Thought I should take some time to post a few WIPs!

I have kind of been working on my entry since the contest opened - mostly just imagining and refining ideas in my head and doing the odd sketch. It's taken me this long to settle on one idea!

This is the composition I've settled on.

Originally I was going to have the carriage flying toward a site based around a huge waterfall. But I've seen at least 3 other people doing waterfalls - so I changed the idea to speeding across the sea...

But then I started to think about a more intimate setting - amongst a crowd of people watching the procession - the carriage glides though a canal toward the coronation site.

I decided I was totally insane to attempt this - It’s far beyond anything I've done before and I don't have much time to do it... but I know what I want, so I’m just going for it! I think the lack of time now will help keep the image free and spontaneous - a lively scene without my usual tendency toward over-refinement!

I hope I can pull it off ;)

I spent most of Saturday working on this. But I just couldn't make it work - I decided to abandon it this morning and start again! :D

A very loose lineart. Sometimes I use lineart, other times I just block-in. I was going to do a line art for the whole scene, but... umm.. I didn't! :)

I did this using the same lineart as the initial pic. I liked where I was going with it, so I carried on...

Still a lot of work to do, but I'm sure (I hope!) I can get it done before the deadline...

The Empress’ Coronation

The young Aidelene sits pensively in the carriage as it passes down Light Canal on the approach to the Unity Settlement.

There she will become the 71st Empress of the Circle of Planets – The symbolic ruler of 93 inhabited worlds. She was selected out of thousands to be trained for this position – along with three other girls she has studied for eight years in the manner of an empress. Only the most astute and charismatic would be selected for the position.

Now that the time has come for the elderly Empress Hantaille to step down, millions of people flood the streets hoping to catch a glimpse of their new ruler on her coronation day…

That's one weird looking empress man, great imagination :thumbsup: I reckon you had to rush this too, judging by the details of your crowd. Man, the pressure was intense right? :scream: Anyway, goodluck to yah!

I'm not too sure how I feel about the picture - it's completely different to how I originally envisioned it.

I would have liked to work on it a bit more but at least I've got something resembling a finished piece...

The colours work very nicely and i like her pose and her little pet!

Although it's a shame that you didn't have enough time to tighten up some of the details. Maybe you could work into it more after the contest..?
