View Full Version : An up to date recommended UK hardware vendors list?
anevsky 11-26-2005, 01:15 PM Searching through the forums I was able to find bits and pieces here and there, but I would very much like to know of further updates and suggestions.
http://www.ebuyer.com (http://www.ebuyer.com/) - has been recommended a few times
http://www.komplett.co.uk (http://www.komplett.co.uk/) - recommended once
http://www.overclockers.co.uk (http://www.overclockers.co.uk/) - mentioned but not recommended per se
http://www.scan.co.uk (http://www.scan.co.uk/) - got conflicting reviews in the past
http://www.shop4memory.com - Seem to have good variety of products - any personal experience?
http://www.cclonline.com - never mentioned - I came across but have no idea how they are
While some of these offer reasonable prices - The variety of certain components available seems to be somewhat lacking so I would really appreciate being enlightened as to other options. Also it would be great to get an update of the current level of "trust" for the above mentioned vendors \ resellers.
Thanks.

All my parts came from http://www.scan.co.uk/ - they were very reliable and answered any questions, good prices too.

microdirect are excellent too. often cheaper than elsewhere and occasionally deliver early. i've had nothing but bad luck with ebuyer. well.. less bad luck as bad service. they're cheap but you might end up paying for it in the end... ocuk are excellent too but you pay a premium for having top-end gear on offer. scan are fine, no quibbles there. misco are also fine. aria.. not tried them but they look decent, and you get customer reviews on practically everything.
i usually use ocuk to find the gear, microdirect for the cheapest price and scan or ebuyer if i can't get what i need at a good price. all those price running sites are practically useless, as they mostly just list shops that have paid to have their sites advertised. you won't find the best price that way.
ah and you'd be suprised how much you can get on amazon these days as well :)

Scan are good in my experience but their delivery charge (of about £8) can make them expensive if you only buy one or two items from them.
http://www.dabs.com/ - good range but mixed reviews as to service.

http://www.overclockers.co.uk/http://www.tekheads.co.uk
I've only ordered smallish part from the above guys, but they have been good with me, even with returns.
I just ordered my system from scan because of the good finance options they provide.

http://www.ebuyer.com - A complete bunch of useless monkies. In my limited experience with them, they have lied about having stock, sent wrong items, theyre imposible to contact and take weeks to give rma numbers. I'll never touch them again.
http://www.overclockers.co.uk - They're pretty decent. They went through a crap growth period a year ago where they couldn't cope in the slightest with the demand on them, they're fine now.
http://www.scan.co.uk - Never had a problem with them myself.
http://www.dabs.com - theyre fine, had a small refund issue a while back, but theyre just the walmart of online computer hardware.

Thanks for those replies. Contrary to customer reviews around the web - I now consider Overclockers and Scan as solid options, and Ebuyer I will avoid at least for my current planned "shopping spree".
This pretty much covers all I need with reasonable price tags except for one thing - memory. I find there's quite a lack of variety still of the higher end large capacity ddr flavour. The "shop4memory" and http://www.memory-configurator.co.uk/ both have a good selection but iv'e not found feedback on either.
In general i'm a bit surprised theres only been 4 or 5 places where people have (successfully)done business online in the UK.
