View Full Version : Dependent Zoom & Centers?
Tumerboy 11-22-2002, 06:30 PM Hey folks, I'm a Lightwave guy, . . . don't give me that look! but I'm trying to get more into Maya. . . For anyone who's played with lightwave, you know that each viewport (each view: side, top, front, perspective) is linked in both the zoom, and it's center. So that your model, in each viewport, will be the same scale, and the viewports will all be centered on the same point. . .
My question, is there anyway to set this up with maya?
I find it really annoying to constantly have to zoom in and out and recenter each viewport all the time, and it would be grand if I could just get them all linked.
Hope you understand what I'm asking. Thanks.

select the object - press f for focus in selected viewport - and F (shift-f) for focus in all viewports

ya, I know how to get it to be centered and such, but I want it to continuously center it, and keep the zoom ratio in all the ports the same. . . don't know how else to describe it
thanks anyway though. . .

i hated the way lightwave did that. used really annoy me all day long.
but as for maya, you might try using set driven key or the connection editor on the cameras to the same result.

interesting idea. . . I don't know if I have the skills to set something like that up,
I was mainly wondering because in Lightwave you always have the option to set it up like Maya, but Maya doesn't seem to give me any option for it. . . .
no biggie, just wondering if it was a check box I was just plain missing someplace. . .
Thanks

gundog: in the display options, you can control the viewport settings. all you needed to do is check independant zoom or center, or whatever else you wanted :)

thanks for the info.
i'm not sure if it had it back then, but the last version of lightwave is used was 5.6.

I think it did. . .
anyway, so no ideas on if Maya has anything like that? (inversed of course?)
Thanks again, I guess I'll have to suck it up and deal with it. . .

windows/general editor/connection editor...
you might want to use the outliner to select the shapenodes.
load the perspshape for the perspective camera in the left panel and load the frontShape for the front camera in the right panel. select Center of Interest on the left and select the Orthographic Width on the right. now their zoom/dolly are linked. repeat for the top and side cameras.

Alright, I've figured out about half of it. . . I think. . .
I goto the outliner, and the connection editor, and I link the perspective center of interest to the other's ortho width, and however I zoom in perspective view updates the others (YAY!)
but I now can't zoom in any other windows. . . that's kinda funky
And I havent' gotten the dolly working. . . what am I missing here?
Ideally, I could zoom and dolly in any window, and it would update the others. . .
Btw GunDog, I REALLY appreciate the help, you rock!

aaah, you're right. unfortunately, i don't know if maya can do bi-directional connections like in 3ds max. maybe someone with more mel experience would be kind enough to script this :)

LOL, it's really not that big of a deal. . . it's just my own personal issue cuz I grew up on Lightwave. . . but, I won't complain if someone DOES script it. . .
Thanks again GunDog
