Thank you soooooo much becca!!! I will definately be working more on this, I really want to finish a piece for once :) How are the tones? I tried to build them up from the darkness in the background, tried to make them glowy like the ref, but I'm still made very nervous by color.

Okay I did about 30 minutes more on this - but had to take a break. I wish I knew a little better how to make the paint look textured - but perhaps that is because I am using photoshop and not Painter. I dunno.

Anyway, here it is:

'Nother one from me. I'm not superhappy with it. Because the ref was a statue I couldn't resist her highlights, but I think it obscures the lines somewhat. Oh, what do I know.
LM: really good work!

Annemee, your painting looks great!

LabyrinthineMind, whoa, very nice so far!

Maladie, I like it a lot. Can`t really comment on the anatomy aspect of your drawing, I don`t belive I`m compentent, but to me, this piece looks very good, "flows" nicely...

I was asked to tell a little about myself. Well I really just started drawing in September as part of my Graphic Design program I am in but I found the drawing training I am receiving to be seriously lacking so In November I decided to take matters into my own hands and learn on my own.

Annemee,

You're welcome. :) I would say your skin tones are looking fine, just keep building. The structure is the main thing to focus on, though ~ the drawing and the structure.

shrey,

Thank you for that link! :)

YMS,

WOW, keep going after this! Great progress, I look forward to your next udpate. :)

LabyrinthineMind,

I would recommend starting to blend, and to be mindful of the value structure you are creating. In PS, you can create an adjustment layer: go to Layer > New Ajdustment Layer > Hue Saturation, and when the Hue Saturation dialogue pops up, move the Saturation slider all the way to the left. A new layer will be created in your layers pallette which you can periodically turn on and off, which will allow you to check your values in grayscale while working in full color mode.

Maladie,

I like this piece, and think the main bit is not to go overboard with highlights. When strokes are apparent, try to create strokes all in one direction and to follow the underlying form, vs. scribbling. This will guide the eye and reinforce the feeling of form.

afgal,

I've posted to your Anatomy Thread, and hope to see more of your work here. I really recommend trying the Exercises posted to the beginning of this thread and reading the articles on Gesture, which are pretty good. :)

Cheers,

Ok I fixed a lot that was wrong with this, as far as I can tell - hehe. I almost 100% this sitting just worked on the face, since it's kind of the main part of the piece anyway. It's kind of meditative, doing a copy like this. The rembrandt sits on the left, my canvas sits on the right, and I just kind of 'match' the best I can. Sort of like a puzzle.

It is teaching me to see better... I think that is the purpose of these, right?

At least, I hope - it is a by product from this I feel anyway :)

LM,

Super progress on this. :) Things are really starting to come together with the face and the hood ~ great to see.

Without yet comparing this to the original, I think the habit may be a bit bulkier and more rich in hue. It will be nice to see how you flesh this out, as I think once you both darken and enrich the habit, the face will become even more enhanced. Watch the angle of his left arm and the shape silhouette that it creates against the background. Also, watch the relative length of his upper arm ~ currently, I think you may be squishing it to fit onto the canvas. You can easily change the canvas (not the image) size by going to Image > Canvas Size > click the upper center black arrow so the scaling happens from the top, and enter your new height and / or width dimensions.

Originally posted by LM: It's kind of meditative, doing a copy like this. The rembrandt sits on the left, my canvas sits on the right, and I just kind of 'match' the best I can. Sort of like a puzzle.

I think Master Copies are totally meditative! :) They are great because they give you more confidence in your own work. The puzzle aspect is also great because naturally our brains like order and rules, which leads to mastery. And you're totally right, because comparing your own work to that of a Master such as Rembrandt enables you to see through his eyes...which can never hurt.

Keep going, you're making great progress here. :)

Well - thanks Rebecca for your kind enthusiasm - but the most awful thing happened to me while working on this...

I was using the 'Dry Brush' and my photoshop hung and I lost all the progress... so it kind pissed me off :/ Anyway, thank god I know how to use my print screen lol

You can see what I had done, here (and how PS 'Not Responding' too - PFFT)

LM,

I am SO sorry to hear this  ~ this happens to all of us, unfortunately. The best advice is to occasionally save a copy of your image in bmp or jpg format ~ thus ensuring a backup at various critical stages. Usually when I get to the point where I really like something, I'll save a backup bmp or jpg. This is a MUST when working in Painter especially, as Painter is notorious for crashing often.

At any rate, you can still take your previous version and blow it up, and smooth / repaint a bit. Needless to say, I wish it hadn't happened, but it happens to the best of us, I'm afraid.

Cheers,

~Rebeccak

hehe yeah, I usually do... like 2 or 3 copies, because you never know.. but I was just plugging along in my little world and didn't think about it at all, in my little zone... bah! That'll teach me.

It's wonderful having a digital medium - but I guess this is like when your paint spills on your canvas. hehe =D

Rebeccak
05-03-2006, 03:46 AM
Ha, yeah, that's the problem :) ~ on your best pieces, you tend to forget the details. :D
Ah, well, you can still resize the image you posted here before, that was very far along ~ seriously, I don't think it would hurt the image much to resize it back up and continue to paint. It would be such a shame to not continue working on this. :)

Cheers,

seriously though, LM, we have all had this experience and I do think that until we get 100% bugfree software (that is, never) frantically saving important steps in any lossless format known to mankind is our only remedy...

hello,

I've mainly been a lurker on the cg board and thought it was about time to post some stuff. I use to draw alot when I was younger but had not been drawing at all, until about 6 months ago.

quick sketch with fountain pen i did today

this was originally a pencil sketch, took into painter and went into blender overkill, first time I've used painter. Does she look familiar to anyone?

Hey, it's Jennifer Aniston! :) I really like how this piece is coming along, and hope that you continue with it. I think that one thing that would help would be to fill the background with a mid gray so ~ you always want to try to eliminate the white canvas and work from a mid tone, building your lights up, and your darks down in value. Looking forward to seeing more progress on this!

afgal,

Good to see you doing figure drawing from life. :)

I think one thing to watch (and life drawing traditionally is something that takes just a long time to learn) is the length of your forms. Try stretching / elongating the forms a bit, more than you are presently. This gives the figures more grace and fluidity.

Here is a drawover of how you might break the form down. A really good book I would recommend to anyone interested in figure drawing is:

(http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1892053039/102-0177294-1220179?v=glance&n=283155)Vilppu Drawing Manual (Spiral-bound) by Glenn Vilppu (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1892053039/102-0177294-1220179?v=glance&n=283155)

In it, he describes how to break down forms simply into simple shapes.

Here is a drawover of your piece which I think might help:

Looking forward to seeing more of your work! :)

Heya! I've been a member of cgtalk for a while now, I browse the forums frequently to check out all of the amazing work you folks put out. Thought I might share a bit of my stuff. It's nothing special, but these are the "doodles" that i'm most pleased with.

I started drawing a couple years back when my sister bought me a how to draw mickey mouse book from disneyland when we were there on a family vacation. Never thought of it as more then a hobby. Then about a year and a half ago I stopped completely when I got myself hooked on World of Warcraft :( I was finally able to quit playing it though two weeks ago and have found myself back into my drawing and I'm loving it!

I never really thought of drawing as more then a hobby, I always wanted to be a movie director, but now i'm seriously considering becoming a concept artist. I'm in my final year of high school right now and next August I will be starting at the Vancouver Film School.

I have no professional training other then my trusty "How to Draw Mickey Mouse" book and a couple threads i've gone through on these boards. Though I did download the Andrew Loomis books before they were sadly taken down, but I havn't had a chance to go through them. I'm not sure if it would be right of me to use them now that they've been removed from the webpage.

Anyways, hope you enjoy! I read through your guidelines about how pictures can be no bigger then 800xwhatever but in case I missed something please dont hesitate to remove them and I will repost them later under the correct specifications. (and sorry for the horrible scans)

http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y53/gooms9/doodles.jpg

Here are a couple doodles I did in biology

http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y53/gooms9/gesture2.jpg

Here are some gesture studies I did in biology. I tried to keep them around the 2 minute mark but i think they most likely took a bit longer because i was trying to be sneaky, as I'm sure my teacher wouldn't have been thrilled had she known I was drawing in her class =(

http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y53/gooms9/gesture1.jpg

One more gesture study. This was more of a 5 minute study. This old geezer is my dad :P

http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y53/gooms9/heads.jpg

I'll see if you can guess who these two beauties are...

http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y53/gooms9/hand.jpg

Here's my hand that I drew after reading the drawing on the right hand of the brain thread. I thought it sounded like a cool exercise. Still havn't picked up the book though =(

http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y53/gooms9/animemobus.jpg

Here is a character from the anime "Silent Mobius". I've never read any of the comics myself, but I posted a thread about line quality the other day and Kanga suggested I draw some characters from this comic to practice so here is my first attempt.

http://i3.photobucket.com/albums/y53/gooms9/mickey.jpg

And finally the character that started it all. My good pal Mickey.

These are all from the last couple of weeks since I quit warcrack. =D Hope you enjoy!

This one is another example. Both of them without any reference.
http://i52.photobucket.com/albums/g1/Azabache_2006/Draws/Quenestil-web.jpg

And this one was done with a photo reference (for the horse), all in Painter.

Azabache,

Hi there, welcome aboard! :) Thanks for all your nice words, that means a great deal to me! :)

Wow, your drawing skills are quite strong, particularly in that first drawing of yours ~ nice work! :)

If you are wanting to transition into digital artwork, which I would encourage, you should definitely consider participating in the Open Figure Drawing Workshops:

All OFDWs are linked here:
Open Figure Drawing Workshops with Hong Ly and Rebecca Kimmel (http://forums.cgsociety.org/showpost.php?p=2602753&postcount=3)

The most current, ongoing Workshop is here (there are still 2 weeks left!):
Open Figure Drawing Workshop - Rembrandt Master Copy - with Rebeccak 016 (http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?t=349580)
You are free to use the Reference provided in OFDW 016 and to post your WIP here, to the Beginners' Lounge ~ the choice is yours as to where you post. :)

And you should also consider creating your own Anatomy Thread here:

Personal Anatomy & Sketchbook Threads (http://forums.cgsociety.org/forumdisplay.php?f=200)

See this thread first:
FAQ: Can I Create My Own Anatomy Thread? (http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?t=341167)

I greatly encourage everyone to do Master Copies, and this thread has a lot of resources:
Master Copy Resources (http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?t=354836)

Looking forward to seeing your participation on the Forum! :)

Cheers,

Well, I said I'd probably try another one. This is probably about an hour's work. I focused on the face, even though the proportions are still a tad wrong - I was trying to mainly get a value study going on first, just doing the main blocking.

http://www.aequinox.com/paintings/concepts/OFDW_16_2.jpg

BTW, everyone is looking great. I see constant and steady improvement in everyone - and that's good news, right? We're all practicing, getting better as we go.

I think the only thing I took away from my drawing 101 was what my teacher said to me on the last day of class:

"I'd much rather have a student who had good concepts, since we can teach a person how to draw -- it's like just riding a bike or learning to swim. But ideas are the tough part."

All I heard was that learning to draw was like riding a bike or learning to swim - it's something we all /can/ do.

I try to remember that everyday :)

Hi LM,

Good to see you working on the OFDW piece. :)

Regarding being able to teach drawing vs. teaching how to generate concepts / ideas ~ I think both can be taught. Illustration classes give assignments that force you to paint around the concepts ~ so idea generation and technical skill are both teachable skills, imo. Regarding drawing / painting, the best thing I ever heard from a teacher was that it was all about mileage. Actually, the person who said this was Bob Kato, who makes painting DVDs for Gnomon.

But here we're focusing on drawing / painting. :)

One thing I would recommend is not using a square brush, but using a round soft or hard brush for painting. Square brushes are more difficult to blend, and always cut into the small detail areas too much / and obscure them.

Also I would recommend creating small swatches of a range of values ~ from pure white to pure black, with yellows / ochres / browns in between ~ use the HSV slider to pick these values ~ and then use only 3 or 4 swatches (which should include black and white) to create your painting. As you lay down increasingly more paint in varying opacities, you will be able to sample more subtle values directly from the canvas.

Looking forward to your progress on this! :)

Cheers,

~Rebeccak

omg, how sad is that, I didn't even notice that I was using an oblong brush. You know, the extreme ellipse oval kind?

Ooooops =D

Will change right away, and I was actually starting to do the swatch thing! But of course, not the right way... lol

I like these, they really are meditative. I needed that today hehe :)

Great work in here! I'm sorry, I'm a bit too tired for individual replies, I'll try that next time:).

Guess who it is...hehe. Feels a bit like blasphemy to even try, but it was great fun and I'm still developing my sketching style which is benefitting immensely from copying good 'lines'. Fifteen minutes with no eraser (hence the chaotic eye).

Great to hear you're enjoying the Master Copies. :) I may not comment much but I've been looking at your WIP thread and there's a lot of great improvement there ~ master copies only expedite that process. :)

Maladie,

Thanks, Rebecca! Here's another one. I'm not sure how to 'push' them, except to do them (almost) every day. I try to make clearer lines but I still need more feeling for that. Sometimes it also seems hard to do little things like faces on a small tablet, but maybe that's not an excuse:). Anyway I liked his cute little skirt.

For the thread I just felt a little inspired - and a little bored: husband is out of town tonight and I get really manic when he's gone, I need to keep busy until I'm so exhausted I collapse.

Strong lineart! I like it a lot. Also, impressive how you managed to translate that into the digital realm.

At the moment I am fighting my challenge entry on a daily basis. While it's a somehow strangely nurturing thing to be working intensely on a single painting I do miss my daily exercises and the feeling of doing "mileage" (Rebecca). Well, the 27th is a set limit at least.

TA,

This is overall a really nice sketch. :) The majority, the torso, legs, and her left arm are looking great. I think the right arm and the face need a bit more work (the right arm seems a bit small in comparison to the left) but I think you're really starting to get some nice light / dark effects happening overall, and especially with the legs.

Keep up the good work! :)

This is all I managed to get done. I'm having a bad drawing day, possibly due to the fact I'm a little sick. I was so clumsy and all the lines just came out wrong. I'd rather have a bad hair day any day:). Anyway, I'll just consider this one of my 10.000 bad pieces that, according to Clippie, each artist has to get out of the way before they get to the good stuff.

Here's another one. Despite the praise for having improved I'm not really convinced of that myself. I really saw it when I did a muscular male torso some time ago, but ever since that I feel less and less sure of where to put all the lines. I guess I'm now on a platform and have to keep pushing till I can take the next step up. Sometimes it's just frustrating though, 'cause one thing will come out alright and then the next will be mucked up, and I won't know what I did wrong. Maybe I should take a course or something.

Sorry to bother you all with this, I just had to get it off my chest:).

A-I-R,

Nice piece! A lot of expressiveness in this one, I like it a lot! Keep going in this direction, it seems to be a good one. :)

Maladie,

Clippy's right, and you'll go through days and periods of time where things don't click ~ and then, after a while, they do click and you reach a new plateau. Over the years I've learned to expect and even to exploit this cycle of fallowness and growth, to use a nature analogy; I'll push through the periods where none of my drawings are working because I have learned that they are a necessary part of the process in order to get to the point where I've learned something new. I've actually reached a 'gait' where I can expect to do 5~6 drawings that don't work before I hit a few that do. It's actually kind of cool once you master the concept that this is how things work in drawing. But admittedly it took a long time for me to learn that, and the frustration is always there in the 'off' periods, though I have to say it is considerably less. :)

Regarding courses, I am not trying to push anything on anyone, but I will be teaching another CGWorkshop soon (I can't say exactly how soon, as CGSociety members get first crack at signing up) but there is also some cool stuff happening in relation to the upcoming Workshop that I am excited about. No definite details though, but I'll let folks know once I can. :)

Also, are there figure drawing courses at a local community college or otherwise that you can take? Oftentimes community colleges (here, at least) run uninstructed model workshops which you can attend for a small fee. Alternately, model/artist guilds exist and you can always check to see if there are art classes offered in your area ~ if there are, I most definitely encourage you to take live figure drawing classes! :)

Mr. Mu,

Heh, I've been really horrible about checking in on anyone's Challenge entries...my apologies for that. I really got caught up in the Workshop as always happens (and as should happen) and then also the forum changes ~ great! but time consuming. I hope you've enjoyed the Challenge process, it's very cool just to get your feet wet in I think and it's just fun to participate in a group event. I look at it as more of a fun social thing than actually trying to 'win'. :)

Needless to say, it's nice to see you back, and I look forward to seeing many more of your pieces, especially now that you have Painter! :)

tizianoadmirer,

WOW!!! Did you get a tablet recently? I can't imagine that you did this with a mouse, but if you did, then my hat is off to you. :) Your recent progress is really amazing, and great to see ~ I'm really happy for you and can't wait to see your further progress! :)

Azabanche,

Just saw your post. :) Nice studies! It looks as though you are inspired by Hogarth? I definitely encourage you to continue with these. You are more than welcome to post your work to both threads. Think of your Personal Anatomy Thread as sort of your Home Base ~ all of the other Tutorial and Workshop threads are there for you to work on your own work in a group environment, and the Personal Anatomy Threads are more like a repository for the work generated in other places. :)

Good to see your work! :) I would say that the torso is nicely drawn, and the individual features are all well ~ executed. In my drawings I have always used this black and white style, probably because of my "comic-wannabe" background. Since I’m trying to move forward in my art (by applying color and more backgrounds :D) maybe I should lose this developing a new system for myself. I have to try and decide. :)
I made some research about Hogarth, I guess you mean Burne Hogarth, the penciler of Tarzan. I have seen his work (who hasn't?) but I have to say it's not my artistic inspiration. Though, it was interesting to see that he wrote several books for anatomy, here is the list of books I found if anyone is interested to take a look:
Dynamic Anatomy (1958); Drawing the Human Head (1965); Dynamic Light and Shade, (1981); and Dynamic Wrinkles and Drapery (1992); plus Dynamic Figure Drawing and Drawing Dynamic Hands.

Just another sketch using an artists study. Spent about an hour on this, really need to get my speed up, think im taking too long on these sketches. I struggled with this piece, first started with a rough contour and blocked in the shapes. The hardest thing was getting the thigh to look right, there is something off with the arch of the back too and the shoulders and head do not seem as though they are pulling in together. Finally the shading/render is particularly bad, i can never get this right, even doing simple spheres, they get messed up. I may do my own study using a photo ref.

Rebbecak - Thanks for the link, will definately use this. Now i can get up close and personal with these anatomy specimens :)

Hi everyone!

Well, I'm a real beginner at drawing (although, like everyone else, want to get better) and newbie to this forum - and after looking through works that has been posted on this forum I think there's a whole lots to be learn! You guys are super great! Although, it's a bit confusing and intimidating for a beginner like me to, well, to start. There's so many things to do here that I just don't know which to do first. There's the assignment, sketchatron, master copy, workshop, and tons of resources that seems like bottomless pit!

So I though, I'll introduce myself first and post my work. After that, someone might be kind enough to point me to the right direction...

I don't have anything great. This is a freehand copy from one of my anatomy book (not even master copy -_-') that I just did after reading this forum. (It's 15 minutes for each sketch)

Hello! I'm so happy! Finally tonight I did a sketch I'm satisfied with. That took me like ten sketches in between, so to feel like something 'clicked' again is very rewarding!:) With this I feel I was more able to clear up the light and dark areas, which makes the drawing 'clearer'. I took the ref from a stock site by Cypherx, btw thank you for that!

Took a little longer than usual, I'd say 40 minutes or so.

ricma, I love the subtle shading! Also I can't see a lot wrong with the proportions. I think the left arm hasn't got much depth, that's why maybe it looks awkward. Although it doesn't to me...

I definately took another little step 'up' in my learning process. This sketch tonight came very easy in about 15 minutes. Somehow I seem to have a little more control. I'm really fascinated by this process and enjoying it. Tonight I read a thread from a guy on conceptart.org, who went from rookie to pro in 4 years, with all his original posts still in it. AMAZING stuff. Can put up a link if people are interested, it's very inspirational!

Been trying to find more time to draw lately. I need practice, trying to set myself a target of atleast one a day now. I hope I can keep it up.

Here are a couple of recent sketches from reference, as you can see I need to work on my hands, faces, feet, tone/shading and just general anatomy quite a lot so I'll keep practicing.

Hi everyone,

Am finally back in town, and I have so much to catch up on! It's great to see so much work being done, and also to see new people here. To all the new folks, welcome. :)

ricma,

It's a pleasure to see your new work. :) I hope you don't mind, but I did a bit of a review. So far, I think your piece looks really solid, there are just a few things which I think might be improved: :)

http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b380/rebeccak5/Beginners%20Lounge/ricma_Review-04.jpg

The left arm I feel is a bit small in comparison to the well~articulated and proportionally more accurate right arm.

The ribs should follow the basic cylindrical of the chest ~ the lines of the ribs being more or less parallel to one another as they arc around from behind.

The features of the face should also be in parallel (tough to do on a small scale, which makes getting the basic gesture of the features even more important).

Hope this helps. :)

Cheers,

~Rebeccak

2dartist,

This is a nice study you did of the Crouching Boy sculpture by Michelangelo. I think one thing you might do differently is to average out the curve of the back more and make it a bit less randomly bumpy. :) Also, I think proportionally to the legs, his upper torso should be a bit larger. Take a look at the brief paintover below and let me know what you think: :)

I think this kind of study is great, and I'd like to see more like this. :)

Maladie, it's great to hear you're back on track! :) Very nice sketch here, it looks a bit like the Irish singer Loreena McKennitt. Nice mood to this piece, and the shape of the skull is captured nicely. :)

Fallofmart, it's great to see you back! I hope you are on the mend, and doing well. :)

Your work is looking quite nice, and I think you are handling proportions quite well. :) I think the main thing I would encourage you to do is to refine your linework, and to frequently sharpen your pencil and create strokes that flow parallel to one another.

For example, notice how in Rubens' master drawing (http://www.wga.hu/art/r/rubens/7graphic/22drawin.jpg) how the lines are grouped in patches of evenly spaced parallel lines. The biggest challenge is to follow the contour of the underlying form which you are creating on the page. Try imagining that you are an ant on the surface of the object you are drawing, and leaving a trail behind with your pencil of what that surface is like topologically to the ant. :)

Looking forward to seeing more of your work! :)

Sitoh, your piece is lovely, and I hope you develop this into a full~fledged painting. :) I agree that the right arm muscles are a little off, but that should be easily fixable at the painting stage. :) Really looking forward to seeing this piece develop!

Azabanche, Hogarth is a great person from whom to learn how to break down the figure into understandable parts, but I would never encourage people to draw in his style. ;) I take as my main artistic inspiration artists from the High Renaissance, such as Michelangelo for Drawing and Sculpture.

Then again, artistic inspiration comes from everywhere, past and present. :) I think it's important to have a mix of artistic inspirations, and to understand how certain artists (such as Hogarth) have a place within one's artistic education, but do not necessarily occupy the primary seat. :)

Hi Rebecca,

nice to see you back in a posting frenzy and all...:D

I would like to say that I findit remarkable how everyone who studies Hogarth (or, like you, who even studied being taught by Hogarth) makes it a point not to embody his style too much. I own "Drawing the human head" and "Drawing Dynamic Hands", because my girl-friend initally bought them for herself and it turned out she did not like his style of drawing.

I think it's important to keep in mind that he emphasizes and exaggaerates the forms he is trying to hammer home to the student, so the hands for example don't look like real hands.

I remember I had a big epic Volume of an early "Tarzan" comic when I was a kid, that might have been Hogarth, and I absolutely loved it. Does anyone have a link to drawings of Hogarth he did not do for educational purposes?

I didn't know you were taught by Hogarth!! Must have been a privilege to have him as a teacher! I agree with you about the artistic inspiration, I guess I'am influenced by Hogarths' drawing style because he really influenced the way of drawing for comics, more than any other artist of his time. Now it's time to find inspiration in other artists (more colourful :D) like the ones that hang around in this forum!! :)

Mu
I couldn't find any gallery, but if you search "Burne Hogarth" for Images in google, you will find a lot of Hogarth's drawings!

Azabanche, yep, I was privileged to have had his last full class. :) He was an amazing teacher and very inspiring! As you know, there are just tons of artists on CGTalk from whom to draw inspiration. :) Hogarth's genius was in being able to break down form so systematically.

ricma - thanks for the kind words. Nice work on your study the torso in particular, definately a tough one.

rebeccak -

I can see a difference straight away with paintover, it looks a little more balanced. I've avoided looking at the sketch for a few days after finishing it to see if I can find anything i dislike when coming back to it but had no joy, but you outline makes it clear. I think i'll attempt this piece again, but not just yet, next im looking at going back to basics with gestures and maybe some bridgman studys. Thanks again for the advice.

Hi Rebeccak,

thanks! I am aware of the small left arm problem. I just can`t figure out how I managed to overlook such a mistake at the early stage of sketching the contours...

I belive I am stuck to one way of drawing that I learned from "right side of the brain" book...so I am not really seeing cylinders, spheres etc, but 2d shapes, lines, angles...and getting a few of them wrong, makes the whole drawing distorted.
I am not exactly sure to which direction I should be going with my drawing at this stage...
(yeah, an art college would be a very good direction but simply imposible for me)
Another big problem is my impatience. I am so excited about learning how to draw, that I can hardly concentrate or give myself more time to "evolve"... So, I have a lot of ups and downs, very high hopes which is probably not good.

Anyway, making corrections to his ribcage and face should not be a big problem, so I`ll do them asap. I`ll try my best to make the left arm look better.
Thanks for your guidance!!!

fallofmart, these are looking very good, keep them coming!
Hope to see other peoples progress.

2dartist, thanks mate!

Take care

Hi ricma,

I know exactly what you mean! When I first came here I wanted to be a character designer and was like: 'Okay, I need to do basics. Oh, cool, I did a sketch today. So when am I going to be good?':) You know, I was doing the exercises but just to get them 'out of the way' to start with the, in my opinion, interesting stuff.

I feel completely different now. I've started to realise that to really learn how to draw interestingly, you need to practice, practice, practice...and enjoy:). I still do creative stuff of my own as a treat, but they get way less replies than the referenced stuff, and with good reason I think.
The funny thing is also, the deeper I dig into these basics the more I start enjoying them in their own right, not as a means to reach another goal. I think if that doesn't happen to you (not you - generally speaking) you're gonna have a tough time, because that's what you're going to be doing the first few years or so:).

So...relax, enjoy, and don't worry! If you have to walk this road anyway why not enjoy the surroundings? I realise I'm sounding like some manic Obi Wan Kanobi, but I just wanted to encourage you.
As for drawing, I just copy photo's and developed more controlled strokes along the way, that in my case always tend to look sloppy but also lend style and life to the drawings I think. Life drawing...that's another story. Mine are so early days they look way less sophisticated:). In fact they look very uninteresting so far. But they're way more important, I think, to get a grip on things like mass and lighting, so I'll just keep doing them until I will get some control there too. I guess in that case I'd have developed 'a style'. But I don't really bother with it, just do it really. I want to go have a look at those books for sure, it's always good to get some techniques down, but the main thing for me is DOING, not thinking:).

I hope this helps you in any way, maybe just by thinking you want to go about stuff a totally different way. Happy drawing!

that is so right. When I started my first steps in the anatomy forum I was actually looking for techniques in order to improve my sketches for the DSG...

Then I waded through the shading and gesture and opposing curves and OFDW threads and of course the Beginner's Lounge and soon found me doing anatomy for the simple reason that I enjoy it.

It is also a field for a lifetime of studies. The complexity of it never seems to end no matter how far you narrow it down.

So, I had a little list of things to learn and below the list item "anatomy" were a couple of other things like landscapes or achitecture. I sincerely hope that anatomy knowledge carries over to those things, because I can't let go of anatomy just yet...

By the way: You have developed a very nice sense of rhythm and line. The face and the expression in the dog's eyes is just priceless. I am not too sure about the values in the necktie thingy, did it have folds or was it plastic (medical)?

And, just to keep you busy, another golden link... did opposing curves yet? (http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?t=255700)
I think you actually make use of the principle, but to study the tasks in that thread might help you use your linework a bit more economically. Fewer strokes, more impact.

Keep it up everyone - when the challenge is over, I will be joining in again...

Maladie, thanks for your reply.
That is so true, I feel I am doing exercises just to get them out of the way and start with "nice" stuff... I do enjoy drawing, but sometimes I get too hard on myself, expect a lot, but really, I have only just discovered my love for drawing...I do feel that I might be good at it. I am mostly satisfied with what I`ve done so far, but when I see all the beautiful images here on forum, such talented people, I get impatient, disappointed in my own abilities etc.
However, when I think of how much effort and dedication people have put into their work, technique, education in order to get there...I realize I am at the very beginning of that journey an I still have a lot of work ahead of me.
I think of this as a hobby, something I`d do beside my work, and maybe make something interesting out of it.
And with all you nice people here on board, it is a very enjoyable and fun! So, thanks for the encouragement !Everybody needs some once in a while :)

The dog drawing is awesome! Mu has already pointed out the neck area which seems a bit odd. Very nice sketch!

Take care

normanfreak,

Welcome aboard. :) I've already chatted with you a bit, but I should say that I really recommend trying the exercises posted to the beginning of this thread (post #1) ~ the main thing that I encourage people to do here are series of 2-5-10 or 15 minute gesture drawings from Master Drawings. There are several Master Drawings posted along with the exercises at the beginning of this thread, however, additional reference resources can be found linked here:

Starrydance,

Good to see you here. :)

I would encourage you to work from Master Drawings and not from fantasy or manga characters. The reason is because fantasy / comic / manga characters are already vastly simplified, and you can't really delve into anatomy by studying them. As I mentioned to normanfreak, try the exercises using Master Drawings as your resource. It's also helpful if you post whatever reference you are using / have used along with your exercises.

Cheers, :)

Hi there, frankly you are more advanced than a beginner, and the 2-5-10 minute rule is certainly not absolute ~ you are of course more than free to do a longer study, in fact, ultimately the goal of doing these shorter, timed studies is to get people to the point where they are ready to do longer, more extended studies. However, when artists are first starting out, the tendency is to render so tightly that they lose sight of the bigger, gestural picture. I would say that you've got a good grasp of the gesture and I would be happy to see you do a longer, more extended study in the medium / media of your choice. :)

Hi everyone. There's some awesome & inspiring stuff in here. This is my first post on CGtalk. Im generally way too nervous to join message boards like these but since everyone here seems so helpful I think it will be worth it. :) I'm not exactly a beginner artist, been drawing for nearly 10 years. But I haven't really been taking it seriously until a few years ago and I've just now started to get serious about studying anatomy and life because I'd like to go to school for it and also just to improve my personal art. Right now my art still has a pretty strong toony influence because for so long that's how i drew.

So here's some of my studies I did yesterday (and this morning). These are resized versions and you can click them to see the full size.

A master copy with the ref attatched. Drawn in Art Rage.
http://gallery.darkdarkroom.com/d/3714-2/mastercopy2-5-15_01.jpg (http://gallery.darkdarkroom.com/d/3676-1/mastercopy2-5-15_01.jpg)

Here's a painting from photo ref. My goal was an hour and a half but it ended up being around 2 hours. Also done in Art Rage. Ref'd photo here: (Link (http://multicolours.com/mb/pictures/vintagephotos/u-of-mass-spring.jpg)). Lots of problems but I didn't want to get too perfectionist about it (like i do).
http://gallery.darkdarkroom.com/d/3716-2/springarcher_2hours.jpg (http://gallery.darkdarkroom.com/d/3670-1/springarcher_2hours.jpg)

And here's some sketchy, gesturey things from a ref on the gestures thread -i think-. Pencil. Probably 1-2 mins each. Probably too long :c
http://gallery.darkdarkroom.com/d/3717-2/simon_gestures02.jpg (http://gallery.darkdarkroom.com/d/3709-1/simon_gestures02.jpg)

I am not very confident with my lines and im horrible at porportions but i'm working on it. Hoping to get in some serious "mileage" here. :3 Maybe i ought to start my own anatomy thread..

Starrydance,

Good to hear! That's definitely the purpose of reviews such as these. :)

Chantyloc,

Welcome aboard! It's best to keep images to 800 pixels wide or less, but it's not a big deal. :)

It's good to see your exercises ~ I have reviewed one of your drawings to show some basic steps which I think is a good way (though not the only) way to approach a gesture drawing. The technique demonstrated below is called the 'Lay~In':

http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b380/rebeccak5/Beginners%20Lounge/Chantyloc_Review-01.gif

Hope this helps! :)

darkdarkroom,

Welcome aboard! It's great to see you've posted here, and I would agree that you are not a beginner, though you are certainly welcome to post here ~ you're also free to start your own Anatomy Thread if you like (as is anyone). :)

It would be great to see you develop this piece further:

http://gallery.darkdarkroom.com/d/3716-2/springarcher_2hours.jpg (http://gallery.darkdarkroom.com/d/3670-1/springarcher_2hours.jpg)

The woman in the reference is taller ~ but I think you can really make this piece work by really going after the value structure.

Check out this Tutorial if you get the chance: :)

Thanks, Rebeccak :) I guess I just feel like a beginner since this is all new to me.

And yeah, I knew something was off about the picture. Porportion's probably the hardest thing for me right now. Besides faces. I need to work on that.

Thanks for the links to the tutorials I will definately check them out.

Is this any better Rebeccak? Also, do you have any tips for using a tablet? I have an Intuos 3 (4x5) and it is very different from drawing on paper. I find it often difficult to get the curves I want without making a million short strokes. Thanks again, this is a great thread.

darkdarkroom,

No problem! I know the forum is big and can be intimidating, so you are welcome to post wherever you feel the most comfortable. :)

shrey,

Welcome back! Good to see your Anatomy Thread up. :)

Lempface,

I do think this is better! Getting used to a tablet just takes time and a bit of practice. One exercise I've heard that people do to get used to the feeling is to just do several practice sessions drawing various lines, circles, cubes / boxes, etc. to just sort of generically practice linework. It can help you loosen up and get used to the decidedly different feeling of the tablet. :)

Your Hogarth studies are coming along really well, it's always good to see these. I hope you don't mind, I did a paintover which I think shows how you might try to tidy the perspective of the forms:

Thanks alot! much appreciated. I need all the help I can with my gestures. Unfortunately being mostly self-taught, I picked up alot of bad habbits and poor technique. Only now am I learning how to draw proper gestures ;)

Radical_Seifer,

You're welcome! Glad that you found your SPOTLIGHT thread...I'm always happy to showcase good work. :)

Maladie,

I like the sense of the pose you've captured here ~ I've done a paintover which hopefully demonstrates that it's always best to draw the figure as though unclothed, in a simplifed, gestural fashion, prior to adding clothes overtop:

Hi, this is my first time posting a sketch. These are heads from page 10 of Dynamic Figure Drawing by Burne Hogarth. I did these without doing any erasing since I didn't have one nearby, not sure if that was a good practice or anything but thought I should mention it. The scan kind of brightened the image and you can't see all my construction lines so this actually looks a bit cleaner than the original. The numbers in the sketch are just the order I drew the heads.

I don't think my shading is very good, I think I tried to copy too much rather than do my own shading. Also, I think I am drawing too hard and using my wrist too much cause my wrist was sore after I finished.

I wasn't sure if it was ok to post the reference since it's from a book but you can find the image here (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/0823015777/104-8843317-4470350?v=glance&n=283155) if you go to the search inside book link.

Here is my sketch:
http://img130.imageshack.us/img130/1883/sketch019qr.th.jpg (http://img130.imageshack.us/my.php?image=sketch019qr.jpg)

Any comments are appreciated. I haven't drawn much in years so I can use any advice you may have. :)

Thanks for looking.

Hi gnoway,

Welcome aboard! :) I have done studies just like these from Hogarth's books, and I think they are a great way to really get a solid understanding of the human head in an efficient manner. I think it's great that you've done these without erasing, it really forces you to concentrate and to hone your observational skills as well.

I look forward to seeing more of your work here! :)

You are welcome to post any type of work you wish here ~ it might be nice to see a few of your pieces which you have done previously or are working on currently so that I can get a sense of where you are coming from. Studies or finished pieces are both welcome.

I really encourage beginners to try the Exercises linked in the first post of the thread you are currently in:

thanks heaps for the welcome. i havnet got all my work on the pc yet...chasing my nearly 1yr old daughter and being 8 months pregnant with no.2 sort of limits my time. but here are a few pieces. one is my very first digital painting which i was so proud of initially, but now i just feel like i cheated myself. (i sketched over the top of a stock image then painted it looking at the pic, but not painting over it...does that make sense?) the other is just a sketch i have on the pc. not my best stiff, but it will have to do for the moment.

shrey - thanks for the kind words, look forward to seeing your studies.

Managed a few more sketches, thought things were getting easier but it looks like I overestimated my progress. It feels as though i've hit a wall, I'm struggling to put into practice some of the concepts hogarth and bridgman explain in there books.

I can't draw well without reference plain and simple, the drawings tend to look really bad. Thats enough whinning from me today.

hogarth - Dynamic hands...pretty bad sketches

20min portrait - photo ref used, will keep redoing this until i get the likeness right.

Timed Bridgman studies

http://img382.imageshack.us/img382/6066/bridgmanstudy15qa.jpg

hogarth study, thought about something Dr Bone mention in Fl3wk's anatomy thread about not concentraiting on rendering too much and trying to learn what you are trying to draw. That's how I approached this study.

Hey there,

I am back...:scream:

Just so you know I have not been lazy while gnawing on my challenge piece (which I cancelled - it was unfinishable for me at my stage, so back to learning...yay!)

these are all either pencil or charcoal.

Some are just doodles I happened to like. Reasons given directly above the sketch...

anatomy partly wrong, but I liked it because something good happened to my edges here...
http://img125.imageshack.us/img125/9370/sketches123wo.jpg

Moreover, I recently discovered a nice opportunity for real live reference gestural sketches: teh playground. Whenever the weather is half decent we (family and neighbours/friends) spend hours each day on the playground and I decided I might just as well sketch a little there.

After I finally endured the awkward arty-farty feeling of bringing my sketchbook to the playground I must say it was really fun. The following sketches are sorted chronologically decending (latest first) to demonstrate what I concluded: I was getting better doing these quick live sketches... (while the good weather lasted, hope the summer will be back soon)

As to a little "trick" I tried when doing these sketches:
Apart from teh sitting folks, everyone moved rather quickly, especially the kids. In order to catch the pose I took a mental photo of them...:D I don't know if you do that, too, but if you watch people and then quickly close your eyes you sort of get a snapshot of the last thing you saw.
I sketched that and then referred for clothing or hair details to the live person againg as the actual pose is not important for that.

quite forgot...

Hogarth stuff:

eyelids - the upper one protrudes more than the lower one...

http://img100.imageshack.us/img100/7370/sketches79ro.jpg

eyelids again - also, the lowest point of the lower lid is not directly below the highest point of the upper lid. This should be kept in mind to avoid perfectly symmetrical (and therefore wrong) lid layout.

(the scribbling in the lower right corner is where I was pondering Painter IX's 2Bpencil while sketching with a real live one and the various line qualities you get from a normal pencil and how to translate this into digital, along with paper texture and all. To cut it short: don't look there...:D )

oh kay....lets get this started..shall we... hello there @--}--everyone..
Im not sure where to begin...... and sadly..im to tired to be able to fully explain myself...

I've been drawing ever since I was little, from elementary school and to high school. When I was in high school, i was influenced by anime. But even before then I was fascinated with animation. I loved anime mostly because of how far they took telling a story in so many forms.
So with that fascination. I began to draw, draw more and more.. just to putting the ideas i had in my head onto the picture...i still even have some old art to show.. what i used to do....(and yes i suffered from the drawing the big head small body syndrome) lol :3
-------------
I've always wanted to become an artist..and illustrator... My father drew..and my mother drew as well.. but chose different paths (nursing field)... Hence you can imagine.. what happened to me...
to make a long story short.. I didnt follow my true nature.....even though I wanted to pursue it..I didnt... chose computer science instead... (Im over that now)
But I didnt want to deny being the artist in me.. Cause to see ebautiful art work..and wanting to be part of the world..
They're were alot of lessons I had to learn.....
Even during the time i was in high school till college... i didnt draw as much as i wanted to.. which effected me very emotionally... I was very focused on drawing the perfect picture of what ever idea of my head.. hence.. no art was ever made. My friends from ecau (East Coast Artist Unite)... would literally force me to sit down...and draw something from life...and in my own head... i didnt want to.. didnt see the point of it...

I dont remeber when...and how... but... one day I had an epiphany... if i dont do this.. its going to be the biggest regret in my life. I wanted to draw ..create..express myself...on a peice of paper... but how can if i dont know the way... The reason why.. i cant create is because i lack knowledge in certain things...I was never taught the correct way of doing something to be able to do something right...
so..here i am on my quest....
So i have been studying anatomy from loomis.. and read and did some exercises from drawing on the right side of the brain (highly recommened..)
I know.. i need a plan..of where to start.. so i just drew these pictures..with out using any references.. just using what ive learned...from past years till now...
The hardest part for me... is when I want to create a picture(project) like a girl dancing in the rain.... i dont do it..because i know if i go through it im gonna not like the end result...cause of my lack of knowledge...

So..for anyone who takes they're time reading this..thank you @--}-----

Mu,

Good to see your studies, both the outdoor and the Hogarth images are looking good. Just keep drawing, I think the Hogarth studies in particular will stand you in good stead. :)

Rebeccak,

Thanks. I will make an anatomy thread soon. Should I stop posting these here and just put my studies there only?

A-I-R,

Thank you, yours are looking good as well! I like the skulls, I need to work on that myself. Good to understand the underlying structure. Keep it up, can't wait to see some more from you.

A-I-R,

These studies are looking good, please do more of them! :) You are free to create your own Anatomy Thread as well, if you choose. Anyone may do so. :)

gnoway,

You are welcome to post to both places, or only to your Anatomy Thread if you choose. Up to you. :)

Cheers,

I did some playing around in photoshop but it felt weird. So, I downloaded the free version of artrage 2 and sketched some heads. No reference used so things aren't quite right but I wanted to see what I remembered. I tried playing with a bit of perspective but I don't think I was very successful.

(edit: these are done with my tiny 4x5 grapphire, I need to upgrade!)

enialadam,

Nice job on those. I need to try some of those gesture drawings I think. :)

hellsgfx,

I think your painting came out well. Especially for a first! The edge looks a little blurry, maybe you could harden that a bit? I haven't tried painting yet so I don't really have much else to say but it looks good to me. :)

i dont know if this is the right place for it, but i've been working on tutorials and i'm doing a series of studies with skintone, technique and anatomy using Painter. i used this tutorial and had a lot of fun with it. i'm trying to create my own style..because my old way was not something i felt proud of (sketching over a pic and then painter vector style then using "just add water" to blend.) anyways...if this is the wrong spot to post someone let me know.

also, i havent started any of the exersizes yet as i just got my new tablet and i suck at sketching with it..so i have to sit down with a pencil sometime.

MrsB, nice eye. I think it should be fine for you to post it here but I'm sure Rebecca will let you know for sure as soon as she drops by. So what kind of tablet did you get? I want to upgrade mine as it's really too small to sketch with I think. 4x5 is ok for texture work I think, which is why I originally got it. Now I just wish I would of got a bigger one that's easier to sketch on. Anyways, I look forward to see what you can do with yours! :)

MrsB

gnoway - lol..i got a little 4x5 Manhattan Tablet. never heard of the brand in my life, hubby bought it for me and i think it might have just been the cheapest. its alright though, he reckons its just a repackaged Wacom....not sure where he gets that from. i think the size is fine for me at the moment, but when i get better with my digital stuff and i have the funds i want to go for an inuendos..the spiffy one with the screen you draw directly onto..and big sized thankyou muchly. lol. thanks for the comment on my eye. :)

gnoway
06-10-2006, 02:18 PM
hmm yea, i've never heard of that one. I think the one you draw on the screen is a Cintiq. Those are nice I bet but I can't justify the price, maybe if I was a pro in the industry. I'd settle for an intuos 6x8 for now myself but my 4x5 grapphire will just have to do until I can afford to upgrade one day.

MrsB
06-10-2006, 09:55 PM
ah my bad. i get confused reading the wacom website sometimes..lol..and intuos not inuendous..lol. i really gotta check these things before i type.

i dont think the small ones are too bad. i mean, occasionally i find myself accidently drawing of the edge, but thats only happened like twice until i got used to actually using a tablet.

gnoway
06-11-2006, 01:12 AM
MrsB:

No they're not bad or anything. I'm sure a small intuos would feel nicer than the graphire I have as well, mine feels almost toy-like. It's just I have a 19 inch monitor and it makes it difficult to translate the size, at least for me.

I hope to have some more torso studies posted soon. I just haven't had much free time to sketch. :(

hellsgfx,

That's a great job with the apple painting, and I hope to see you back here! :)

gnoway,

Nice job with these digital heads! I can't recall if I've asked you your age, but I would encourage you to work traditionally (old fashioned pencil / paper) if you are planning to apply to art colleges. If you are in college or already out, then not to worry, but colleges have a bias against digital work in admission portfolios, so that's a thing for all pre college people to consider. Just passing that along in case I haven't already. :)

MrsB,

Looks like you've got a great start with the eye, and I'd like to see you attempt a whole face! :)

Hi,

My images are quite long vertically, so I am just linking through these thumbnails:
http://www.karyblack.com/wip/wp-content/uploads/2006/06/papersketchs.thumbnail.jpg (http://www.karyblack.com/wip/wp-content/uploads/2006/06/papersketchs.jpg) http://www.karyblack.com/wip/wp-content/uploads/2006/06/papersketchs2.thumbnail.jpg (http://www.karyblack.com/wip/wp-content/uploads/2006/06/papersketchs2.jpg)

I have taken some drawing courses in the past, but the teaching style didn't really click for me. It was a Bauhaus influenced school (which I kind of associate with craftsmanship), but the drawing courses seemed to take unnatural leaps to me -- going from gesture straight to contour, and into colour, etc.
I am finding myself enormously more comfortable with the material from Vilppu, and Loomis. The heavy emphasis on the 3D forms, and disecting the object for the simple shapes in them appeals to me very much (perhaps as 3D is my main area of interest, and it seems pretty natural in my mind). Right now I find that I have some very poor fundementals -- applying perspective to the figure, and being able to break from drawing what I think something looks like (like a nose is a line instead of a really being made up of a rather elaborate collection of planes) rather then what is actually there. I should point out that at the end of drawing courses I started to make progress (even the slowest people can make progress when confronted by 40 hours with live models! ;)). Unfortunately after the classes there was a long lay over when my priorities (at the time film) kept me from practicing enough, and by the time I had the oppurtunity again I had lost a fair amount of my gains.

Then again maybe book learning just appeals to me... or I'm starting to understand that it's work ethic that matters, not empheral 'talent'. I am extremely appreciative of critque, it saves you hundreds of hours in self analysis.

---

Right now I am doing a lot of gesture drawings, and then taking 2-3 mins to bring some three dimensionality to the figure. I'm just starting to feel like I can sketch out a figure with enough information that I'll be able to read it again later.

I'm not really looking to do extremely polished paintings etc, but I would dearly love to be able to do sketchs of scenes that incorporate characters, and to be able to draw well enough to concept and communicate people/costume/creatures for my own projects. Lordy... polished or not thats a tall order, give or take 3 years I might get there I guess :)

gnoway

Rebeccak,

I'm 25, I don't think you've asked before. Sadly I don't have the time or resources to pursue college courses. Well maybe something part-time at the local community college but right now I'm just a hobbyist. I actually split my limited time between my almost one year old son, art, programming and mathematics(for games programming). The unfortunate side effect of this is that I'm not a pro in any of these but I have fun with each of them.

I could stop the digital stuff if that is still the recommendation. I don't really like the size of my tablet anyhow, I just doodle on it now and then. Nothing too serious. :) I'm interested in improving my overall artistic ability so whatever you recommend I will listen to. I am interested in digital but until I get a "real" tablet aka intuos :) I probably won't mess with it much.

JonM,

Nice life drawing there. Keep em coming!

kary,

Those studies look very good.

Here's another Hogarth torso study from me. I was gonna do some shading but since I haven't posted anything in a while and I don't know when I'll get more free time, I decided to go ahead and scan it in.

Hello, I'm new to this forum, and quite happy that I stumbled upon it, since it is a very vast and useful resourse for an artist. :)

I'm 17 years old, and I've been drawing for as long as I've been able to hold a pencil or crayon, so in terms of mileage I don't think of myself as a beginner, but most certainly a bumbling newbie when it comes to the technical side of drawing.
I've have attended to one drawing class and one painting class, as well as a painting weekend workshop when I was younger, but none of these taught me much, when I was a child it didn't catch my interest (I was more interested in drawing my 'way'), and the more recent ones attempted to teach me to paint before I had learned to draw.

I have seen a lot of progress in my work the last few years, but I realize that I have only a very basic idea of anatomy and most of the time I don't even use reference and I draw in a very stylized way without fully knowing the principles behind it.

So hopefully the constructive criticism I can get in this thread can help me get better and closer to where I would like myself to be in drawing.

I'll post a few of my drawings in this thread later, as well as some excercises, but I have been having technical difficulties with my scanner. :D Until then, you can check out my deviantart account: http://purka.deviantart.com for my latest work. (all of which has been done digitally, I'm afraid. Since I work with a touchpad (!!) on a laptop, it's not as good as what I accomplish with pencil. But I enjoy working in a digital medium more. :) I expect this to change in the future.)

That being said, this is a very cool thread! So many good works being made in here. :D

Hi Rebeccak

My name is Jeffery Lu and I am 15 years old. I have been drawing since I was very, very young. I used to learn to draw for 3 years before and I started to learn human anatomy about the beginning of last year on my own.

I study anatomy & art by using old masters' works, and notes.

these are the work I done before.

kary,

Great to see your work! :) I did a bit of a paintover for one of your drawings, hope this helps:

http://i23.photobucket.com/albums/b380/rebeccak5/Beginners%20Lounge/kary_Rev-01.gif

The main thing to try to do when drawing is to ANALYZE, not COPY. This is something Vilppu stresses and it's the best way, imo, to go about drawing the figure. There are a variety of great resources in terms of books and DVDs ~ there are Vilppu's publications, Bridgeman's books, the Hogarth and Loomis books, etc. All of these guys teach form and structure, and I think if you start to do Master Copies of these artists and of others, you will start to see a great change in your work, as well as in the way that you see things.

I always encourage people to do Master Copies ~ see this useful thread with links to Master Copy Resources:

Master Copy Resources (http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?t=354836)
http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?t=354836

Looking forward to seeing more of your drawings! :)

gnoway,

As you are not a high school student, I have no qualms about encouraging you to do digital work. That being said, I think the best way to master the human form is traditionally (at least at first). I think your studies are going quite well and I would encourage you to keep doing these in pencil. :)

purka,

Hi there, welcome aboard! :) I took a look at your deviantart account and the main thing that I would recommend is to work if at all possible from life ~ do you have access to life drawing courses? ~ and also to avoid copying the manga style when learning the human figure. I would definitely encourage you as well as others here to try the Exercises posted to the beginning of this thread, and to post your results here. Looking forward to seeing your work! :)

neacser,

Welcome aboard as well! What amazing talent for a 15 year old ~ it's fantastic to see! :) These are all very solid studies ~ from what references (life, master works, etc.) are you working? I would very much enjoy seeing more of your work, and would encourage you as well as others to create your own Anatomy Thread, here:

Fl3wk, very impressive studies!

neacser, such talent for a 15 year old! :applause: I especially like the portrait of the old man.

Rebecca, I'm pretty sure there are no life drawing courses being offered in this area (especially at the moment, since they're usually in the winter), but I'd have to check. I'll make sure to bring my sketch book to the places where I go where there are a lot of people, but most of them don't stay put long enough for me to draw. ;) Which I guess means I'll have to become faster at drawing.

I realized a while ago that I was getting more and more 'cramped' when drawing with my current style, and also getting frustrated when I could feel that my far too little knowlegde of anatomy was making it very difficult to draw what I wanted. So there's no need to worry about me copying the manga style any more, even if I'm in love with the stylized way of drawing, I'll try to learn the rules before I attempt to break them. :D

I'll try to make some gesture drawings from the reference that the sketchathon supplies. They're all such interesting poses! :)

I've also been trying to draw with out any refs aswell, mainly trying to capture the pose rather than focus on detail. I had mixed result with the sketches, some of the poses are not quite what I wanted to do. I was forced to adjust and adapt some, I just had a mental block and could not see the poses clearly in my mind.

2dartist, I like the sketches where you used no reference, they seem very animated and the strokes you use are full of character :D I don't know that much about proportions myself, but maybe the legs are a bit on the short side. But otherwise they're very lovely!

I finally got to scan my sketches! :)
I tried the first excercise, although the 15 minute sketch ended up being only 10 minutes.

2 min. sketch.

http://i39.photobucket.com/albums/e171/pura-pura/pose1_2min.jpg

5 min. sketch.

http://i39.photobucket.com/albums/e171/pura-pura/pose1_5min.jpg

10 min. sketch.

http://i39.photobucket.com/albums/e171/pura-pura/pose1_10min.jpg

I like the first two best, probably because I started getting back into my bad habits as soon as I got more time to sketch. With 15 minutes I thought 'Then I'll take it slower', but that didn't really work. :/ I just started scribbling with no purpose, and I really don't like the outcome. But I guess it did teach me something.
After I scanned it, it accidentally ended up being upside down as well as flipped horizontally, so I could really see all of the mistakes I made! :D Especially that I forgot the most important line of all of them, the center line! I think I'll have to read your anatomy review on gesture again, because I seem to forget it as soon as I leave the computer!

I also tried to begin to draw a bit from life, as you suggested. Because of the before mentioned flipping, I realized that the fingers are too small, and that I should rather not try and shade it ;) 'specially if I'm trying to shade it to cover up mistakes.

http://i39.photobucket.com/albums/e171/pura-pura/hand_study1.jpg

All of these were drawn with a very fat, very blunt pencil and no access to an eraser to try and stop myself from drawing too many details and erasing things all the time. :) I'll try and dig out some charcoal that I know I have got somewhere.

And now I'm sitting here wondering whether or not I should try my hand at the

But are they a bit too complicated for a beginner like me? Should I rather try a portrait?

Hmm. *stares longingly at the paintings* They're very pretty. I'll try sketching them at least. :)

hellsgfx,

Good to see you doing these exercises! :) I've forgotten whether or not you've mentioned if you are in high school or out of high school. One thing I must recommend for those in high school is that they work in Traditional media only ~ schools do not typically look at digital artwork favorably. Having said that, if you are in college / out of college, then I have no concern with your doing digital work. :)

Just saw your last sketch. Very nice! Looking forward to seeing more sketches. :)

Cheers,

hellsgfx,

A thread which is really good so far and in which I would encourage you to try the exercises is:

Digital Painting: Tips and Techniques for Beginners With David René & Matt Ellis. (http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?t=369421)

http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?t=369421

It has great exercises for just getting used to the Wacom tablet and pen. This might be useful to do before going after something really complex like the figure. I would invite all beginners to try the exercises there as well. :)

Something else that might be useful is filling the bkgrd with a light gray. This gives you a nice bkgrd and you're not working against stark white. Just remember to create your painting on a layer above your bkgrd layer. Also, you might try using one of the dry media brushes (like a charcoal brush) (http://forums.cgsociety.org/showpost.php?p=3611481&postcount=5) which comes with Photoshop.

Cheers, :)

Carnew,

Welcome aboard! :) Really strong work here, it's great to see your stuff! I always love to see Master Copies in particular, and your other pieces are really strong ~ the Master Copy is beautiful!

It looks like you have had some good art training. Do you have a good art teacher at school who is giving you advice for the preparation of your portfolio?

Please bear with, as for any new user on CGTalk, the first 2 posts must be manually validated, so it may take just a bit for your second post to appear. :)

I would encourage you to create your own Personal Anatomy Thread (which is essentially a sketchbook) here: :)

Hi everyone!

I've been working as an illustrator/graphic designer for the last three years but I rarely have a chance anymore to work on any anatomycal drawings since my job only requires me to create graphics and characters that are more stylized and cartoony. Hopefully this thread would be a good start to help me get back on my feet and follow my true passion which is figure drawing. Can anyone please advice if I should post here or are is there any other thread that I should start with. I don't really consider that I'm at a beginner level since I took 4 years of figure drawings at art school, but I haven't done it in 3 years, so might as well start from scratch LOL :) I was also looking at the thread "Anatomy Lesson Series: Body Part 1 - The Head." Any advice would be greatly appreciated,

Thanks,

Hello, everyone!
I've had this account for ages (well, more than a year, in any case), but never made a single post up until this point. Oh well, some time has got to be the first, and this seems like a good place to start. :) I have been drawing in my spare time for the past three years (I'm currently seventeen years of age), but I haven't had many classes (only very few in high school). I hope to learn a lot here, though. ^_^ With so many talented artists to learn from, the conditions sure are splendid! Enough about that, though, here are my picture examples:

http://www.cassisconnection.com/cgtalk/jaiede.jpg
(Character design, semi-old picture but I still believe the body more or less matches up to my current level, whereas the face does not)

http://www.cassisconnection.com/cgtalk/dancerred.jpg
(From June. Is unfinished and will probably remain as such.)

http://www.cassisconnection.com/cgtalk/unicorngirl.jpg

(Current WIP)

That's it! :) Thank you in advance for any feedback and critique!

this is gert , finally managed to post , my first post !
I followed the shading tutorial , but it seems closed , the forum , but already did the drawing , so here it is , hope its not to late for your comment
the problem with me is , i want to learn anatomy , but don't know where to begin,
Is it best to learn all the bones , out of the head , so you can draw themn from every angle , already tried that a little bit , but the spine , is vrry vrry difficult , many abstract forms , maybe i'll just have to go throug with it , cause there's probably no easy anatomy highway ,is there??
i hope to hear your thoughts ,

That would be me. I've been spending some time learning my way around this site. Making some progress.

I hope to start the first assignment of the beginning post in this thread soon. rgkcalb,

There is no time frame here - simply do the exercises at your own pace, and post things as you wish. :) This place is an informal area where you can start to improve your basic drawing and painting skills. As you become more confident, you are encouraged to create your own Personal Sketchbook Thread in the Personal Anatomy & Sketchbook Thread (http://forums.cgsociety.org/forumdisplay.php?f=200) Forum.

I finally have Anatomy Lessons From The Great Masters in hand and made a number of attempts as fast sketch. Not particularly proud of the but it's a start

http://paintapixel.info/images/200609/cowgirlhat-snap3_oa.jpg

As a photographer I wind up reinterpreting my photographs. As you might see I'm not completely lost in photoshop although there is room for improvement.

But simulating pencil drawings in photoshop is a totally different ballgame. I'm using a textured round brush with opacity set at 100%. I do set brush opacity to be be controlled via pen pressure though. Shading I find difficult in this manner. I would like to set background to middle grey while toggling between black and white with x key but can't see my brush when it's over a grey canvas. I prefer to draw in photoshop. Any suggestions appreciated.

Hello everyone,

I would like to point the new folks towards this new thread, which I think will give some direction as to what types of exercises to pursue next:

Personal Sketchbook Primer and Tutorial / Workshop Guide (http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?t=403198)
http://forums.cgsociety.org/showthread.php?t=403198

In particular, I would like to recommend the Anatomy Review 003: SHADING TUTORIAL AND HUMAN SKULL EXERCISE which is the first set of links in the above thread. I think for beginning artists especially, both digital and traditional, this is a really good place to start.

You guys are welcome to post your work from the Shading Tutorial here to the Beginners' Lounge for peer critique and review. I look forward to seeing your posts!

Cheers, :)
