hi guys, need your help, lets say i have an interior scene with one window, but the window has a see through curtain, lets say 50% opacity, how do i make the light source from outside go through the curtains and interior? in real world even if theres a curtain, theres still an amount of light coming through? how do i do these with max? my light source is a target direct with vray shadows, and an vray light infront of the window.? any tricks on this? thanks in advance!!

well, you're gonna have to fake the indirect illumination or use global illumination to simulate the light bouncing around the room from the window.

hi nicnac thanks for the reply:) "faking" meaning putting lightsource inside the house pretending that its coming from outside? , so the light source outside is no longer needed right? since its not gonna make it inside the house.

You can turn off receive & cast shadows in the properties dialog for the curtains to get the light into the room (as well as the glass). If there are glazing bars on the window you need to make these seperate objects from the glass (they cast shadows) For your curtains you could also try using a projection map (square spotlight) and play around with near and far attenuation/output etc. Try adding a volumetric light to the environment and set it around 2-3 or lower if you only want a faint dusty room effect. You can also try playing with the mental ray Connection in the material editor (click on volume and try one or other of the shaders. You won't get a 100% correct effect but it can look pretty convincing and it does work with just a single light.
