Hi....Zhuzhu...
Paintings are great as usual.....really like the Burne Hogarth studies....I had him for a teacher
years ago....he used to work BIG alot....LIFE SIZE, AND BIGGER THAN LIFE..used conte crayon on BIG sheets of newsprint...standing at arms length away from the paper surface, and using the side of the crayon, he got alot of energy into the figures, by using his shoulder muscle while drawing.
You might want to give this a try...he worked really fast, and with a lot of energy...showed up in his works....I think you would be great at this , and working big has it's own rewards...:)
TAKE CARE
Glenn
Nice studies Zhuzhu; I agree with Glenn about trying out the big drawings. In the academy where am studying now, they draw HUUUUUUUUUUUUUGE. I mean I have to stand on a stool to paint; It is quite overwhelming for me since am quite short; But I am beginning to like it. Hehehe, not that you need any tips from me ;)

SpiritDreamer:cool~! thanks for share that~! i have used large paper often before i know digital. it was great for sure. but i only have a A4 scaner right now, so used the sketchbook.
Queensoul:thanks~! i will try, maybe i need a better DC later. but sometime, i think draw on a smaller paper will be a good challenge.

zhuzhu,
I really love the transparent feel of a lot of your paintings. This last one is really dreamlike- it's like looking out through a glared window, or a bright day when the sun fills your eyes. Very nice.
BTW, thanks for your complement earlier about my Chinese!! (lol)

Hi.....Zhuzhu..
I like the effects your getting in these latest city scapes...kind of ghostly feel to them..captured with light and shadow...NICE...:)
If you ever decide to work lifesize again.. on those Hogarth studies,..you can always take a picture of them like Rebecca does, and then scan them in...just a thought.
Keep going,...I am really enjoying your work...GREAT way to wake up in the morning...enjoying your colors, and atmosphere's...

Amazing how you create such scenes with such few brushstrokes. And the use of colors is always great in your peaces. Are you planning to finish any of these "Malena" peaces? To make it more than a speedpaint?
And I was just thinking how any of these "Malena" peaces would look done with a pencil...Pencil! Your pencilwork rocks, the lines... *flies away*
zhuzhu
09-14-2006, 03:09 AM
razz:thanks, all "Malena" painting is overpainting from last version. for example, "Malena 11" is overpaint from "Malena 10", it was save time and help a lot. all my works post here are finish work for sure, whatever detailing work or speedpaint. pencil for "Malena" drawing? haha, sounds fun, maybe try later , but i like use shapes for scenes painting.
here is a small WIP, hope it useful to get my point.

I just wanted to say that your work inspires me a lot and is just mind blowing. I love the way you handle the brush tool. the simplicity. it looks like you'r just playing with the tool and still get these stunning resaults. amazing man. i'll be keeping my eye on this thread.
PS. i don't know if enyone already told you this but about the video tutorial and slowing down our system. yes that does happen and if you don't have a powerfull machine there is not much you can do about the besides making the resolution of your screen smaller i guess. You could try Open Canves. this application has the function that enables you to record exactly what you draw/brush. it's kind of awesome. you should definitely try it.

Hey zhu, awesome work as always.
And inspiring as always.
As for posting the OC files, some of us love it :) so thanks :)
SO dont be discouraged, i hadnt used the program before you posted the head killer files, but they were interesting.
I think itd be real interesting if someone was doing a speedpaint, not copying a ref image, but watching a skilled artist go through their process can be quite revealing and informative.
Looking forward to seeing you in the torso's workshop :D

That last sketchbook page is great. Were those from life?
I'd love to know some of the resources and methods you use to study anatomy. I aspire to have that kind of drawing skill.
Your thread is a pleasure to look at. If you could, let us know how you got so good :)
Obviously part of it is that you draw constantly. Keep up the inspiring work.

To be a little cheeky... what are the odds of getting a wpe for the likes of the avil guy head sketch at the top of this page.
I think videos like that can be so interesting when the artist is making up the drawingout of their head!

F**kin amazing! It seems you are very fluid in working with a tablet, it looks like its just the same as working with a pencil and paper for you. Is it because you just have a lot of experience with a tablet or do you have really high end one?

michael-olszak: thanks man, that " monster" 's background was used a texture image as underpaint.
snowkiwi: thanks a lot~!
Intervain: thanks, i always start with simpy colors, and get them more rich.just like start with big shape, and find some details.
CgIcecube: thanks, i have wrote 2 books about digital painting, but all Chinese version.
rblitz7: thanks, i think whatever pencils or tablet, they are just tools for drawing.

Wow! I'm impressed by the line quality you manage to get, even with a Wacom. Like in the sketch you had with the dancing couple. Some really nice, sweepy and precise lines...
Personally I still struggle with the transition from Analog to Digital. I guess it's a hand / eye coordination thing (Wish I could afford a Cintiq). But I guess it's also a training thing, and since I do 3D work most of the time I don't get enough practise...
Anyways, your work is very impressive, both the amount and quality! :)
BTW those Open Canvas "replays" was really cool!

I want to ask you one question.
Do you use any kind of refference for your works, let's say the blue winged girl?
Or is all from your head?
great works. I love them all.
Zhuzhu, you have just earned another fan, do not worry I wont be too loud at cheering at your art exhibitions :D

Zhu...it's amazing what you are capable of. And you don't stop doing it. It's not common to see such skills in the digital world. It's a shame that you are so low profile...now that I know this thread exists, I'll visit it continuously.
My respect!
Hey Zhu, do you have any Self-portraits done in Digital? I am doing a University project where I will be painting self-portraits, and I wanted to show examples of what Digital is capable of. I have listed some of the masters in Oils, but thats not enough in my opinion. And your work is the best I have seen (and I have seen some astounding things both here and at CA.org). If you have posted one already, could you link it please? This thread is quite large (I may have found one if it exists when you reply).
EDIT:
Zhu, you mentioned George B. Bridman's book's, there are so many, which would you recommend I buy first? I have been studying Hogarths for some time, and need a little change, so i know anatomy in general, but not fully yet.

Absolutely love your humor, man!

and the way you make the brain assemble all the puzzlepieces with those clear brushstrokes that you don't hide. Hi Zhu,
been silently but conistently following your work here...
Jawdropping productivity and great technique too ! (with good sence of aesthetic, which imho is sooo important, even more than the analogies/proportions...)
Must say I'm a fan of Bridgmans book too, with the forms and masses point of view, seing the object as 3D..grew up with them from my fathers stock..
Specially liked your work in the previous page, with the funny character, the caricatures and the Dante profiles.
What I find that might be interesting, especially for the aspiring artists here, is if you doodle away using Painter, to record a script of each artpiece, which you can then make into a animation of proccess, or just upload the script itself, and whoever whishes could run it in Painter and learn quite a lot!
Cheers

i just used Photoshop default hard round brush and airbrush, for basic shapes, i set the brush opacity to 100%. for details, set 30%-70%. at last, apply sharpen filter or use sharpen tool to make the shape edges strongger.
