Title: Alice
Name: Natascha Roeoesli
Country: Switzerland
Software: Photoshop
I actually didn't want to post this because after working on it way over my time I came to almost hate this piece.
But I do post it because I owe thanks to the people in the 2D WIP Forum who pushed me through this.
I know it does have quite a few flaws but I have the deadline approaching and my wrist shows the painful symptoms of a nice carpal and it screams "BREAK"!
Anyway, some information:
No, I didn't use any ref for the face.
In face the only photo reference I used is a pink mushroom from getty images (I'll post it together with some close-ups later).
This is half of the page for a background that will be used for a gaming magazine and was commissioned by Heresy Gaming. The Character is copyright to their Victoriana setting and most certainly inspired by American McGee's Alice. However with less Goth feel and more of the actual Alice elements.
The outfit was defined by the AD after different b/w sketches I made for him.
Well yeah..that's about it - hope you enjoy. I go and burry my wrist in the freezer now..

Turned out just beautiful, trust me. Put it away for a long time on you hdd. In the maybe for later folder that you have.
One day you'll see it and probably like it a lot. Stuff you added looks really good! Great job.

Wonderful hun :) I'm so happy to see this finished! It looks every bit as good as I hoped, the blood on the knife and the apron is a very nice touch. I absolutely love those little pricks of light on the left aswell, they add to the slightly loony and surreal Alice-in-wonderland feel that you captured so perfectly.
5*'s from me.

Hmmm... I really can't like the style of high heels, miniskirt.. well, etc. Good face for no ref, though.

Oh Tasha, I wish I could put some words for you that could be as pretty as you are, but they don't exist....."

The perspective in which she is standing seems off.
It seems like she is leaning away from the picture but then comes back in near the top.
The consistency in this painting is off as well. She is done nicely but the floor and mushrooms look like they are still in the blocking stage.
If you were to crop out the lower half it would hide these things.
Nicely painted character though.

Hmmm... I really can't like the style of high heels, miniskirt.. well, etc. Good face for no ref, though.
Like I said, the character description including the outfit was defined by the Art Director.
Aenvil: The whole setting is supposed to be a bit off at parts thus adding the the slightly surreal feeling of this composition (including those swirlies here and there..). It's a contrast world to the Victorian setting. Dark, strange and mean.
Thanks for the comments everyone :)
Here is some layout with text - the actual background minus the char were supposed to only work as support.

This is some great work, which I come to expect from you given the quality of your artwork in general. The expression on her face is awesome, and the overall mood and composiitioin is impressive. Looks like you spent a ton of time for this one, and it paid off. Well done!

great job! great to see your work improve over time..
been thinking of an Alice illo my self u just game me an idea.
This is truly a wonderful piece - the final touches greatly enhances the overall feeling of it, and I really enjoy the small details you've put here and there. Those of us who have followed your WIP thread also know that it has been made in spite of wrist pains, which makes the final product all the more incredible!
I could have done without the blood spatter, though, but that's only because I'm too faint-hearted. It's masterfully done :)

Hi Natascha, another exquisite pic 'ey :applause: Been meaning to ask ya, did you make it into exotique? The book's a bit expensive to import for me at this stage, so I was just wonderin whether ya made it. Anyhoo, good job, and I can't wait for the next one.

Fantastic work. I love the figure, especially her face. Very expressive, with that sense of courrupted innocence. I like the pose, and the differentiation in the character and setting do add a surreal look to the whole composition. The background and foreground elements are not quite as strong as the figure, but only because they don't seem quite as finished. As you said, sometimes deadlines determine how far elements are pushed. I think you should be very proud of the finished work, and it looks great with the text layout you posted. Awesome stuff!

Ok, got a bit more time to answer now
Pushav: thanks and glad you did. I was pretty hesitant to post a wip thread at first.
iman121: thank you very much
Jm: hah - actually I think if I get back to this after a few time I will see all the mistakes and unfinished elements..ah well. I learned a lot through this (like always). Thanks for the support in the wip thread :)
Elsie: thank you girl :] I was hoping the stronger cast light thingies would help. I also have to thank Sacha for sending me a paintover with some stronger/saturated colors. It made me rethink and add the stronger higlights there.
Katea: thanks for the boot help :D
betito: ai thanks..you are talking about the painting though right?
Angel: thanks for the help in the wip thread <3
Blithe: thank you, really happy to hear the wip thread was interesting :}
Ahmed: ah well, yeah..I tend to overwork a painting still..I need to yet find a good combination between details and painterly feel.
alfy: the client was very happy with this piece..so I am as well..but I know I could have done better without the stupid interruption and breaks. It didn't help that I had to finish three illustrations in between. Just about when I really had the flow for the painting. Worst thing ever.
December: I take that as a big compliment. Muchas gracias :]
sh@ke: thanks Michael :D
slickgreekgeo: Actually..I don't think it was that much time..just a lot of breaks and wholes in the workflow
SpaceTik: thanks :) and cool - make sure to post it!
Gmax: Thanks for following the thread. Well she is usually killing tons/armies of goblins so I thought some blood would add to the character ;) I was planning on adding it quite from the start.
Madalaine: thanks for all the comments - it's very much appreciated :) Thanks my wrist is starting to get better slowly :] No rest for the wicked!
Squib, thanks Mister - love that avatar btw!
tomas slobodnik: glad you do and I'll try ;)
rawwad: thankie!
Eskarina: Thanks for the compliment :]
Kaspaas: Hi there, yep I was lucky and I am very flattered to have one of my paintings in there :D. Next one..uhh yeah..already started it.
Urrgos: Yeah..I am still trying to find a good balance between painterly and realistic..haven't quite found the best mix yet. Thanks for the feedback!
dunkelgold: hey benita and thanks! I haven't used the liquify a lot myself..but it sure helps to fix some off balance things at the end and glad my little mutterings were helpful :D
Same to you!
Gotta find more ways to make smilies..

Natascha,
Beautiful work, particularly on the upper body and face, which look the most finished ~ another singuarly Natascha~esque piece from you! :) I sincerely hope you give your wrist a good rest and that you are back to painting only when you feel up to it ~ no need ruining your health for the sake of a painting. You do beautiful work, and are always an inspiration! :)
Cheers,

Awesome character! To me this is a fantastic dark version of Alice in Wonderland. What a beautiful nasty girl. Love all the details of the cloths. Excellent concept - perfectly realized. :applause: 4 stars.
As to the ugly character: This is really scaring - but most imaginative. Bravo!
