View Full Version : Still: Silver Surfer: Birth
Kryptochan 11-22-2002, 04:45 AM Hello all! This still is a depiction of the origin of the Silver Surfer. All effects are done using the FX Tree for compositing. Models are all suddivisional. Background was created using legacy night shader. The main inspiration for this image was the tragic passing of John Buscema whose works include the first volume of the "The Silver Surfer" as well as work on "The Essential Silver Surfer" trade paperback. He will be missed. Let me know what you guys think?

this is cool... :) the anatomy is nicely done and I especially love the way you posed his left arm! His fingers look good from here. The Surfer looks like he's gonna tip over any second though... and he's a little too green/blue for me... not silver enuf...
Galactus's hand looks a little detatched from the scene too... still, it's better than anything I could do in 3D! so congrats! How long did it take for you to do this?

Actually this was a really quick project. The surfer model is taken from a preexisting work of mine I just tweaked his muscle definition more to get the desired effect I was after. The hand and the board I spent about a day modeling those out and figuring out legacy night shader for the background. Yeah his pose is highly idealized hes alot more stable in other shots but I went with the most dramatic. The color issue has been a big debate, I agree with you about the color, but went with my buddies as they like this version better. The hand is blurred to give the effect of depth because in actuality the surfer would be about the size of one of galactus fingers. I wanted to reflect how massive galactus actually is. But if this is not working let me know guys? Decided to do this because I was stunned after learning of Johns passing, been out of comics a while and had not heard... very sad indeed.

I think it's a great pose, the colours on the Surfer are good too, but the whole image needs more contrast so that the Surfer glows against the glove. There's alot of grey in it as it is now. Adding something to the starfield might spice it up a bit too.
As soon as I saw your pic, I turned on the tv and the Silver Surfer animated series came on. Must be a sign...

For fun made this composition, the nebula effect was created in xsi with the help of Thomas Groppi's tutorial.

the character geometry looks great !
I am not too sure about the background, though, there is too much overall noise right now, maybe you can work a bit on the composition (place a couple of planets, give it more depth). And what is that red hand thing ? Lacks a bit of definition IMHO...
The surfer looks nicely silvery and chromey, but in space, light usually comes from one direction (high contrast, black shadows), there is no 'diffuse light' in space. Maybe you can have a distant sun as the main light source (could enhance the composition, too) and just add a couple of very faint lights to show his sillhouette (or just make him glow).
Are you working on x-men3 or something ? :D
