View Full Version : mr4Maya toon shader
dwalden74 11-22-2002, 09:00 AM Anyone know if mental ray for Maya 1.5 has a good standard toon shader built in? Currently Iīm working on a project where weīre animating in Soft3D and rendering out with the built-in mental ray toon shader...works very well. Is this available with mr4Maya? So far the toon shaders Iīve seen for Maya have been rather dissappointing, especially in dealing with things like inkline thickness and geometry intersections. The mr toon shader in Soft3D is indeed very cool.

i think at this time there is no toon shader for Mr15 someone
have to convert the xsi one to maya :)

maybe this thread can help you get started - http://www.highend3d.com/boards/showflat.php?Cat=1,2&Board=MayaMR&Number=128305&page=1&view=collapsed&sb=5&o=0&fpart=

hey thanks stunndman...at least itīs a start (and I have something to play with over the weekend :) ) A good toon shader in mr4Maya is a must!

maya 4.5 does have a built in toon shader...
its called the Ramp Shader... doesn't MR support the standard Maya shaders?

That ramp shader is pretty decent for the actual toon effect but it doesn't make very good ink outlines. Maybe i just haven't played around w/ it enough.
you can also use custom mr shaders in maya.
so, if its not a softimage specific thing, you should be able to use it with mr for maya.

Try using an edge detection filter in post. You may end up having a seperate color render and a "normal" render to get the lines from.

Edge detection technique will simply not cut it. What if you want an inkline where 2 pieces of geometry intersect? What if one object is in front of another object and you want an inkline there? The mr toon shader in Soft3D is perfect for these kinsd of things.
(itīs probably even better than Inkworks, as people have told me that inkworks cannot create an inkline at geometry intersections).
Hey Stunndman- I looked through that thread you posted(thanks!), however I have the impression that it was written for Maya4mr 1.0, and not 1.5...I couldnīt even find a "contour" setting in mr material settings. Then again, given the fact that mr4Maya 1.5 has f*cked up my render globals window, it wouldnīt surprise me to find further instabilities in it. OK, OK I didnīt have so much time this weekend to investigate it...
Could someone still explain how to create a toon shader with mr4Maya 1.5 shaders? Should be easy to script it once I know what is connected to what.

Unless you have some extensive programming experiance from what I know writing a MR Shader is like writing a RenderMan shader.....pretty difficult......:D
no, mr shader writing is much more c++ style ...renderman is more like c, which is a bit easier to do +]
also, inkworks can render lines at intersections .... but just when u use nurbs.

Iīm not talking about writing a custom toon shader in mental ray. I mean using the mr nodes already available and automating the creation of a toon shader with a MEL script (mental ray already has the "toon" nodes necessary, theyīre just not connected together in one pre-built shader, at least not in mental ray for Maya). This should be very simple to do, I just donīt have the time lately to look into all this. If someone has already done this in mr4Maya 1.5, it would be cool if they simply posted the steps necessary.

Dohhh! You blew my cover! :wip: You wouldnīt happen to have a mr4Maya 1.5 toon shader lying around somewhere???

David
nah, sorry.
my only toonshader experience is with inkworks ...
hey,but also check out these >

the i like the toonshader better than inkworks.
