I'm sure this question has probably been asked many times before, but I'd like to know which would be best suited for my needs:

I'd like to be able to color correct and adjust brightness/contrast and add blurs to sequences, which I understand both can do, but would also like to add miscellaneous things like camera shake and text ( nothing fancy for the text, just title screens that blur away or simple fade-ins/outs ). I'd also like to be able to highlight specular effects for a glow on brighter regions of a clip ( light bloom ) and tween sound panning per sound clip ( i.e. bullet flying past the camera made from a mono sound file ).

Both seem to be able to stitch multiple clips together and share many similar features, which is making me confused. Does Premiere have any sort of limited layering and alpha channel support? I'd be using this primarily for fully CG 3D animations, and I understand AE is bigger on 3D compisiting, but I'm not sure I'd use many of the advanced compositing functions. I'm leaning towards Premiere, but would like more professional advice.

Thanks for your time.

Premiere is a editing app and AfterEffects is more for Compositing and Motiongraphics. You can do a very basic compositing in Premiier and vice versa you can do a basic editing in AfterEffects.
For your purposes I would suggest AfterEffects as it sounds that you are going for graphic post work on your animations, not for editing.

I shouldn't have any problems sequencing clips together in AE though, should I? ( Pardon the lack of a technical term )

Thanks for the reply.

By basic he means "very basic." You can't just put clips in and just watch them, adding transitions and things of that sort. You have to watch a RAM preview and things like that. Fades can be done with opacity keyframes and tranistions with masks and stuff but Premiere is more of the editor. I think it would be a pain in the butt myself. Ill composite in AE and edit in Premiere. Its a nice workflow and doing both in one program will be hell for you trust me. Just my 2 cents.

I suggest you get AE and the basic version of premiere (premiere elements?). If you're not doing heavy editing then it should work fine for you and it costs much less. Of course you should try the demo versions and see what works for you.

I use AE for special effects, such as composition, lighting, grading and such. I only use a bare min. of the effects toys in premiere but of the ones I do use is the transitions as there fact, pretty robust and easy to use.

On the PC I use AE for editing tho its also does motion graphics and title sequences and whatnot. IF and when I get on a Mac (like at School)... I rather use Final Cut Pro. For some reason I'm not a big fan of Premiere.

I appreciate all the info, guys - Looks like I'll be going with After Effects until I can afford Premiere; and until then Imight check out some open source alternatives. Again, thanks for the input. ;)

If anyone else would like to add on, feel free!

Defintiely before you buy you should download the demos. I'm not exactly sure which one would be more beneficial to you. If you are planning on putting dozens of sequences together Premiere is probably what you want. I made a poor choice of editing in After Effects once (I needed to use it for some scenes, but I should have just imported the couple parts into AE and then exported bringing them back into Premiere)
