View Full Version : How would you go about lighting and rendering this..

As i am in a rendering/lighting/radiosity/GI faze i thought i would make a fairly simple scene that was interesting enough to warrant some lighting experiments. Here is the scene set up for my render
Now i have been really working hard mainly using GI/RAD to illuminate this and yet all the time i kept thinking that i lied the harshness that a non rad light setup gives, so in the end i went mainly with lights and just added rad and some glow to finish it off
My lighting is very haphazard i know very little about lighting techniques and artistic composing in general.
Sort of like the kitchen thread, but with no real master image to follow i wonder if some of you would like to have a go at this. use whatever combo of techniques you see fit, RAD/AO/Area lights etc I think we should all use the same camera angle, though i have been messing around with some other fun views
sorry about the modelling, it is VERY basic just some thing i threw together from parts but it should do and i am sure some of you could make some exsquisite renders form this lousy scene !! I initially used SPD for the textures but went with bump for speed

Here is another version, I got rid of the dof as it made the last image look like a thunderbirds set model
I changed the lighting colors and just have 3 lights, the sun top left an opposite light to light the left wall and a floor as a sort of fill, and then a hint of low level rad
Still not that impressed with it, the mats need a lot of work, i went back to displaced bricks and added some noise to the others in the bump, i think the brick spec is too plastic looking
The whole scene looks to "drawn/painted" and the arches have CG written all over them. I have used orien-nayer throughout..maybe i should change this and add some weathering to the all the mats and geom, i find AO gives to much of a sketch and toon look

what gi/rad settings you using? only the gi looks non existant. (also, loose that horrid dof, you aint doing urself any favours :p )

What I did was fairly simple. I used a HDRI image for the radiosity solution and a sun light (or directional light) to direct the luminosity and create more interesting shadows. The sun light also has volumetric light and fog applied to it for a more atmospheric feel.
So as you see, the lighting can be very simple for a scene like this. Instead of a sun light you can also create a array light with 6 or 8 lights in a diamond shape.
Also notice the very shallow DOF effect. If you do too much, then the scene looks like a miniature.

Your image has a soft feel to it, Primitiv. Nice! A couple of questions: Shouldn't the low wall at the left be a little darker? And, how did you light that low wall?

Primitiv ..that is spooky, i have been playing around with the sponza model and i set my camera up in alomost exactly the same postion as your render, it sort of freaked me out to see your render after spending hours staring at my viewpoint !!

Nycl45: The soft feel comes from the fog effect in the sun light coupled with subtle DOF. The lower wall is lit by the sun light reflecting on the floor and opposite wall.
Paulselhi: Maybe not so freaky. If you look at the Sponza renders from other people, several have similar point of view.

Here is my attempt at a Sponza, this is a lot harder to light and render with GI than it may seem !!

indeed it is!
post up an idea of your gi settings and lighting rig, because again with this image, as with the last one, your gi seems almost non-existant.

Well some progress, i did away with all the extra lights i am just using a single light + a luminous sky. It has a better feel but is no way perfect, i have not found how to balance the light and dark, adjusting for the dark areas over exposes the lighter areas too much. I may well go for a lower rad amount and revert to using extra low level lights for the shadowed area in the lower level
