View Full Version : Reactor cloth in Max 4.2
ksanim 11-25-2005, 08:43 PM I understand that Max 4.2 doesn't have advanced tools for simulating cloth, but it's what I have for the moment. I've applied Reactor cloth to a mesh that represents a cloak. I want to attach this mesh to a character, so when I run my animations for the biped, the cloak will flow with the character's movements.
Where do I go from this point? The tutorials I've gone through are for newer versions of max that have Reactor features not available for my version. If there's a way to get this done in 4.2, please let me know rather than suggesting that I upgrade.

Did you try SimCloth?

I couldn't get it to work, then I read that Reactor cloth is faster and better.

What do you mean you couldn't get it to work? I don't believe 4.2's Reactor was really made for cloth purposes (like v.8's cloth mod), but then again, what do I know..

What you do is go to the bottom of the reactor cloth modifier thing until where it says constraints and click on attach to defmesh then on top of that there will be a rollout that says attach to defmesh, you press the only button and choose your defmesh which will be your character then click on the little cross next to the reactor cloth modifier and click vertex and choose the vertices that will attach to that character. For example if you make a skirt you will attach the vertices on the skirts waste to the characters waste, that way everything in the skirt will move but the skirt will not fall off.
Hope you understood.

jadedchron,
I was referring to simcloth in my previous post. Do you know where I can find a tutorial of how to set it up and utilize it? I visited chaosgroup's website, but couldn't find any links to simcloth. I installed it, but don't see it anywhere under utilities.
Thanks.

simcloth is accessible as a modifier, not via utilities. apply it to all objects that take part in your simulation. you can go into vertex subobject mode, select verts on your cloth, create a vertex group and attach that to another object. in the simulation, these vertices won't be affected.
oh well, hope that helps, it's been quite a while... anyway, simcolth may be slower than more recent reactor but in the max 4 days it was the better option - and much easier to learn.
if you installed it correctly, it should have a help file with a few very basic tutorials. maybe you have to manually add the helppath in one of the ini's though.
