awesome stuff. really realistically portrayed.

one question. why did they do those two soldiers in cg? seems like they could've just used actors. i was expecting them to get hit by the vehicles that were being thrown.

oh well, regardless, that was great.

So, what was this short about? Really nice VFX in there but I didn't get the story. Some SA insider-gag?

I thought the situation in SA was bad enough without any aliens!

Interesting piece from a political view i think, it's like apartheid all over again.

We do have aliens in SA, it's what we call illegal immigrants from Mozambique, Zimbabwe and any other country they come from via any illegal route.

It's a rather big problem, what you see happening with these "aliens" is what actually happens here with the illegal immigrants. When they are walking in the townships interviweing people they probably ask them about what they think of illegal aliens and they give their answer. Saw something similar done with a Discreet cleaner advert except it was funny.

I understood that part but was confused by other narrative details like why the aliens were both clothed in tatters and treated like outcasts and yet had hitech biosuits or why they couldn't get on their motherships and fly off despite them sucking energy off powerplants...
In other words, I couldn't make out what those analogies meant compared to SA's current "aliens".

Would someone be so kind as to convert that into .DIVX or .WMV for me?

Our idiot server policy has MOVs and AVIs blocked for download.
(Another problem with living in S.A. is that our so-called "broadband" is controlled by a monopoly, and as a result we pay exorbitant fees for a capped line. Most expensive in the world I'm told.)

@ Wiro - Sorry bud can't help you there. Not sure on the actuall reasoning, and could only speculate. Hopefully one of the guys that worked on it can elaborate for all of us.

@ psychoscorpic - You are right we are one of the most expensive. I had an email that worked out if you had to download 100 gigs it would work out cheaper and faster to fly to Hong Kong return and download it from an internet cafe at the airport!

Wow:thumbsup:.... just wow. Looks and feels real. You could most likely fool people that this was real like with War of the Worlds radio broadcast back then. Why are most movies with cg and real actors not as well combined like this movie? Well done. I hope they continue with great success and quality in their future work.:) We need more like this.

I've actually been pretty impressed with Telkom lately. I had my new line installed 2 days after I called. OK-So its not lightning fast....but its an improvement over the fortnight instalations they were doing not to long ago!

I'll set the download for this overnight....time to use up all my spare bandwidth! :)

Fede-I also got that mail. Its insane! They fail to add in the time it would take you to go to home affairs and get your passport lost at least twice. :)

Downloaded it-and I have to say that it was AMAZING. I loved the ID4 style shots over JHB.

Was hoping to see some CG Aliens tho (budget?), and some cooler, less 'boxy' looking Bio Suits-but thats just a style thing. Excellent work tho. Amazing stuff as always!

Really nice stuff again from Neill Blomkamp and co. Really nice feel and concept.

As a guest worker in South Africa, I was unaware of how things were, not necessarily 'dangerous' but not like the US or UK or Europe. There was some absolutely freightening out takes showing the alien ( Jason ) and the crew trying to get footage in the Soweto townships of frightend crowds without any support staff...... really brave filmaking.

My favourite bit is Charlto as the gung-ho helicopter pilot. Having worked with him I am sure Leigh can appriciate the humor.

Its easy to get footage of frightened crowds in Soweto. Just run in there and shout "The 2010 worldcup is cancelled!".

. . . and they have the gall to use the catchphrase "the evolution of broadband" in their new advertising campaign!

Gaaak!

(OK, So compared to the finger-blistering speeds I enjoyed for a month at my brother-in-law's pad in Toronto, maybe we are still evolving here. Everyone else is already out the organic soup and sporting a tan, but Hey! We're (still) evolving.)

Oh well. At least S.A. is doing well as a filming location spot (if you ignore the loss of the latest Bond movie)

UPDATE:
Charlize next Bond girl?

London - South African born actress Charlize Theron is reportedly being lined up as a Bond girl in the new 007 movie. She has been offered a deal to star alongside Daniel Craig in a remake of Casino Royale, reports the Mirror.

The South African-born star is said to be British director Martin Campbell's first choice. Charlize would be following in the footsteps of the likes of Halle Berry, Teri Hatcher, Britt Ekland and Ursula Andress.

She won a Best Actress Academy award for her stunning portrayal of real-life US serial killer Aileen Wuornos in the 2003 movie Monster.

The Mirror's source said: "She is glamorous but she is also a brilliant actress. It would be quite a coup to have an Oscar-winner as the female lead." - Ananova.com

I was also confused by that part. Seems strange, especially as it seems that they just arrived, and already they're bums on the street!

Really awesome stuff! But when you say "from the citroen transformer guys", do you mean The Embassy worked on the vfx for this? Because I didn't see them in the credits?

Quoted for agreement, I felt the overall compositing was done very well, it looked very believable, I felt the design of the bio suits were a little junky, but thats just being nit picky on my part. Really good job though.

Neill has directed commercials for the Embassy including Citroen. This is just one of his many side projects. I wouldn't be surprised if 90% of the CG and comp is his own. I don't think this was a direct Embassy project.
