View Full Version : wire fencing
satanatron 11-22-2002, 12:05 AM does anyone know of a good technique for constructing a wire fence? One of the diagonal, criss-crossing types used for security etc....
I'm using 4.2.....

If you actually want to model the mesh, I would first create a whole lot of splines in a vector editing program like Illustrator. Once you have your mesh created, I'd import it & either make the splines renderable or loft small circles to turn it into wire.
The only downside to that is the illustrator file would be 2d, so the wires would actually pass through each other. If you want a wire fence you can get really close to, I'd model the splines in Max & use your array tools to generate a whole mesh of them...
remember though, dont model unless you actually need to - would a plane with an opacity map work as well?

yeah depends on what the fences purpose is??
if it requiers alot of detail then i would use splines and model a few links and clone them(this is if your gonna be up so close you see them criss crossing)
otherwise i would use plane with opocity maps to cut down on poly count and keep the view port and render times speedy

I posted a similar question in the texturing forum, but how could you make the illusion of a wire fence, just with a simple (greyscale for instance) map with opacity map ? I tried various patterns with black on white and white on black from 1px small to various sizes, but it never gives me the right illusion.
In other words: what's a good trick if you want to model a whole fence on a plane, to keep your poly count low. (Like with a race sim/game, you'd race at high speed along the fence anyway).

This is the basic element, without any additional details. I use this to form a whole grandstand, by cloning the structure without the fence or with a back fencing for the upper stand (to prevent people from falling off ;)
I get the idea that my fence pattern is far too small, but aside of that it's difficult to judge from a quick render if the pattern (either black, white or any other color) is visible enough and doesn't blurr too much into a solid, transparent area.
Advice more than welcome ofcourse :)
