View Full Version : Timīs Grandmaya at bus stop
Leydecker 11-21-2002, 05:06 PM Hi folks,
hereīs one of my latest misdoings using Maya4. Iīm sorry for
the unusual aspectratio. Itīs due to being a printpiece for
a book (Phoenomene by Scheufelen) we put together at school.
The original image is 3660x1460 pixels wide, took me quite
a while to render. All textures are mousepainted, the lighting
is based on GI_Joe by www.pixho.com.
Due to some timeconstraints I built everything into the frame.
The textures were mostly projected through camera.
Exept for Grandmaya, she got her dress slapped on the classic
UV way. Some of the stretching happened on purpose btw...
Cheers

though it looks fantastic I see its not exactly in the same place
the character is chartoony while the scene is trying to get a photorealistic feel.
great work all the same
edt.
sorry looked again, whats bugging me are the seats, the chrome and the detail on the covers, rest is great :)

Hi folks,
thanks for the C&C.
I tried to get a realistic feel, like if it was a model shot.
Everything build out of putty and plywood so to say.
The seats were supposed to look like painted...
Well, maybe itīs too much. Regarding the reflections, youīre
right, they stand out way too much. I wasnīt able to get
them done better then I must admit. Fiddled with them until
the last minute, they just looked to crisp and loud...
Attached youīll find some of the projected textures.
After looking at them I actually like the seats again. Due
to the *extraordinary* painting I put on them. must have
taken days to get them done....
cheers

P.S: Keep īem coming.

Hereīs an alternative pass for the chrome parts, I rendered
several passes of some of the elements to blend them in the
final image. Yet, as I said before, I just couldnīt get the
reflections/chrome right.

Hi again,
thanks for the thumbs up. Here are two more of the projected
textures. As youīll notice I simply painted onto a render of the
scene, splitting the texture where objects would overlap.
Itīs been not too easy to figure this out initially...ughhh.

Iīve found some of the preliminary sketches done to *impress*
both the client/sponsor of the book as well as our professor,
who after talking to his texter refused to accept my entry:-)
Iīll see if I can dig out the layoutrender as well.

Finally, hereīs the original layout that got rejected.
After making clear that this layout was only meant
to communicate the camerangles and basic layout
of the shot - resistance broke :-)
But serious, one may admit that a grandma flying
through a bus may look a bit too insulting to some.
Especially if she wears Supermanpanties, which
was planned initially.
Fortunately I was involved in the actual production
of the book, with direct contact to the client.
Together with a prefinal text he liked the pic it alot.
Lucky me:-)
Cheers and see you next time

i think the shadows are a bit too diffuse for it to look like a model shot.
and the white windows are a bit too distracting maybe. makes the whole scene look a bit flat.
interesting technique though that you used with painting and camera projections.. have to remember that one. ;)

Oh Stimpy, a reply - finally :-)
But seriously, I guess the flat look comes from the lack
of DOF FX and the very soft/diffuse lighting. As if there
was a huge lightbox around everything.
In fact there was.
After thinking about it, there may lack DOF,motionblur FX,
some more details in the texture (I didnīt bump at all).
All this may be obsoleted through a better cameraangle
or a little dog in the left part of the image. Planned to
put one in but was defeated by time.
cheers and thanks for your C&C
