MechaHateChimp 12-02-2005, 02:35 PM Guess I'll start a sketchbook thread as well. Here's my first: a 20 minute sketch of d&b mogul Goldie.
*UPDATED - worked a little more this afternoon to define some features.

Hi Jesse,
Yes. I usually scan rough sketches into PS then color over them using a standard round brush with medium opacity.

Your really incredible. I love the subtle crackling, almost scale-like quality of Angels skin and wings. I also think you sense of color is superior as shown in the underwater scene. Excellent work man.

great sketches. All are pretty amazing, though pizza guy and mirror are slightly weaker.
The composition in mirror doesn't quite "fit" (though the shaft of light on the water is great), Still it is a really good painting.

MattVogt & dogyears - Thank you for the kind words :)
Rebecca - Glad you liked it :) It didnt come out as I planned but after 2 hours of fiddling, I had to stop. BTW, I am really enjoying your figure drawing workshops. I think out of all the exercises I've been doing now that I am getting back into illustrating, your workshops have helped me out the most. I still feel pretty slow and not nearly as loose with my sketching as I would like to be but I'm definitely sticking with it until I can start knocking stuff out alot quicker. Thanks again for your kind words and inspiration.

Sketch: Samurai Portrait
http://killingcaterpillars.com/temp/images/illustrations/sketches/sketch-samurai.jpg
I bought a book yesterday that contained a huge source of concept art from the last Star Wars movie. While I'm not a big Star Wars fan, I was really blown away by the calibur of work some of the concept artists created for the film. I have been engrossed with the book for the last 24 hours and it inspired me to sketch in pencil again. This is a quick 30 minute sketch which I scanned and worked over lightly in PS. I may convert it to color later down the line. - J

Concept Art - Minotaur
http://killingcaterpillars.com/temp/images/illustrations/new/minotaur.jpg
intruiging concept. Also quite unusual to make a minotaur with a male cow's head rather than a giant bull/bisonlike head.
I wonder though if the proportion relationship between head and torso works well. I have been staring at it for quite a time (I love your textures all over the place!). I just can't tell - it definitely conveys the awkward feeling of encountering something completely alien to humanity. Also the expression on the minotaur's face is just incredible. The sadness of a prisoner's life in the maze of crete comes to mind.
*takes another long look*
No, it's just perfect as it is. The weak and sad head on that muscular body actually supports the idea of the hidden-away, sad and dangerous half-goddish misfit.
A-maze-ing piece...harhar:scream:

Thanks Mr. Mu :)
Im with you on the proportion fo the head to body.... I was looking at it in a smaller thumbnail view and the head seems a bit larger. I may redo the entire image later down the line though. The sketch I started with was very rough so I tend to sacrifice detail for speed. I may actually start with a completed pencil sketch before I bring it in to PS from now on.
