View Full Version : Mental ray and Maxwell "stimulation"?
ghostlake114 11-28-2005, 02:35 PM Hi all
---
First, I want to talk about Maxwell, a standalone render engine that come up nearly and have plugin for a lot of 3D Program, include Maya
More info about Maxwell here: Maxwellrender.com
--------
You know, Maxwell, they inform that they base on physic of real light.. and the fact they do is really simple as life. There are two main part in maxwell render:
1. Camera: base on photography with real photo machine: shutter, ect...
2. Light emiter: Base on real light physic, only ONE light emiter can be a real physic light
-------
With that construct, learning Maxwell is not so hard and setting scene with Maxwell is so easy, only one or two click
--------
What I want to talk here is a maxwell "stimulation" for mental ray: So, If it possible for us or mental image to write a LIGHT SHADER that can act as the light emiter in maxwell.
-------
I do not know If this is a crazy think or not... But Maxwell light emitter is a SHADER, and I myseft think It could be written in mental ray as a shader too
--------
Hope anyone in mental image drop here and see my topic :scream: :scream: :applause:

In MR, it is exactly the way as you describe it. One can write a light shader that defines the emission of light into a scene. Check the docs of MR to see some examples.

isn't the same, the maxwell emitters aren't area lights, this mean u can add it without slow down the rendertimes, but the maxwell emitters are a part of an entire system, it's impossible (right now) to make something similar in mr, correct me if i'm wrong
this is an awesome example

Essentially they are the same. The difference is how the lighting distribution is calculated. Maxwell is a path tracer, MR uses other techniques. The emitters in Maxwell can be dubbed area lights and are pretty close to what you get with geometry lights in MR.

mmm i'm not so sure, for example, with the mr geometry light u can produce caustics effects (without photons)? i dont think, the maxwell emitters are more similar to the geometry with incandescence in mr

An area light and a object with high incandecence are also kind of the same. The difference is how they are sampled. Using final gather,, where the envidonment of a pixel to shade is integrated, a high incandecence object just happens to be a part of the environment. In case of an area light, not the complete envionment is sampled but just the area covered by the area light.

Quite not get much understanding, but as I know... light emitter is a shader to an object ... so, any problem when doing that kind of shader in MR?
