View Full Version : EFFECTS SHOT:Falling watertower Please Critique
digitalREFLECT 11-23-2002, 01:16 AM Besides the fact that there is no sound, I would like to know what everybody thinks of this shot I just finished. It's the first real attempt I've made at effects compositing. It was done in Maya. Thanks

Well i reckon the speed in which it falls to the ground is great. There is something that doesnt seem right at the very end when the bars go back to their orginal postions, maybe you should have them fall to the ground rather then look like rubber :)
Also at the start when the right hand side bar breaks, the tower looks like its weight is on the right however it moves back and falls to the left. Otherwise great work, especially with it breaking the building on the way down.

Ditto with what More said.
Also it feels like there need to be more crumpling of the water tower and the support struts should get a lot more bent and twisted. Also some more FX touches like a cloud of dirt, or some escaping water will help the landing more.
Looking top notch though.

yup, i agree with More as well... the supports don't seem to make the right impact when they hit the ground... but the motion of the tank falling is very sweet ;)
Looks good. My little crit is about the debris. The bricks that fall seem kind of dead. I don't think they would bounce much but they should break a little more when hitting the ground. Maybe even a little more bounce. Nice work though.

A tower that big, no matter how well reinforced, is not going to maintain it's shape when it falls 5 stories, the whole thing needs to implode, and water (if it's still in use) needs to come exploding outward. . .
I agree, when it loses that first support, it's weight would carry it in that direction, unless it already had some momentum. But as it is, it would fall toward the first support it loses, i.e. to the right.
Also. . . why does it fall in the first place?

woah, this is really cool. Think you can work on the landing of the water tank... it needs a bit of a bounce and a roll after it hits the ground the first time... well, at least that's what my gut feeling tells me... same for the debris...
otherwise, this is very very sweet animation! I love what you did with the camera! hehe... like someone was holding a handycam... and the scene is so real! love the lighting and texturing!

Any contents in the tower?
Assuming it's made of sheet metal...
I would suggest making part of a "side" cave in after it hits the ground?
Other than that....Kickass

everything about this animation is perfect... well... except for the lack of water rushing down the street since this thing is probably going to release upwards of 1 million gallons or more in one fell swoop... Also, more destruction dude...

I'm telling you it's not perfect, that tower would collapse in on itself like it were made out of tin foil!. . . .

as everybody said, it misses the dirt and the water as well as the shape of the tower. good work.

Great animation!
I have to agree with Tumerboy though.
Something else. It feels like the support leg that is closest to the camera should bend in half from the weight... might just be me though.
Great work otherwise! :)

I think it's cool. I've driven by that building hundreds of times when I worked in Detroit. Just cool to see something cool happen to it.
Now the crit. The tower almost looks like it's rebuilding itself at the very end. The camera angle makes it look kinda akward. I also agree that it should collapse a great deal.. from its weight and distance from the ground. Some big dust cloud would be helpful to show the immense weight of the tower also.
Very cool though. Nice demo reel too.

I would definetly agree that its not perfect. Thanks so much to everybody for the helpfull imput. I will be reworking in over the next couple weeks to add some more details to it. I will repost it as soon as I can

Sorry digital, that came out wrong, I just meant that there's always ways to make it better, it's an awesome job already, all I was saying is that I get frustrated with people who come on here all the time and just say everything's great. That bugs me cuz I know that when I post something, it's not great, and I want feedback on what would make it better since there's always something. . . I don't want to hear that it's perfect, because I can always find more to do, I just want other perspectives because you should all find something different than what I'll see. . .
Anyway, hope I didn't offend, I just was trying to get people to understand that.

Is there any motion blur on it as it's falling? If there is, I don't think it's enough, since it falls quite fast.
Really well integrated into the shot, and the motion is great.

1 - I'd change the dynamic the way this pipe running under the center of the tank reacts. I think it would crumple or snap before flexing that much.
2 - If this tank had water in it, I dont think that this one outside leg would continue to support that much weight on its' weld and continue over the edge of the building. That tank would almost fall straight down and react totally different of course.
3 - The thing i noticed that stood out the most was the way you camera is setup. I know its a tracked shot but the shot follows the tank too closely. If there is no other subject in the shot its just seems weird how the viewer/camera op knew the tower would collapse exaclty at that moment and be ready to capture it.
These are just my opinions and your work so far is sweet. Cant wait to see if you put water effects into it. Keep us posted

Yeah, good point, Abominable. If you wanna make it look more like an accident, it helps to keep the center of attention a bit offset from the cameras position, to make it look more amateurish. Of course, adding sudden zooms and pannings is always great for this, but is a REAL pain to track....

no problem, I'm not offended or anything. I am happy to be getting feedback. I posted it knowing that there were a few problems with it, just wanted to see what everybody else thought. . .

Great footage :)
The thing that bothered me the most was the way it crashed into the ground, at that height it wouldnt have been so weak, it should have certainly crushed if it had water in it.
The crash was probably the thing that most made it feel not like actual footage, but also the things Abominable pointed out :)

in my opinion.......if you hadnt said it was a cg composite and just said something like, look what i saw in the general discussion forum, NOONE would have thought it was anything but a video of a falling water tower.
in otherwords i think it looks incredible, and i dont see what everyone is complaining about.

It's not complaints, but I would have had to see that on CNN or something to actually believe it's anything but Cg. . .

I have passed it off to a couple people as real already. To somebody who isnt looking for CG, it seems ok. Thats why I cant wait to add all the stuff thats been suggested so that even more people wont be able to tell:)
