Seems like a good idea to go in with the intent to sketch, thats the attitude I've taken with it so far also. Doing a volume of quick stuff seems the best way to get used to all the tools, there are so many approaches to try. Standard brush, vs the rakes, vs a flatten brush with a positive modifier (really feels like an additive clay experience, etc). That said the variety isn't imposing, ZB3 is quite comfortable, I might have to take back some snide remarks over UI even :)
It might be easier to see proportional issues if did a screen shot at the end of a session including the front and side ortho (which is fairly easy in ZB; just exit draw, put an ortho front to the left of the canvas, a front in the middle, and then turn persp back on and drop a 3/4 one for a handy screen shot -- a couple clicks, but I find it really helps things become clear looking at the sculpt later).
On the head there are a lot of pieces that look good in isolation that don't form up proportionally. The ear seems a touch long, it lines up at the top of the brow, but it seems to go below the level of the nose -- which is making the lobe feel a bit stretched. The nose itself seems a touch shortened, I'd kind of expect it to go a little longer and have a bit of room for the nose wrinkling muscles (which would de-crowd the eyes). He's pretty thin lipped, but I'd still expect the top lip to protrude a little bit more. The jawline is really solid and strong, and when it gets to the chin it washes out, maybe thinking of the chin as the boxey end of a triangle, and the mouth a cylinder wrapping on top of it would help -- just seems like the base shapes are getting lost in thinking about the surface detail there.
You're already getting some age and character into this, the larger ears, thin lips and puffy eyes all have me thinking of someone worn and fairly elderly. Unify the surface with the structure underneath and it'll be in good shape. Good to see these kind of studies :)

Thanks Kary. The old asian man ref I was sketching from had some bizarre proportions himself!!!:D I've found coming back to the head after a good nights sleep shows all the things I was doing wrong. I'll keep at it. :)

This here is my own puny arm modeled by looking at it in a mirror. A semi-life drawing if you will. It's still majorly WIP, but most of the fun was done in 3dsmax:

Some of your best traditional sketches so far, keep it up! :) The digital has a long way to go, and I think trying a master copy at this point might be really helpful.
Definitely liking these latest traditional studies.
