//Note there are newer tests in following posts\\

Hi everyone,

I just wanted to share a piece I've been working on. Its an acting exercise.

The basic of what I've done so far is a homeless person really down on his luck sees a bill of indiscriminate amount of money fly by. He pounces on it because he really needs the money. In his effort to get the money he knocks it away and grabs for it (i used cat reference of a cat pawing a butterfly for inspiration). He celebrates his new found money, but then fear of loosing it sets in and he immediately thinks to protect it and becomes paranoid.

Eventually I intend to have him run off frame fearfully and have a larger guy run after him. Then in a follow-up assignment I want to demonstrate two character solidly interacting by having them fight over the bill, ending up with the bill riping in half and they both walk away thinking they each came out with half the money.

Pose Test Thus far:

Quicktime Movie: Money For Nothing (http://www.dhpictures.com/demomovies/moneyfornothing/moneyfornothing.mov)

The poses are there but the timing is as of right now really off. I defiantly need to work that out next. I also need to adjust the camera's positioning to better frame him.

Thanks for taking the time to look at my project. Any comments and crits are most appreciated. I'll be posting more as I progress and taking all comments into consideration.

Thanks!

I've gone through and improved the timing of the piece. Also finished blocking this characters poses out.

Money for Nothing: Version 02 - Quicktime. (http://www.dhpictures.com/demomovies/moneyfornothing/moneyfornothing02.mov)

Next I'll flesh in the arcs further while adding inbetweens.

Any critiques on the poses or the timing thus far?

Thanks :)

Wau! Considering that this is my first post on cgtalk, Im very glad that it is related to your animation exercise. I find it very expresive. Im very curious how itll look finished. I like the anticipation and everything related to your character. Are you always animating pose to pose in the beginning?

Hey guys, so I've finished the pop thru or pose test. What do you guys think?

I've also done some tests on lighting. Fairly basic at the moment. I'd like to push this into a more moody film noir kinda look. I'll be checking out Citizen Kane tonight for inspiration.
Here is the lighting i have so far. Character only because the lighting on the character looks fine but it blows out my prop and bg.

Are you always animating pose to pose in the beginning?
I generally try to get the main storytelling poses blocked in pose to pose in the beginning, and then go about adding breakdowns in a more straight ahead fashion. But its not a hard rule I follow.
I do try to keep stepped in the beginning for the most part however, or else I'll keep two key frames side beside in spline mode simulating a stepped project. This is for my acting pieces on tho. I'm still finding my own groove to be honest. For walks I like to work on individual pieces and not actual poses.

Does anyone have any advice on lighting or on moving from this stepped version and onto a linear or splined version? Anything I ought to watch out for?

Thanks for your help,

Daryl Hunter

So I've gone through the first linear pass. Fixing up the weird rotational errors, and adjusting the timing. Here is where its at now:
