View Full Version : dual PCI-E mobo's - can they do this??
Framed 11-26-2005, 08:55 PM With a dual PCI-Express mobo, is it now possible to have dual graphics cards for different purposes? Like a Realizm500/7800GT combo for the occasional gamer? Or do dual PCI-E only provide SLI functionality?

As far as I know, the cards must be identical and works a SLI, PCI-E is just faster. But I'm not 100% certain.

In theory 2 different cards would work, you'd need 2 screens though, or a screen with 2 inputs.

imashination is correct...just like you can have multiple ethernet cards or whatnot in your computer you can use multiple graphics cards...you would have to hook each card to a different monitor...and the only times you'd run into issues is when you tried to get the monitors to work simultaneously doing different things...ie playing x game over on this one, while doing video encoding over on that one...the drivers would most likely have tons of conflicts...not to mention that's one helluva load on the standard pc

Cool. So one could use Maya with the above setup as in a dual screen windows mode.. And choose which monitor/gfx card & opengl driver to use simply by dragging Maya into the left or right monitor? In a dual setup, whenever a game starts in fullscreen the secondary monitor goes inactive, right? Can't you make a dual card system work like this? The pro card goes inactive while one plays the game full throttle on the geforce.. Get the best of two worlds (famous windows user last words :D)

that sounds like a no...thats the problem...the software (and drivers)...so until they come out with a good set of drivers or software to do the swap for you then i certainly don't see it as being that easy
