I am coming from an XSI and Max background and using smooth proxy for my models like turbosmooth or meshsmooth. You can set your iterations to be different when you render so that you can work in low rez and have it automatically renderin it with more iterations at render time.

I would like to have it render the smoothed object at render time at level 2 and work/animate on the proxy object.

Is there a way to set the iterations for rendering like in XSI and Max or do I have to turn layers on and off before rendering? Seems like an extra step and that I would have to save the smooth model with the file making it much larger than necessary.

Yeah I'm pretty sure you can do it by sticking in a mel script in the render options.. not sure how maybe someone will post an answer on it, I'd like to know myself

If u scroll down in the render globals there is a field where u can put in a prerender mel script.... thats the place to go... just put the right mel command in there and voilaz...

hope that helps

if you're rendering with mentalray, select your shape and then run Window>Rendering Editors>mentalray>Aproximation Editor> press the Create button next to Sbds Aprox and then press Edit to change the subdivision algoritghm settings.

using this method won't lead to the same results as the usual Poly Smooth does, instead the render will look as if you converted the polygons to sbds.

cheers
