to draw more westernized features. i've had a lot of ppl tell me that it's all the same, but i can tell you back that it really isn't. for instance, i don't have a eyelid fold, or a nose bridge, or an eyebrow ridge, etc etc.

Hi
Hpslashluvr
You can order Burne Hogarth books, at.....ALIBRIS .COM or AMAZON .COM
The nice thing about his books are how he showes how to draw all the races of people.
He was my teacher many years ago, and when people would ask him to draw a face,
the first thing he would say is...well what race of face would you like to see, then he
would rapidly produce whatever race of person that was requested, right there in front of everyone...used to really amaze me. I asked him what his secret was one time, and he
said that there were three or four major groups that have similar features, according
to which group they belonged in, and that it was just a matter of small detail, and
modification to to creat the race of person within each group.....
Buy his books when you can...you'll get a lot more in return, than you spent on them
for sure...
PS.....I like your self portrait...

a lot of ppl at cgtalk have told me that my ppl esp my girls are hella ugly  so i'm sort of practicing that...drawing a pinup of a friend. i'm sort of stuck on non-cliche poses but i'm going for a really soft innocent look. sorry if the anatomy is off...these are just rough idea sketches >.< i'll worry about the resemblance later.

any ideas would be cool! :bounce:

hpslashluvr,

Hey there, :) I think the thing that I would suggest would be to go after realism with these. I think it's only possible to stylize well if one has a strong understanding of realistic anatomy. Plus, when you are going for realism, you will push yourself and your skills further than you would with a more manga or cartoon~style character.

Have you considered participating in the Open Figure Drawing Workshops? (http://forums.cgsociety.org/showpost.php?p=2602753&postcount=3) I think you could really push your skills a lot further there, amongst a dedicated group of people. :) A new OFDW 10 will start late Sunday / early Monday and will likely continue for 3 instead of 2 weeks due to the holidays (if that's what everyone wants). :) If you have the time, I hope you will join in! :)

Cheers,

i actually wasn't going for a manga style at all  haha but i sort of can see where you'd think i had. i based these off of photography references in one of my books.

i'm planning to spam the workshops soon, don't worry ^^

Rebeccak
12-24-2005, 05:49 PM
LOL ~ hehe, sorry for the manga confusion...:D ~ I mostly based this conclusion on the face of your first drawing, but the body is more realistic. Sorry for that! :D

Looking forward to your OFDW spam. ;)

some more ideas. ignore the faces....they're just placeholders. are the girls too fat? once i pick a pose later i'll prolly exaggerate the proportions a bit to look more like a pinup and less like a regular anatomy practice. and the outfits....well, i guess i'll need to work on those.

hpslashluvr,

It looks like you have a nice general sense of the figure. :) The thing I notice with the upper set of poses is not that she looks fat, so much as she looks to be lacking a waist ~ without which, the twist is hard to make look realistic. I think you want more of a transition between the stomach and the buttocks ~ the key to the pose here is really the twist, and you'll probably want to exaggerate that to get the effect you want. :)

With the bottom poses, I think her head, particularly with it being so near the viewer, should be quite a bit larger. I would also give her a neck and move the head a bit away from the body more.

But the general structure is there, and you've got a good start. Do you plan to paint these?

Cheers, :)

hpslashluvr

i'm planning to paint the pose that my friend chooses...she chose this one out of all of the choices >.< it seemed to be one of the most uninteresting IMO...but it IS for her, so...*shrugs* you can see the sketch of this - it is the first one on the first set of gestures below.

um....so...anatomy...*hides*...and i still don't know what kind of outfit she should wear. i'll change her expression/hair to something more sexy later ^^

and her boobs give me trouble. *sniffs* i'll try to make them bigger later too ^^

http://img384.imageshack.us/img384/1903/preview15nt.jpg

here were the rest of the sketches (plus the ones i've posted already) that i offered her:

hpslashluvr,

Heya, I think these sketches all look really good...the one thing I think they are missing is a waist. ;) Try using the 'peanut' method to roughly / lightly block in the shape of the torso. The upper and lower torso (the rib cage and pelvis) can together be described as a peanut shape, which works in almost any view and almost any perspective. This might be a good tool to sort of elongate the form and include a waist. Hope this helps! :)

Cheers,

01-10-2006, 08:04 AM
ummm another view of the same pose? i think her legs are prolly too stocky. i sort of wanted a natural look now that i think about it but perhaps she's still too short. her hair is a bit big too lol, it's meant to look brushed over.

hp,

Heya, I think that the waist is missing in this one a bit too...:D ~ don't hate me because I harp on waists. :D

Her bottom should sort of be in more perspective ~ eg ~ the torso, we are looking up at, and the bottom should sort of curve under, with the waist being more dead on from the viewer's perspective ~ it's sort of crucial for that spatial transition, if that makes sense.

Hope this helps. :)

Cheers,

Love that free flowing elegant line work in that last drawing...child on top of sphere....:)

a great imagination....the book that I have of his , is called...HALLELUJAH ANYWAY a real

Nice progression on these. Your figure handling is pretty solid; nice flow and poses; kudos on all the foreshortening work, too. That SP is nicely done; I like the palette on that.

Nice charcoal studies (at least, I'm assuming that's charcoal) in the latest round, and the digital looks great; nice range of values, solid lighting work.

edit: The chick's ears(?) seem to be the only bits with any color in the piece. Is there any particular reason for that? My eyes kept going to the ears for that reason.

well, i've been really busy with a lot of schoolwork, trying to pull up my grades in my math and japanese class :( and a bunch of projects...

the reason the girl's ears are sepia is because the sketch was in sepia, i just haven't painted over them completely so the lines show through. you can see some of the other sepia linework...

Welp, I didn't do everything I planned for this month AKA head studies and my CHOW piece due to just being tired from work and class. I started a life drawing class that runs around 4 1/2 to 5 hrs Mon-Thurs o.O;;;

I did my new yr's rez though! ^^ I already posted the costume study and the anatomy study. Here are my color studies and my lighting study.

it's funny, cuz i've been trying to find a good lighting ref for my fruits basket pic and here it is! i changed the photo a little to suit the fruits basket pic i had...nothing much...just hair. i know she's kinda wide too but it's ok.

Yay, bunch of great stuff to look at. I especially like the life drawings with watercolor pencil, very good! The girl on the chair too, the environment, armor learning, haha, awesome.
A pleasure watching these. Nice to see variety in mediums. I really get fascinated when people put great variety of mediums into good use. For example, Feng Zhu.
Keep this thread updated, Hpslashluvr. Damn that's a hard nickname...:)

some more life drawing from the start of the semester till now...for some reason all my life drawings turn out really bad at my school, but i think it's because they are at night after a whole day of work and classes. some of them were taken at an angle so whatever...and some of the girl drawings may look weird, but i swear that girl is like 5 ft tall, big boobs, skinny waist, and the thickest legs ever. she could kill you with them. oh and all of these were like really short gestures so i didn't get to shade really.

Hey, are those her eyes? I mean that red stripe thing?? Kewl cat rendering...cel-shaded prolly easier to animate in ghibli's case.

I like the pattern on that face!

How do you get the sunray brush?

no, that's me as san riding my roommate's cat ^^ for my website enter page. and NO those are not her eyes, san has red stripes running down under her eyes. i even put them to the side instead of under so that ppl wouldn't confuse them for eyes. Can't you see she's smiling like >.< ??? =P

anyways thanks for the comments.

spiffy gave me the link to baronteri's brushes...go to his site if you haven't and get those too! his also come with patterns if you're into that.
ok, i have decided that trying to shade this f'ing cat orange and white is the bane of my life. soooo hard.....and my friend said to make it angry again...i redrew it to look more like a persian and i couldn't get it to look right so i made it white...which might actually be better so it doesn't draw the focus away from san.

[/B]

i decided that the reason all my art sucks is cuz i take myself way too seriously. so with little time remaining i redid my TD...i didn't have time to do a real background (i was planning on fighting in a dragon mouth or something lame) so i did a mario type bg. it actually took a while cuz i don't know how to get two colors for a gradient in painter :(

the girl is supposed to be me...has WAY bigger boobs than me...anyhoo i chose a pose out of an anime drawing book and tried to implement some anime cliches - the pose, the awful revealing outfit, the awful nonpractical boots, naruto handgloves and hairbands.

just imagine some glow on the chakra blade and a chidori in the other hand and some motion blur and we're set :D

this has to be the fastest i've ever worked....basically one night. its due tomorrow :)
