Here is my attempt at painting a traditional figure exclusively in Photoshop:

Here I was trying to correct some modelling on the hips and belly...

I'm not sure about the proportions, and terrified of when I get to details.

They most usefully reminded me to use the entire program and what it has to offer...

I've been sketching and scribbling since basically forever, though I'm not sure with what results. Photoshop has been a fun toy more recently, but I'm slow to master the tool and style. I think you should take advantage of the image icon in the text editor of this website in order to inline link the images as it is a bit tiresome to open them all.:)

As concerns the paintings and doodles, as rebeccak said, the ressources in the anatomy forum will be a good choice as many of the female characters suffer from proportional weaknesses (not the distortions you may have done on purpose...).

...and here I thought I was saving valuable screen and bandwidth real estate by making them voluntary... heh.

I think my main problem here is a bit of laziness: It's easy to get an idea and throw a sketch together, but I do not think non-creative people realize the amount of discipline it requires to follow something through to clean and accurate completion. That's a tangent, there. One day, one happy day, I will stick with an image long enough to be proud of it... Hopefully, this one will make it.

Absolutely! Following a piece through completion is the very best way to learn. Struggling with the difficult aspects of a painting until you get it right is the best lesson of all. You can do it! It takes courage and persistance to get there.

No problem! Really glad you find them useful. :)

PLEASE copy and paste the URLs of your images into the image icon ~ it makes browsing ever so much easier! I have to admit that I pass over images that are linked usually, I'm just too lazy to click! :) I think a lot of other people are, too. ;)

I took a look at a few of your pieces, and several look quite nice! Definitely hope to have your participation in the next OFDW, which should launch this Sunday/nextMonday. I think you could really improve your digital painting skills by participating! :)

Well, I have made an attempt to add value to this thread by dropping the pictures in line with the posts.

I was even going to post my most recent update of that main image, but realized that I hadn't ftp'd it to my site yet, and don't have it on the computer I'm on now. However, I figured it would be a shame to open this 'reply' window and not use it. So I would like to take a moment to thank those of you who have been kind enough to look over my work, and especially RebeccaK, Mr. Mu and Euphrosyne for your help, advice and support.

Regarding Mr. Mu's comment (Not the distortions you may have done on purpose...), pretty much all of my distortions are done on purpose. Of course, typically this is due to lack of skill or patience, although I am aware of it at the time, and then I get to use the excuse that I am being influenced by the likes of Egon Schiele, Manga and Lori Earley (http://www.loriearley.com). Though, if I could really paint like that I would be very, very happy...

Wow, you really have a unique way of working. I would be frustrated if I were made to work in such a blurry way. How ever it might make an interesting way to force myself to try something new and paint in a looser style. Blurriness just makes me crazy, like I'm going blind.

Well enough of that. I looked at more of your paintings and I am very interested in the process that you are going through to make your painting. The paintings that you have completed are quite nice and I can see how you have progressed from your earlier work. I am looking forward to seeing more of your work.

Truth be told, I don't necessarily work blurry on purpose... I', judt not very smooth with 'brushstrokes', so I'm constantly throwing on blur filters, adding semi-transparent layers, etc. I'm not entirely sure what constitutes 'normal' as far as working digitally goes, but I tend to have 10-20 layers open at a time, and my latest update probably has 40-50 that have been collapsed back into each other...

Which is to say, I would prefer to work sharper, but for the time being seem resigned to trying to pull some focus out of the mist, as it were.

Thanks for filling me in on your working style. I use lots of layers too but not as many as you, more like 10 to 15. I avoid using the blur filter until I am working on the details toward the end of the painting. Anyway it is very interesting to see the way everyone works. Keep going I really like your work.
