Title: Megalopolis
Name: Daniel Rutter
Country: USA
Software: Photoshop

Hi Everyone,

First time posting here. This is a matte painting of a future high rise in which workers live on the lower floors, work on the upper. Based on old Kowloon city in Hong Kong. Rough geometry built in Electric Image, painted over in Photoshop. Comments and crits welcome.

Thanks,

Dan

Looks great, I really like it.

Very believable and realistic, but not just in the photorealistic painting, but by it being dirty and not beautiful and idealistic.

Seeing the 'breakdown' made me appreciate this even more.

Great work - five stars.

You are correct my friend. Check out the breakdown on page one to see the photographic elements.

EDIT: Sorry everyone, if this crosses some 2D/3D boundary. It seems that matte shots are kinda blurring the line between the two.

Sorry, I wasn't trying to put you down. This is pretty impressive stuff, and besides... pro's know that it doesn't matter how you get it done. What matters is that you get it done. And your technique is a common one.

I was just confused because you said that it was based on a city in hong kong.

Take care

Very well done, love the form and the concept. I must say though, it is very disturbing. It reminds me of a project I was working on a year ago. The idea of a harsh and futuristic city that had become very industrial and work oriented in nature, turning all of life to work, and exploring how even "sustainabilty" could go wrong. Mine was much more harsh than this, but unfortunatly I don't have any images because a professor screwed up the project before it was barely off the ground by trying to overthink and work it rathen than just letting it be!!! But that is an off subject rant.

Again, great form, and very provocative (in a distrubing way)

Great job man, it's a nice piece of work. Constructively I'd say the only thing I noticed was the 3d element painted over. It looks great , it just seems like it's a little flat on the backside. If there was a little more rim or lighting adjustment or somthing on the centerpiece, I think it would really sell the shot. Totally on the production side though. As a personal piece, or otherwise, it's easily bitchin' .

I usually don't like such mixing of techniques (2D, 3D and photo), but I must admit that this one is very good after all. Congratulations!Perhaps you should insert the background photograph slightly higher as it seems that the horizon of the 3D scene does not exactly match the horizon of the photograph. I might be wrong, though...

Excellent work Dan! The level of detail makes my head spin. That must have been a LOT of work.

Also, great to see images from other Electric Image users here as well. I'll have to get the nerve to post one some day. :hmm:

Some comment on the horizon and perspective mentioned earlier:

The horizon is to low and there is something funny about the perspective when you look at the buildings... Not quite sure what causes this problem.

Take a look: a lot of lines, but a lot of them never cross on the same spot.

...But on thing: The designs are very nice!

Beautiful work. I aspire to being able to create images like that.

I posted those photographs of Kowloon years ago precisely so that folks could use them as reference, and I'm thrilled that someone has discovered them.

Taking those pictures was incredibly difficult and not entirely safe, so I'm kind of attached to getting credit for them.

Dude, I retroactively give you permission to repost my images of Kowloon in this article, and also to use the images in any reprints of this article in any media. But please give me a credit in references at the end of your article.

Thanks for your consideration,

These photos were taken on a trip to Hong Kong in 1989. I misunderstood which bus to ride and wound up deep in the heart of Kowloon. I ended up spending exactly 24 hours in the area without getting any sleep. I wish I had taken some photos during the night, but the rough environs were making me nervous. Kowloon of course no longer exists as pictured here.

Hey Nick,

Thanks very much for the permission -it's very kind and generous of you. I should've sought you out beforehand but got caught up in finishing the tutorial. Fantastic images -I'd love to hear the story some time about the shooting of them.

I saw this coffee table book about three years ago about old Kowloon which was just photographs -amazing stuff but I haven't found it since. Are you familiar with it?

Dan

EDIT: I contacted Paul and asked that you be credited at the end of the tutorial.

Hi Everyone,

Thanks for the comments. First a correction: the old kowloon walled city was torn down in 1992, not the mid seventies. I found that information in a book called:

City of Darkness: Life in Kowloon Walled City.

It's a fantastic resource but too pricey for me. It's at amazon.

Even though you work on this matte is great...
the idea of "high rise in which workers live on the lower floors, work on the upper"
is counter-productive in architectural and design terms.

though... you painted the future so what that hell i know about the future :P
