Hi Erich,

what was your old username? I was getting a bit confused here...:D

I totally like the reflection on the hair of this one...

@Rebecca

thx.

well, this was just a test for me. i want to become my work more loose, so i switched back to painter. theres no way i could get that look with PS (i tried a lot in the last months). so i chose the first pics i found to test it.

Oversaw the 50-head-thing at all...damn it, now i'm very late. are you going to make another month, torso or so ?

so my goal for these studies is to loosen up in a painterly way...if that makes sense... :)

@Mr Mu
thx. i had EL Chief as username...i should have chosen my real name as new username, but now it's too late, i think. Or is it possible to change ones username by a moderator?

Erich,

I agree with razz, the painting of the girl is nice, and a nice departure from your other work. Looking forward to seeing more progress in this direction. :)

Hi Erich,

I am surprised about your painter sketches, especially face08 has a very great impression of an innocent but sexy young lady. I could imagine this kind of picture combined with your another stuff, perhaps something like a victim of a vampire, having a sad but innocent look.

Go on this way, I like it a lot!

Ciao,
Ellie

ErichSchreiner

thx Ellie. i think i will make some other exercises in that direction, when i find the time.

i think i don't think enough in volume or roundness while i'm drawing...

Rebeccak

Erich,

I may have mentioned this before, but I think buying at least one Vilppu DVD (perhaps the first one?) might really help with the crucial missing piece which is thinking in terms of roundness. :) Also I think that drawing larger, and perhaps focusing on occasion on one body part, say for example a leg, will really help in this regard.

I look forward to seeing your updates ~ as always, your output is prolific, which is great to see.

Cheers,

~Rebeccak

Hi Erich,

I think the ear of the right woman is a bit height. And there is something weird with the bottom margin, but still don't have an idea how to fix the problem.

If this would be a book cover, lol, the solution would be easy. But a nice picture, and as always: fast and furious. A second "Donnerknispel" from Hamburg, hehe.

Hi, Erich.

I had not seen your thread. It's unfortunate that so many of the images are missing (at least they are for me). This last batch is really nice. One of the faces looks like one of the actors from Underworld. Nice sketches.

This was the Lucien character from Underworld. All studies are based on screen captures from certain movies.

Don't be too hard on yourself when it comes to your drawings...they are just a means to an end, which is the painting...:)
I have been neglecting my drawing for a few years now..LOL....I'm taking a life drawing class
with live models ..starting the 16th of this month...:eek: can hardly wait to see how bad my drawings turn out in that first class...should be interesting and amusing if nothing else..:scream:

thx Glenn.

i had two life drawing courses in the last month. For me, that's just a part of the whole picture (practicing from references, master drawings, photographs, from life, make things up etc...). Some guys swear that life drawing is the best and only way for them to get better in drawing, but i think that depends on the individual. Everybody learns differently :)

I hope it will push you foreward.

Before i do some MasterStudies i will go through some photo references to make some things clear for myself.
First round of male backs (quick studies):

Good to see your new studies Erich. I need to figure out a way to demo traditional techniques because there are some things which are just better seen than talked about. If you watch Vilppu's DVDs I think that might be a good key to your loosening up in your studies and getting the mass conception down a bit more fluidly. As always, your work ethic is inspiring. :)

ErichSchreiner
01-08-2007, 07:46 PM
thx Rebecca :)

i own his first DVD (gesture). i think i would need the square or circle DVD for understanding the masses better, or which one would you recommend?

Demos of traditional techniques would be very very cool. Hope you will find a way soon :)

I did these quick studies for getting a better understanding of the muscles of the back (covered by skin and fat). The patterns never look the same, but slowly i see things repeating, and how certain muscles / muscle groups interlock etc...interesting.

You keep amazing me!

About your drawings... they only look a bit scribbly because it seems you are rushing the shading. I'm sure if you would take your time you could perfectly make drawings that look finished. .

Since you're a painter (I think) at heart, I wouldn't worry about it :D

ErichSchreiner

and you're right, i'm rushing them, because my goal is a better understanding of the muscles and their basic patterns, so i only want to spend the right amount of time per study...and that's not much. perhaps 15 to 25 minutes. :)

The dedication you show to your craft is an inspiration in itself. I love how you attack everything and really seek to learn all you can about it. The front and back studies are all coming on nicely, and you've come a long way even from the beginning of those... Have you ever tried shading in the direction of the form? At the minute it seems all your shading is done in the same direction which is lovely for smooth looking drawings, but in these it might help inject a littl bit of life to try other driections following the form, even curvier lines swinging back and forth... just a suggestion! Keep it up!

@Intervain

thx a lot. Honestly i have to admit that the scribbly look was a direct result of my laziness. i didn't want to invest too much time in the beginning, but now, for a better look, i do it. :)

@Zephyri
thx. Well, i think the studies are too small to shade along the form. every post is about A4 (lettersize), but i understand your concern. :)

Hi...Erich...:)

Great studies..:thumbsup:
You might add to thier effect...just my opinion here, and a passing thought.:)
By making some of the muscles relaxed even more than you are showing, while the other muscles are working, you would be creating a reason, action for, in, and with the pose. You might try really emphasizing that aspect of the figure more in these studies.
Having all of the muscles tensed and bulging at the same time, ..would make it imposible to move...some stretch, and some bulge, alowing movement..TWIST and motion.
Like I said though,...just a thought that might test your memory even further, and enhance those GREAT studies that your doing even more:)
Really looking forward to seeing more of these studies..think they are great, and a great way to learn to remember..:thumbsup:

Erich,

Great to see how much you are pushing yourself! Lots of great studying going on here, that is taking you closer to your goals.

I would love to see you loosen up your line work eventually and do more gestural studies. I can't recall if you had gotten Vilppu's Gesture DVD but I really think you would enjoy it. I think drawing a bit larger and with a medium over which you have less control actually helps you to do better drawings. An especially good exercise for this is doing the timed 2, 5, and 15 minute drawings. Take a look at PixelColada's thread to see what I mean - he even has 1 minute drawings. That's the kind of thing I think you would really benefit from, even if you use photo reference to do them - it's really been helping me lately to do a lot of these short format drawings to get a gestural, loose feel.

Cheers and keep up the hard work! :)

ErichSchreiner

@thx Rebekka :)

i own the gesture DVD. Right now, the studies are aimed for surface patterns and anatomy (muscles etc...) only. I have already two of the virtual pose books, and will start to concentrate more on the gesture / poses in a few weeks.

That first sheet is looking great, with the last lower right male figure it seems you are taking more time to think about the correspondence of the opposing sides of the body, something I think is lacking in some of the other studies. The key thing to remember with figurative art in which you are trying to express something is that the use of line and expressiveness is bound up with the 'accuracy' of the line you are making. I think if you did a few charcoal drawings where the size were just a bit larger, you would begin to get a bit more feeling into the work. Right now I can completely appreciate your great effort at getting basic figures down, it's something I think everyone should try as hard as you do to do. :) But I think further down the road it will be nice to see you push the expressiveness of your figures more, and really get a sense of energy into the linework as it enhances the pose of the figure you are depicting.

thx Rebecca

opposing sides of the body, something I think is lacking in some of the other studies.

Do you mean 'thinking across the form' ? I thought this is still one of my problems.

that the use of line and expressiveness is bound up with the 'accuracy' of the line you are making
just to get it right: more accuracy means less expressiveness? Or does it mean something different?

Sorry for asking again, but discussing such things over the internet is sometimes really hard for me :)

i made this quick sketch on A4 (lettersize).

Heh, see actually I like that quick sketch you just did much better than some of the tighter pencil drawings you've done. :) There's a dichotomy that is created by doing the tighter pencil studies and then the looser ones. The only way to really force yourself to work loosely is by timing your studies, by doing short 2 / 5 / 10 or 15 minute drawings, preferably from a model, but working from reference is really useful as well I've found. As you do the tight drawings you build your anatomical knowledge and eye for detail, as you do the loose drawings, you build your ability to work gesturally which is often what brings beauty to a drawing. Michelangelo is best at combining both accuracy and gestural fluidity, for example:

The tighter drawings you are doing are fantastic, don't get me wrong. :) They are doing a lot in terms of increasing your confidence and you're certainly one of the most committed to learning I've seen, which is great! The main thing I think you just need to inject is doing faster, timed drawings on occasion to get your wrist and arm moving in a gestural way. It's a tricky process to combine both the gestural strokes and anatomical accuracy, but it's worth practicing. Vilppu is great at this, Michelangelo is the absolute master of it. The main thing to notice in the above drawings is the rhythm that is set up by the opposing curves of the form. If you follow the curves on either side of the body, the way you 'read' the form is not all that fast, it's slow enough to let you appreciate the push and pull of the form. This is admittedly hard to transmit via text, but if you study the drawings of masters like Michelangelo I think that you will see what I mean. :)

That is 100% better! :) The leftmost figure is exactly what I think you should be aiming for with respect to gesture + anatomical description. There is so much more expressiveness in the line that keeps me interested in the drawing as a drawing, rather than as a mere description of form. Keep pushing these, I think it will really ultimately enhance the dynamism of your paintings. If you start to study master works and compositions, you will see how the gesture of the figures is echoed everywhere in the compositions. This flow ties such masterworks together. Take a look at any of these compositions (http://images.google.com/images?hl=en&q=rubens&btnG=Google+Search&ie=UTF-8&oe=UTF-8&um=1&sa=N&tab=wi) and notice how the gestures of the figures leads the eye around the composition. Though the style may not be what you are aiming for, the fundamental principle of dynamism is what any artist should try to have in their drawings / compositions. :)

The color comps are looking nice too!

good gestures, the loose ones. I like'm a lot!

Keep m coming!

Really nice color studies, I like the way you are using films (I think?) to study color. Good stuff! :)

@cyanid

thx a lot :)

@Rebecca
thx and you're right (except the last one / photo). I like, how they apply filters in movies, but i think i have to admit now, that it would make more sense, to search up references for a certain painting / project, than to study them for fun, because there are way tooo many lighting situations etc. out there.

But, for example, they are great for concentrating on brush economy, anatomy, eye training etc...well, in my opinion :)
