View Full Version : 3dSmax day 1----2
Jeffg 02-27-2002, 07:56 PM So I decided to learn 3dSMax. I love cut scenes and animation and such so I figure what the heck.
Day one started off at work doing alot of research(my job is boring and I gotta lot of free time) What I was looking for was a tutorial or guide that is tailor'd to the fresh newb that I am. I found a good link that explains the fundimentials
-->>> http://www.webreference.com/3d/indexa.html
This site gave me a good idea of 3d itself.
After reading that I went to other sites that had alot of "How To" stuff. Which I really don't like because it's not really learning. Its kinda like....click here, drag here, click here, drag here.. DONE!
I don't learn well from those but they are great for ideas and such. So I tried a little freestyle action. First thing that I notice was getting used to the views. Taking something and turning it or monuvering around it was tough. On to my first object. I made a cone. Looks cool in the prespective view.. now what. I made a cylindar and placed it undeneath the cone. Cool I got a little ship now. I then see the animation button at the bottom so now I got my ship taking off from the ground. I then discover that I can place a smoke trail from the bottom of the cylindar. Cool... well all in all that took me about 4 hours. I had a blast my first day out. After I get done posting this its off to the book store for more reading reading reading. Also thanks to everyone who post here you have provided me with alot of great referances to look upon... peace out and I hope to post something in the next 3 months or so =)

Thats great that you've started with 3dsmax, the really fun part begins once you've learned more about the tools, materials and light.
Check this site for some good materials and light lessons

3D Studio Max Fundamentals and 3D Studio Max Magic are pretty good resources. Fundamentals is more of a break-down bible and Magic is icing on the cake...
There are a lot of good resources on the web, but by finding CG talk, you're already on the right track

I'm learning MAX also, for about (+/-) 4 months now...
I'm also looking for better techniques and ways to learn. Now I'm kinda like hmmmm, .., "what's that button?", *click*, 3damn, my scene is tottaly messed up now!!!".
But I believe that's the best way to learn it. Just see for yourself and learn out of your faults. Then when u think u got the basics of it and understand all the terms (don't know if this is eng.?), use the book. You'll learn much more, much faster!

WOW what a day yesterday. I learned alot. Spent about 7 hours after work on the PC learning. I went through about 300 pages in my book. I learn about most of the buttons, shape, and splines, even dabbled into animation a bit. (whew) there is so much to learn though. I learned about arry's and modifiers. I must say its very cool and I'm eger and excited to get better.
I got a couple quick question, granted this must be basic for most but remember this is day 3 for me.
1) After makeing a spline or line, what are steps to get that attached to another shape. The book kinda covered this but not to the detail I needed. Example of this would be; say I make a tree trunk and I want to attach a branch.
2) With a model or shape already made what are the step to draw a line off that model and what are the best views to do this in. Example of this would be last night I made a small space ship and when trying to draw in the fins on the side I had one heck of a time. What I ended up doing was drawing the line away from my model then placed an "extrude" modifier on it then just shoved it into the model so it looked like it was in the right place.
Maybe this is not the best way to model, if not please let me know. I open to anything anyone has to say. Thanks a million for everyone's help.

1. just remember that 3 or 4 verts make a poly so just make a space on your object (most likley with more than 4 verts so its a blank space in your object then place the object to be sowed in and 'attach' the objects to eachother and connect the splines to 'sow' it in... (that's about as simple as i can put it.)
2. sounds like polyobject is what you need in this case (if its not polyobject convert it to polyobject and play with extruding faces)...and also any poly can be 'cut' to get the shape you want to extrude...

The book 3ds max 4 Media Animation is also very good. Nice realworld projects and complete explanations as if it were your job to complete the animation for the client or co-worker.

I'd also say read the inprogram help (F1), they have everything you could want to know about what certain buttons and functions do.
