CGTalk - Family Portrait

hey ppl

I'm a recent art & design graduate & I've been drawing with the pencil & paper ever since I can remember, I like character design and still life portraits so, I figured the idea of my family portrait which I would be doing for the very first time, a portrait of my older sister & mother.

here's a photo sample of them both in Wellington :

here's the 1st wip of the portrait, takes a while to get everything proportionally right :

I will resume my progress with this to make it look better, so critiques are welcomed just to help me improve my portraits.

You have a really nice start on these, the nose and teeth on the younger woman need a little correction. The nose appears slightly larger than in the picture and it looks like you have drawn upper and lower teeth in the smile when only the upper teeth should be seen. It might also be nice to have them dressed in nicer clothes and have their hair looking neatly combed. You already have the photo to show them in that moment in time. In a portrait you have an opportunity to show them at their best and to also express more of their personality by surrounding them with items that represent who they are and also dressing them to show who they are or what they do.

Really great job so far but you might give what I said a thought as you layout the composition. Good luck! I know this will be a special piece.

nice drawing. Any of its problems come from the source photo which (though a nice snapshot) is a bit confusing. This is often the way with working from photos.

I am not sure how effectivly your mother is behind your sister. Try putting your mothers arm round your sister and see if it makes any difference (you will have to invent it).

Also... the bend in her jacket looks like the bend of her arm (in fact it would be a lot lower).

The corners of the mouthes are a bit sharp.
