My first attempt at some photorealism. Had a few days (2) to cook up this image for a client, going to be on posters, some magazine ads etc....

Has to be on a flat colour (this particular one) and there'll be quite a lot of copy on final version.

I'm quite happy with how this turned out given the time constraints. Modelling in Max5, textures drawn in photoshop (no photographs), rendered with spherical enviro map.

Can (and probably will) tweak it once the pressure's off for future ads.

Comments, crits always welcome :D

I think it's fantastic overall. The only thing that seems off is your ground plane and the shadows; somehow it makes your objects look composited. Other then that I think it's top notch.

Ta for the reply...

I think the shadows definitely need some work, but I'm planning to model an environment for this at a later stage and generate a far more interesting render.

For now I have to call this finished....I'm on to business card and stationery layouts....yikes :(

Thanks for the comments guys

Bit hard for me (still finding my way with 3D) to get past the technical details and actually try create something that carries some sort of mood, or impact.

My lighting needs work I think...but I'll keep at it :D

Hey! Wonderfull work here, man!

I really like the glass one. The glass mat is simply fantastic!!
Could you share your set-up for it?

I mean material tree or some important settings for nice output like yours:D

I think you have chosen some really smart enviroment, didnīt you?

Nice work, keep up the good work.

Libor, thanks V much for the compliment :D

I don't have the file at home, but I'll try cover a few of the general settings from memory.

I should have mentioned that the scene was rendered with Brazil.

The glass mat is default Brazil glass material, IOR set at around 1.6, reflection map is a standard falloff.

The other cups and mug mats are Brazil basic materials, diffuse map contains the company branding, bit of noise, and again reflection is a falloff map. The environment, used the tried and trusted (heh) kitchen.hdr map, but used it as a spherically mapped enviro, RGB output set to 100 (or thereabouts). This isn't a HDRI render, just used the map for reflections :)

There are about 10 spots and omnis setup around the place, most of them excluding various items....just played until I got the balance I liked.

Only 3 of them are casting shadows, I need to experiment with this to address issues raised by other people...i.e. the shadows look comped.

If you like I can post the full material tree for the glass tomorrow once I access my work machine.

Here's another view, slightly lower camera angle, and a few light output values different to the first one.

Im still seeing that the shadows dont match the scene. Great work on the handle of glass! Any GI used in this scene? On the little cut that had some of it spill over the edge the streaks look like you did a mouse streak, instead f it looking like it was of water substance running down the side of a cup.

try using sub-surface scattering on the foam. i think it might add to the realism...but perhaps not in such a light saturated scene....hmmm....try anyways

the foam on the smallest cup seems less realistic than the the other ones :)
and the shadows, they need to feel real also :)

nice, very nice job

The foam and the mugs look great. Don't change a thing there.

For the milk running down the side of the mug, I would think there would be some foam or milk in the saucer as well.

The shadows are the big problem.

There's no shadow under or around the glass at all. That looks pasted in.

The large mug could have more of a shadow, or at least spread out a bit. Right now it's just a grey line around the base.

The other mugs shadows are strange. there is no variance in value from the inner area where the saucer touches the ground right out to the edge of the saucer. It would most likely be darker right where it touches the ground, then lighten up due to the bounced lighting off of the ground and ceramics, then darken up a bit because there isn't such a high concentration of surfaces, etc.

Mainly, there should be a whole lot more happening under there. It looks very flat.

Thanks guys

LordShaitan: Yeah I used GI, forgot to mention that as well (doh). Value of skylight set pretty low (0.4) but I just liked the "solidity" it gave the render. The milk streak is indeed a mouse streak.....wacom gave up the ghost 2 days ago, grrrrrr.

Array: Thanks for the suggestion, I'll definitely give SSS a try with the next version!

ersinkoc: thanks!

m_luscombe: Thanks for the suggestions/comments! You're right, there would be milk in the saucer, or at least in the little well where the cup rests...need to fix that. The shadows....yep they certainly need work, and everyone's made valid points about them. I suspect I need to adjust values of some of the lights which will have the dual result of making the scene less saturated, and also blowing out the shadows a bit less. Definitely gonna address this for the next version......

PsychadelicMind: LOL :D . Yeah I have extremely high res images at work. I'll try get a wallpaper res hosted somewhere and post the link here.

Facial: Thanks very much!

I'm not going to post any WIP renders here and incur the wrath of mods (lol), but for the next campaign (which is also a magazin spread) due in a few weeks I'll take all your suggestions into account and post the results then....thanks all!
