View Full Version : What's going wrong?! - Maya crashes, redraw issues, etc.

My Mac just seems to get sicker and sicker, but I haven't the slightest where to start on the problem. Do you have any input based on the symptoms?:

I'm running the X850 XT (256MB Vram) card on a Dual 2.7 Mac G5 (4.5GB ram) with Maya 6. OSX.4.3

Maya crashes often, usually when doing something processor intense, or if I just click too many things too quickly. I'm having lots of screen redraw issues on my main monitor--pallets coming up white, or partially drawn. Today the whole screen turned blank tan until menu movement "erased" it back off the screen. I've tested the ram and vram in TechTool Deluxe. Fixed permissions, recently even clean reinstalled the OS (on an erased drive) and all software again. I'm also having problems with a startup app called "qmasterd" unexpectedly quitting on startup. Is there any chance that I'm just trying to run a version of Maya on a system that's not "qualified"? Alias doesn't list it on the qualification chart, but that chart is usually outdated.

I think my Mac has bird flu. This thing has run worse than my G4 since day one.
Any help is appreciated.

Regards,
Greg

Hi

I posted in another thread where you asked about this but hey-ho :)

My bet is on opengl. My ATI Firegl had a similar problem to your description despite being on the qualified list (which is not a gurantee it will work under all conditions btw). ATI cards seem to have particular problem with maya and it's opengl requirements causing all kinds of display issues and crashes. In my case it was becasue I use a widescreen display and the ATI opengl implimentation did not have any widescreen formats in it's compatability list (despite being listed as compatible and having the screen format in it's options list). Trading for a quadro fixed the problems. Sorry :(

No Hawke just select maya from the list your firegl settings and thats it! Remember that Alias recommend ati.

Hi

I did that - it made no difference. On a 4:3 monitor everything worked perfectly - on two different widescreen displays maya would not run when they were set to wide aspect but it WOULD run when they were set to a 4:3 resolution. I spent over a week talking to ATI tech support and they told me to get rid of the card as there was nothing they could suggest to get it to work - I made them well aware of the problem ;) Try the firegl V5100 PCIE running maya on a widescreen monitor - you won't get v far :) In the official maya forums I was told the hardware lists are not a gurantee of compatibility or incompatability merely a 'guide'. I have nothing against ATI, I bought the card because I liked the spec and it got good reviews - but I have yet to see anyone have one work with maya on a widescreen display. The issue is now mute for me as I traded for a quadro but the problems described here are disturbingly familiar :(
