i'm lookin to an upgrade of no more than 900$
I use my pc for games, digital painting, maya and zbrush. I would be extremely greatful if someone reccommends me parts that will give the most performance boost from the upgrade.

I was thinking of switchin from p4 to amd and changin the motherboard and graphics card, but i'm clueless as to exactly what type of processor, and motherboard to get. for the graphic card i'm looking into a 6800gs (can't find the 6800gt where i live). Anywayz sorry for posting another one o these threads, i've read a couple o the ones here but i'm still left a bit clueless. Hopefully I can squeeze 2 more years out o this system... thx in advance for the help.

Here are my current specs:

p4 2.4c
abit is7
radeon 9800pro
Geil 2gb DDR400
Coolermaster 450w truepower
1 seagate 120gb 7200rpm 8mb
2 western Digital 7200rpm 8mb

my bro does have a p4 3.0e lyin around but i dunno if it'll hurt the performance too much if i use that, get a new motherboard, and a better graphics card 7800gt maybe, wudduya guys think?

Hi I also use zbrush and maya.So i recomend you to check amd dualcore cpus that they are really fast. For graphics i use ati firegl v7100,its equal to quadro fx 4400 but its 3 times cheaper.Thats my opinion so thnik about it.

thanks bls, will look into the dual cores. as for the graphic card, i'm not really in the market or workstation ones at the moment. gaming cards are what i can afford for their price/performance ratio at the moment.

so sorry for bumping the thread again  I really really really need some more input. goin to get the stuff soon, will really appreciate the replies. hopefully my budget is enough for an sli motherboard that will still support my current ram chips ddr400. don't really have any idea which one to get though. thx in advance!

Not sure why you would want an SLI motherboard as no 3D Apps use SLI or benefit from SLI.. only games benefit from SLI currently. But I have the EVGA SLI Motherboard and it has been rock solid and uses DDR400 ram.. it retails for about 139 at new egg. You may want to watch their specials as well ; when I got mine it was actually free with the purchase of my EVGA 7800GT video card. So far I have tested Blender, Maya, Zbrush, 3D Studio Max and Cinema 3D on my system with great success and performance ( I have the AMDX2 4200+ ) but I was coming from an old 1900+ machine so anything would have been a performance increase..

thanks Sp1ice! I've been hearing around that 3d apps are likely to eventually take advantage of sli technology, so I just wanna be safe. Like i said I don't plan on makin major upgrades for another 1-2 years so I want a mobo that'll hopefully last me that long. as for the evga motherboard, i don't think its available where Im staying, the only ones i can find so far are common brands like asus, abit, gigabyte, msi, dfi, but I need help choosing the right one. thx for ur help
