zhuzhu 06-03-2006, 11:49 AM How much time does it take you to do these, Zhuzhu? I'm not going to ask how do you make them look so awesome, because that's a thing one has to learn and it needs lots of practise.
I really like the variety of colors and how they "combine" with each other and how it defines the form greatly and the mood of every one of your wc sketches and also the sketchines of it and...aah, i could go here all day :)
Also, I wanted to read your watercolor painting tutorial, but the images jus won't show up. Any suggestions what to do?
for how many times? it's hard to say, but i like do it quickly (maybe half an hour), almost colorize once then finish. i'd like to used the "wet-in-wet" technique,to blend color more quick and get waterly looking.
here's WC today:

and some WIP:

http://img91.imageshack.us/img91/1786/workspace4mu.jpg
the "Gum Arabic colution"
i'd like to used "Gum Arabic colution" to wash my brush with pure water when start colorize. it will makes more sharpen and clean color edges.used a little bit once just enough. this little tip has work for me all the time.
http://img95.imageshack.us/img95/5503/gac4dj.jpg
watercolor drawing should be more fresh and vivid, so never too much. i should stop in the wip version, dammmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm...

Zhu!
this is awesome man - as always, love the colours - gives so much dimension to the few strokes you have. Using watercolour leaves that vivid rims around strokes - which is something that I had until now considered a con. Only now do I see it can be used to one's advantage - it's not about how the medium works for you, it's about how you work with the medium. Awesome dumbfoundnig madly inspiring stuff,
Thanx for sharing man - got me psyched and inspired.
cheers

Beautiful Watercolour works. I bought a collection of brushes, paper, and paints, and also some books so i hope to also try it out!
Is that a putter rubber on the end of that pencil?

That is dumbfounding zhuzhu. What I like most is how you've painted the tablecloth on the left side of the painting (her right side). And the rose. And Emmie. And her dress. And everything else.
You may be a ladykiller, but you also have a nack for painting killer ladies;). Muchthanx for sharing - keep killing!

Which image can't you see, that come up with a red 'x'? That usually means that either the link is broken or there is some censorship going on....let me know where the red 'x' pictures are located on the CGTalk site - like what page number or the post number and I can send you direct links to the pictures cause they are all on the web hosted on my site. Then we can see where the problem lies - maybe....

CgIcecube:thank you. i said that VALUE was important than colors, it means if you can ctrl the VALUE range right, so whatever colors used just be fine. some masters have told us: a good painting also as a good sketch.
here's the demo, hope you can get my point.

hoho~~~ reply so fast~! man. i used the basic Oil Pastels>Chunky Oil Pastel 30. open the Brush Controls palettes. in General palette, change the Method to Drip, change the Subcategory to Hard Drip. then you will get amazing oily brushstroke looking, that feels like use the fresh oils. and, choice the Chalks>Square Chalk, with some paper textures that you like, for the background or somewhere.

I personnally wouldn't mind buying it as an e-book, in pdf format. If you wanted to translate it to english, if your not confident in your english skill, you could ask Rebecca or someone to check it, her sentences always flow. But you could set up a website and people could purchase it online...

there is a nice, soft, light source in your marble paintings....makes it feel real. very lovely work. i watch and learn.

It is interesting to see how you paint in directions following the planes of the head, like in 3d. I guess that is what gives your paintings such dimension, the strokes follow the planes and curves of the head.

hey zhuzhu,
great work you've done. I was wondering how exactly you paint to get this style!
Looking at it closely makes me think it's done with much time and patience because everything is so clean.
care to give a little hint?

This helped me the most! I guess i knew that, but i couldn't put my finger on it - is a weird sensation! :)
CgIcecube:thank you. i said that VALUE was important than colors, it means if you can ctrl the VALUE range right, so whatever colors used just be fine. some masters have told us: a good painting also as a good sketch.
here's the demo, hope you can get my point.
http://img88.imageshack.us/img88/9194/bashful1ge.jpg
this is how i get start drawing, start with big rough shapes, but capture the basic VALUE.

aah, zhu.. I never know whether to run away weeping whenever I come to this thread, or to go and grab the nearest art implement and start studying anything in range. Your stuff is, as ever, mind blowing. Do you have any traditional media, particularly oil works on line anywhere? I think I may have seen some watercolours.. but then your digital watercolour is so convincing it may not have been traditional. I'm amazed at how oil-like your digital stuff is and would like to know if you've done much in the way of oil painting.

i've been watching u for some time.. really inspiring work... i love the watercolors and the studies after the old masters.. and your sketchbook is good.. but i think u should slow down with working from bridgman etc... and do some lifedrawings.. just my humble opinion..

machu:thank you~! bridgman study just for the fundamentals of anatomy, not as finish work to show off. it was helpful when you meet real figure model. i have not study artistic anatomy when i at school before, so it's time to make up. lifedrawing is good idea, but you should have time to go outside or engage model. right now, i have no time to do that.and it is Summer now, i'd like to go out and do some lifedrawing sketch, but the weather is damm hot in Shanghai right now~! the last one head can be more "smooth", but i like to see how structure and basic volume it is.

i used the basic Oil Pastels>Chunky Oil Pastel 30. open the Brush Controls palettes. in General palette, change the Method to Drip, change the Subcategory to Hard Drip. then you will get amazing oily brushstroke looking. and, choice the Chalks>Square Chalk, with some paper textures that you like, for the background or somewhere.

Amazing stuff man! You must be using painter 9 I guess because I have never seen the drip settings in painter 8. Maybe I just missed it. You are an inspiration dude, I wish I could draw/paint this much.

se7en-z3r0: Painter 8 has the "drip" setting, CTRL+B open the Brush Creator , in General ,then you will see the Method and Subcategory setting, choice Drip and Hard Drip.

The sketches, the PAINTING...wow! I mean...wow!!! The lines in your drawings are amazing. Superb work!
Are you using wax-based prismacolor pencils? May I ask what is the difference between them and the graphite ones? I was thinking of buying some, but to do this I would have to order them and blah blah and it would cost me pretty much for a pencil.

Your Entry is missed at the Awakening the Sleeping Giant workshop!:)! Great study of malena shot ,reminds me of Craig Mullins!
But they are still wax pencils :) I was wondering what is the difference between them and the graphite pencils? Speaking about the drawing with them. You do amazing stuff with the both ones so it's hard to tell for myself.

Hi..Zhuzhu..:)
MAYBE...just use the softener brush...tinting section...painter # 9....her neck line, and maybe top of her outside shoulder, look a little hard at the moment,...causing a little flatness in the atmospheric effect you have achieved...just a thought that might be worth trying, on a seperate version of course...:)

Hi....Zhuzhu....:) ....LOOK BETTER ? .....Not my call...your painting...:scream:
I think it looks great, the size, and the way it is, in the verson you have on your portfollio page...don't know how big of a version the judges look at , when they do their judging..
The difference between the softener brush in painter, and an airbrush, is you don't lose the edge you are softening with the softener brush, like you do with the airbrush....the softener brush, just softens, without changing the colors that are in place along the edge, to start with.
GOOD LUCK with whatever you decide on....Zhuzhu....you deserve it.... :)

Hi again Zhu. With or without ref it is simply marvelous. I would go for a prize, maybe like 'character in repose' or something. My opinion is, the colors in the first one are perfect. But in the first picture we can see all the colors together with the whole picture.
It looks like in the last pic, all the colors are more contrasted. I think if we could see the whole picture we can judge better if the contrasted colors look better in the newer image. But the clearer face details, I think are better in the last one. Good luck in the Expose' Zhu.
